1660:English,French,andScottishwereallrestoredunderCharlesII.

Duringthesespecificelevenyears,variousgovernmentsteppedintoserveas
placeholdersbeforeCharlesIIbecameking.Theseofficialsdisapprovedof
theatreandarrestedalloftheactorsforservingasroguesandbeguntaxing
individualswhowantedtoseetheatre,sothetheatreculturefellill.

Uponhisbirthday,23May,CharlesIIwasgreetedatLondonascitizens
awaitedforthereturnofparliament
CharlesIIissuedtheDeclarationofBreda,alistofplansheplannedon
takingasKing
SamuelPepysandhisdiaryentries

TheDeclarationofBredadidnotspecifytheoutlawoftheatreandhowit
returns,butitdidaddressreligioustolerationandevenresultedinpardoning
someofthemurdersthattookplacewhileEnglandlackedaKing.Theatre
becameprominentagainsimplythroughCharlessinterestinthetheatre.
AroundthistimeiswhenSamuelPepysbeganholdingadiaryofthemundane
taskshedidthroughouthisdayaswell.

1660:
CharlesIIissuedletterspatentallowingtheatrestoputon
performanceslegally
WilliamDavenantandThomasKilligrewwerepioneersofthePatent
Theatre
Womenbeganperformingonstagewithmen(1662)

BothDavenantandKilligrewbeganbuildingtheirtheatrecompaniesfrom
scratch.Thetwoofthemhad,essentially,amonopolyoverallthingsLondon
theatre,sotheybeganputtingonseriousdramasattheirrespective
companies.KilligrewestablishedtheKingsCompanyinDruryLaneand
DavenantstartedtheDukesCompanyinLislesTennisCourts.Thiswasthe
electricshockthatbegantherevivedthetheatreera.

:DavenantandKilligrewcompaniesmerge
CharlesKilligrew,Thomassson,ranthecompanypoorly
ThecompaniesmergeandchangenametoUnitedCompany

Aftersuccessfulrunsfromboththeatrecompanies,Londontheatrebecamecentralized
bythepairingofthetwo.Beforetheymerged,however,in1675
TheCountryWife
waswritten
byWilliamWycherleybytheKingsCompany.Theplaysatirizedtheupperclass,manyofwhom
weresittingintheaudienceopeningnight.Later,in1773
SheStoopstoConquer,a
notherplay
satirizingtheRestorationperiod,openedatasmallertheatreinLondon,theCoventGarden
Theatre.

:GloriousRevolutionendsRestorationera
PublicbecomesmoreandmoreintolerantofJamessreligioustolerance
UnionofEnglishParliamentariansoverthrowJamesIIalongwithWilliamIIIof
OrangeNassau
1689:BillofRightsdenouncedJamesforabusinghispower

Yearsintohisreign,JamesIIstepsinbetweenthereligiousbattlesoftheCatholicsand
Protestants.AsaCatholic,hebecamealientatedbytheProtestants,howeverhewastoopoor
ofaCatholictogainrespectfromthatrespectiveside.Inanattempttoappeasebothsides,he
endeduppleasingneitherwithhisreligioustolerance.AfterJamesIIwasoverthrown,WilliamIII
steppedinasthenewruler,markingtheendoftheRestoration.
