Wireless transmission methods

How does it do it?

What is good
about it?
What are the
drawbacks

Infrared
Uses infrared light
to transfer data
(invisible to the
human eye)

Microwave
Uses short
wavelengths to
transmit data
(invisible to the
human eye)

Satellite
Uses satellites in
space to relay
data between
different points on
earth

Reliable short
range
example = TV
remote
Devices must be
in line of sight
Short range

Good for longer

distances
example =
Bluetooth
Can suffer from
interference.

Good for very long

distances
Can suffer from
interference from
other devices
Very expensive.
Example =
Global
Communication

Transmission modes
There are three common modes of transmission.
Simple transmission this sends data in one direction only. E.g. a radio
broadcast.
Half duplex this allows two way transmission but devices cannot transmit at
the same time.
Full duplex allows two way communications at the same time

Device
Control system on a
production line

Transmission mode
Half duplex

Mouse connected to a
computer

Simple transmission

A smartphone synching
to a computer

Full duplex

Explanation
Allows two way
transmissions although
devices cannot transmit
at the same time.
Sends data in only one
direction. E.g. radio
broadcast
Allows tow way
communications at the
same time.

Think of another system or device that uses simple transmission e.g.

surveillance cameras
A smartphone is a device that uses full duplex transmission it uses this
because complete answer. Rewrite the sentence starter.
A smartphone is a device that uses full duplex transmission in order to
send and receive messages back and forth.
Explain how a printer is half duplex.
A printer is half duplex because it can allow two way transmissions
such as scanning and printing, although the two transmissions cannot
take place during the same time.
This means that when it receives data from a computer it cannot send any data
back at the same time and when it sends data it cannot receive any data
during the same time.
Parallel and Serial Transmission
There are two types.
Parallel, where data is transmitted simultaneously over a wire. This allows a
whole byte of data to be transmitted together. It is short range with a maximum
wire length of 5m.
Serial, bits (the data size bits not chunks) are transmitted over a single wire one
at a time. Bytes have to be disassembled over into individual nits first then
reassembled at the other end. It can be used over large distances though.
Why is parallel transmission faster than serial transmission?
Parallel is faster than serial because it allows a whole byte of data to be
transmitted together whereas serial transmission has to disassemble
the bytes into individual nits first and then reassemble them again.
Why may a user choose to use Serial Transmission over parallel transmission?
A user may use serial transmission because it can be used over much
longer / larger distances.
This is an advantage over parallel transmission as parallel only has a short
range with a maximum wire length of 5m, much shorter than serial
transmissions.

Universal Serial Bus (what do we normally shorted this to?) USB

This is a serial transmission method. It was introduced to make all the
connections on a computer look the same. It has a maximum transmission rate
of 480mbps.
What ways can you think of that Universal serial buses are used today? To store
data, files and information.
Bi directional transmission.
This means transmitting data in both directions. A good example is fibre optic
cable. One fibre bundle carries data to a device or network and another away
from it.
What may the advantage of this type of transmission be?
-

an advantage of directional transmission is that the data can be

transmitted in both directions,
