DRAWING A FACE LESSON

2
Abstract

In this paper the lesson for drawing a face will be presented and discussed. Washington
Union High School uses the 4Cs lesson design. It focuses on critical thinking,
communication, collaboration, and creativity. This lesson is approached with the 4Cs.
The lesson will address the learning objective and goals of the lesson. The lesson will
also present the activities that will be included to support what students will be able to do
by the end of the lesson. The lesson will be reviewed and annotated to support the
rationale behind each of the steps in the lesson.

National Content Standards: VA:Cr1.1.HSI, VA:Cr1.2.HSII,
VA:Cr2.1.HSII, VA:Cn10.1.HSII.
This drawing activity is the second in three drawing projects.
Prior to this activity, students participated in activities that
helped them develop and practice drawing techniques that will
be utilized when drawing a face. This lesson will allow
students to put into action all the previous drawing techniques
learned.

Opportunities to Learn Plans to differentiate instruction: At the beginning of the

lesson, a handout will be distributed to each student. The
Definition: Materials,
handout will be a guide of the facial measurements that were
Learners and
taught and practiced in the prior lesson. Students will also
Environments
bring out the step-by-step handouts of drawing the facial
features. These handouts were distributed during the previous
lessons as well. Steps will also be reviewed during the lesson
with modeling techniques. Students who are still having
trouble during the activity will be grouped together and
retaught the techniques.
Accommodations and modifications: Students needing
accommodations will be given a handout with the face shape
already drawn. Students will then be able to add the facial
features using the step-by-step handouts. Students needing
modifications will be given a handout with all of the face
shapes and features already completed. The student will be
able to color the face as close to the picture as possible.
Environment factors: Students will be working at their
grouped tables. The groupings are set up with mixed ability
and grade level at each. Students can work collaboratively on
areas that are harder for them. This support of one another
will allow the students to help each other and work through
the problem together.

Objectives

Instructional
Procedures

Students will be able to draw a face from observation.

Students will use the techniques learned in previous drawing
lessons to complete the drawing of a persons face.
LAUNCH (Opening):
In our previous lesson we learned about the measurements of
a persons face, and how these measurements will help when
drawing facial features in proportion. These measurements
will also help you to check your drawing for accuracy of the
proportions of a persons face. In this lesson we will be
looking at different pictures of peoples faces and we will be
completing the drawing of the persons face using
observational techniques, visual measuring, and the
measurements of facial proportions.
Now watch as I demonstrate how you will complete this
activity. At this point I will move to the drawing desk in the
front of the class. My picture that I will be drawing is under
the ELMO and my drawing supplies will be setup there as
well. Students will watch the TV as I model how they will be
completing the activity. The notes for the steps will be up on
the board as I complete them.
First I will start by practicing my drawing on the copy paper.
I will show students how they can practice working with the
observational drawing techniques to see which they will apply
when they move to their final draft. After I find out which
drawing technique I will use, I will then move to the final
draft. Students will watch me measure out the picture on my
drawing paper using the modified contour. Then I will lightly
draw my measurement lines as a guide. Then I will begin my
drawing of the facial features. I will be checking my
measurements as I go to make sure the proportions are correct.
I will only be completing this step for the outline of the face
and the eye placement and then draft out when the other
facial features will go. After I complete these steps students
will be given the opportunity to ask questions on the areas
where they are confused. Once the questions are answered
then the students will begin the activity. Before they start I
will restart the steps they will follow:

EXPLORE (Engagement):
Students will begin the activity by practicing the drawing on
copy paper first. Once they feel that their practice is complete
and they feel they have a clear understanding of the
techniques they will use, then they will have me check off the
practice. Students will get their final draft paper and they will
begin the final drawing. Students will use the techniques they
used in the practice on their final paper. The final draft will be
a complete drawing of the picture of the face that they
received at the beginning of the lesson. Students will be
working on this for the remainder of the class period.
SUMMARIZE/SHARE (Closure):
At the end of the class period I will get the attention of the
students. We will review how the students used previous
drawing techniques to complete the proportions of their
drawing. Students will be told that we will be continuing the
lesson on the next class. We will review this lesson again at
the beginning of the next class meeting.

Assessment

Reflections
This section to be
completed only if lesson
plan is implemented.

While students are working on their practice draft I will be

walking around and checking students work. If I notice that
there are students who are still struggling I will bring these
students together and reteach the steps to completing the face
drawing. Once students have completed their practice they
will bring it to me to check off. If the practice is checked and
completed students will receive the final draft paper. I will
continue to walk around and check students work as they
progress through their final draft of the face drawing.
Student Work Sample 1 Approaching Proficiency:
This picture will be shown in the beginning of the lesson to
show how students completed the drawing but is lacking in
some of the correct proportions. Some of the visual
measuring techniques were used, but more attention to detail
needs to be applied.
Student Work Sample 2 Proficient:

DRAWING A FACE LESSON

This picture will be shown in the beginning of the lesson to

show how students completed the drawing using measuring
techniques for correct proportions, but some proportions could
use more attention. Most of the proportions are accurate to
the picture.
Student Work Sample 3 Exceeds Proficiency:
This picture will be shown in the beginning of the lesson to
show how students completed an accurate drawing using
measuring techniques for correct proportions. Student has
gone above the expectation to make sure all measurements
and facial features are correctly observed from the picture.
Lesson Implementation:
Students will be implementing most of the drawing techniques
practiced in order to make sure the proportions of the face
drawing are accurate to the picture being observed.
