Complex Variable

Analytic Function Of Real/Imaginary Part

Theory

An Analytic Function Whose Real/Imaginary Part Is Given:

Method 1:
Let f (z) = u = iv and let u be given. Since, u is given we
can find and .
As f (z) is analytic, by Cauchy-Riemann equations
= and =
Hence, by mere integration f (z) can be obtained.

Note: The method can be used only when we are able to express
as a function of z, (z) .

Method 2:
Let f (z) = u + iv and let u be given. This means

and

are known.

Now,

Integrating (1),

v = ( + ) + c

From this we get v then f (z) = u + iv.

Method 3: Milne Thompsons Method

Since, = + , =

f (z) = u(x, y) + i v(x, y)

+

= u [ , ] + iv [ , ]
The two variables & are independent. Therefore

we can put = and we get,

f (z) = u( z, 0) + iv(z, 0)
Thus f (z) can be obtained in terms of z by putting x = z,
and y = 0

From this we can say that () is real and we can write it

Hence, adding an imaginary constant and we can say that,
