Smart Board Lesson Plan: Recognizing Patterns

Missy Olimpo

1. Grade Level: 3 Subject: Math

2. Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson plan is to have the students recognize patterns
using a variety of different shapes and other objects in the class room. They
will explore these patterns while working with the smart board interactively.
This lesson will allow the students to work individually and in groups to fine
tune their math skills. This lesson will have many different aspects to it in
order to reach a broader set of topics. Not only will it incorporate Smart Board
technology, but it will also require the student to use block and different
manipulatives. This lesson will be beneficial to the students homework to
find patterns in their house and further activities they will be learning next
week.
3. Justification:
The Smart Board will play a vital role in this activity because instead of just
talking about patterns and using a white board to instruct about patterns the
Smart Board allows the students to take part in the lesson. Using different clip
art pictures and shapes will help students realize that patterns come in
different shapes and sizes as well. In this lesson, I will be asking my students
open ended questions about these patterns and have them come up to the
board and drag the right shapes into the right order. One thing that Im
including into this lesson plan is having students recognize patterns using clip
art of house hold objects so they can recognize patters at home for their
homework assignment.
4. Description of the instructional procedure:
1. I will introduce a variety of terms that the students will need to further in the
lesson. These words will include: pattern, shapes, objects.
2. After they understand these terms I will then continue to use the Smart Board
to assess their knowledge of patterns
3. I will have six shapes on the Smart Board where I will have different students
drag these shapes to make a pattern
4. Next, I will have each student receive a hand full of paper shapes and instruct
them to work together to make a pattern out of these shapes
5. Each group will be asked to present what their pattern they made looks like
and talk about it briefly
6. The students will be asked to think pair share with a partner or their table
about patterns they have seen in their home
7. Then I will assign the class homework to draw one example of a pattern they
found in their home that we will discuss in class on Monday. We will then use
the Smart Board again to recreate these patterns and review what a pattern
is at the beginning of the next class.
