2nd Grade Sample Lesson Plan

Concepts: Movement Activity, solo singing, reading rhythms, instrument performance
Objectives: Students will practice body movement and steady beat by waving scarves to music.
Students will engage in solo singing through nursery rhyme songs. Students will also be
introduced to a new song and instrumental arrangement entitled Mother Goose is on the Loose.
State Standard(s): TEKS
Foundations: music literacy. The student describes and analyzes musical sound.
Creative expression: The student performs a varied repertoire of developmentally appropriate
music in informal or formal settings.
Materials: Computer, scarves, rhythm cards, soprano/alto glockenspiel, soprano/alto/bass
xylophone, alto/bass metallophone, bass bars, childrens voices.
Grade/Age Level: 2nd Grade
Procedures
1. Warm Up Activity (4 minutes)
- Echo sing the song Little Tummy Tucker
- Have 3 volunteers give an example of a food instead of White Bread and Butter
as the rest of class keeps a beat [Solo Singing]
2. State Objectives (1 minute)
- Today we are going to:
Play a body movement activity with scarves
Practice our rhythms by playing Scrambled Eggs
Learn nursery rhymes and a new song called: Mother Goose is on the Loose
Finally we will put instruments to this new song
3. Scarf Activity (10 minutes)
- Students will be handed a scarf as they walk into the classroom.
- In their sitting spots, students will move to the beat and imitate my motions to the
song Hakunah Matata from the Lion King.
- Together we will sing the song Wave your Scarf while the students give
examples of various ways to move our scarves. {For example: Wave your scarf.
Up and Down/ Side to Side/ Zigzag/ etc}
4. Jack and Jill, Little Bo-Beep & New Song (5 minutes)

- Have lyrics to Jack and Jill and Little Bo Peep on the board
-Clap the rhythm of words to Jack and Jill
-Sing Little Bo Beep once then ask students to wag their tail on Bring their tails
behind them.
-Little Bo Peep ran into mother goose. Repeat after me: (Sing New Song)
5. Match Lyrics of Nursery Rhymes to Rhythms (5 minutes)
*Write down three different rhythms on the board and phrases on other side:
Ta-Ta-Ta-Rest
He sang for his supper/Little Tommy Tucker
Ta-Di-Ta-Di-Ta-Ta
Watches her sheep/ Little Bo Peep
Ta-Di-Ta-Ta-Rest
Up The Hill/ Jack and Jill
Ta-Di-Ta-Di-Ta-Di-Ta
Mother Goose is on the Loose

Scrambled Eggs Rhythm Reading (5 minutes)


Pick 4 different flashcards that have the rhythms on the board
Have four different students hold up each rhythm card
The rest of the class claps and says rhythm syllables to all four cards without stopping
The four students will then trade places (scramble) and the order of rhythms will be
changed.
If there is another student behaving, call them up to the front.

7. Mother Goose is on the Loose Instrumentation (15-20 minutes)


-Bordun part taught first [patting hands on carpet]
-Snap half notes
-Wood Block Ta-Di-Ta
-Tambourine part [Rest-Ta/Rest-Ta]
-Play all parts on body percussion
-Review instrument rotation and rhyme
-Assign parts
-Performance rotation twice
