BALDWIN STREET MIDDLE SCHOOL

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
The Physical Education Program is designed to develop the mental, emotional, physical,
and social aspects of living necessary for a happy and productive life.
Students are introduced to the fundamentals of team and individual sports, which
include skills, rules, and game strategy, as well as physical fitness. Emphasis in the
program is placed on providing an opportunity for individual growth and success.
Weight lifting will be an introductory course designed to introduce the students to
weight training. Areas include; circuit training, free weights, safety concerns,
stretching, proper warm-up and warm-down. Technique & Safety is our major focus.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS:
*comfortable exercise clothes completely dierent than what your child wears to school
*shorts must be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee.
*athletic shoes
*deodorant is recommended
~PE locks are available for $5- rental fee - -only school locks are allowed in the locker rooms
~rental days for 7th graders are Sept. 3 & 4 at all lunches. 6th grade will be October 14 & 15.

HEALTH:
6th grade Health: This will be 2 weeks of classroom work. The topics will be:
*5 PARTS OF FOOD GROUPS, RELATIONSHIP TO EXERCISE, FATS, SUGARS, SALTS,
UNDERSTAND & READING OF LABELS, ACTUAL SERVING SIZE, WATER*

6th grade Health: Sexual Harassment Unit will be 3 days in the classroom. The
video series we go through is called Hurting or Flirting.

7th grade Health: This will be 3 weeks of classroom work. The topics will be:
PUBERTY & ADOLESCENCE, VALUE SYSTEM, COMMUNICATIONS, GOAL SETTING,
SIMPLE SKIN CARE, OVULATION & MENSTRUATION, MALE & FEMALE
REPRODUCTION, OVULATION & FERTILIZATION, ABSTINENCE, SEXUALLY
TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS, HIV & AIDS, CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONDUCT LAWS*

8th grade Health: This will be 1 week of classroom discussion. The topics will be:
*ABSTINENCE, GOAL SETTING, RELATIONSHIPS, SELF-ESTEEM, PEER PRESSURE,
CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONDUCT LAWS, TOBACCO, ALCOHOL, DRUGS, CLUB DRUGS*

BMS PHYSICAL EDUCATION STAFF


Laurie Kooienga graduated from Calvin College and has a masters from
Western Michigan University. This is her 19th year teaching Physical
Education and Health at Baldwin Street Middle School. She coached Track
at BMS for 4 years and sideline cheerleading JV and Varsity at Unity
Christian for 4 years. Laurie grew up in Arizona, but now lives in
Hudsonville with her husband and 3 sons, Riley 14yrs, Austin 11yrs, & Logan
9yrs old. She enjoys traveling and boating with family and friends.

Jon VanSlyke will be beginning his 7th year with the Physical Education &
Health department. Jon graduated from Grand Valley State University in
April of 2007 and now lives in Hudsonville with his wife Aubrey, 6 year old
son Peyton, 4 year old daughter Paige, and 3 month old daughter Norah.
He is also the boys JV golf coach for Hudsonville High School and the 8th
grade boys basketball coach at BMS.
