    students,schoolnursesintheUniversityCityareawereoutsideCarolinasMedicalCenterUniversity
    loadingboxesofbandages,thermometersandeconomysizebottlesofhandsanitizerintotheircar
    trunks.
    Forthepastseveralyears,theNorthTryonStreethospitalhaspartneredwith40publicschoolsin
    UniversityCityandHuntersvilletoprovidefreebasicmedicalsuppliesincludinggauze,tongue
    depressorsandicepacks.
    Thearrangementisessentialformanypublicschoolspinchedbytightbudgets.
    WhilethepushformoneytoemploymorenursesinCharlotteMecklenburgSchoolsisgainingground,
    suppliesforthosenursesoftenrunshort.RelyingonpartnershipslikethosethroughCMCUniversity
    oftencanhelpmakeupthedifference.
    ADVERTISING
    Usuallytheschoolshaveeverythingtheyneed,withalotofcommunityeffort,saidCathyYoungJones,
    directorofschoolhealththroughtheMecklenburgCountyHealthDepartment,theemployerofschool
    nurses.Weappreciateeverythingthateverybodydoes.
    ThecountyHealthDepartmenthasanannual$25,000budgetfornursingsuppliestocoverthe164
    schoolsinCMS.
    Theschooldistrictprovidessomesuppliesthroughitscoordinatedhealthprogramtherestare
    furnishedbycommunitypartnershipsandfaithbasedgroups.
    CMCUniversitybeganitsrelationshipwithlocalschoolsseveralyearsago,butthisyearmarkedthefirst
    timeitinvitednursestocometothehospitaltostockupbeforetheschoolyearbegan.Thearrangement
    wasmadetoreducethenumberofordersneedingtobefilledthroughouttheyear.
    Inthepast,MaiLee,ahospitalrepresentativewhooverseesrequestsfromCMSnursesinUniversity
    CityandHuntersville,wouldtravelfrequentlytoseveralschools,deliveringboxesofsupplies.

    SometimesIhadtocomeeveryweek,likeduringfluseasonorwhencertainillnessesaregoing
    around,likestomachbugs,saidLee.Theywouldreallyneedmoregloves,andwewouldcome
    through.
    ThehospitalplanstoinvitenursesbackinJanuarytorestock.Iftheyneedanythingbeforethen,their
    requestswillstillbehonored.
    Theyalwaysgetwhatevertheyaskfor,saidLee.
    Helpfromthecommunityhasmadeadifferenceinotherareasaffectingschoolnurses:Amassiveemail
    campaignlaunchedbyN.C.ParentsAdvocatingforSchoolHealthispartlycreditedwithgettingmore
    nursesassignedtoCMSschoolsthisyearandlast.
    Lastyear,MecklenburgCountycommissionersapprovedfundingtohire11additionalnursesforCMS
    schools.Forthe201415schoolyear,commissionersapproved$1.8milliontohire33schoolnurses.
    Thetotalbudgetnowprovidesonenurseforevery895students.Thatsfewerthanfederalguidelines
    callforbutmorethanaverageforanN.C.school:Federalguidelinesrecommendonenurseper750
    studentstheaverageschoolnurseinNorthCarolinatypicallyisresponsiblefor1,177students.
    Thecountyisintheprocessofhiringthe33nurses.Thefundingisstaggered,however,allowingfour
    nursestobeaddedeachmonth.Schoolswithmorestudentsdealingwithchronichealthconcernswillbe
    givenpriority.
    Oncefinishedhiring,CMSwillhaveanurseineveryschool.
    DonnisQuinnBraswell,anursesupervisorforseveralHuntersvilleschools,saidsheispleasedtosee
    thecommunityadvocateforschoolnurseissues,especiallyasmorestudentsrequirecareforchronic
    conditions.
    Allergiesareareallybigissue.Asthmaissecond.Andoneofthenewerchronicillnesseswouldbetype
    1diabetes,saidQuinnBraswell.
