then follows it with another

that the quote is a lie, someone
made it up, and it keeps getting

whos really the stupid one?

man in Florida is accused of
using 911 to save himself from
boredom. Michael Gilman, 28,
was arrested and charged with
misusing the service. Police say
Gilman called 911 at least six
times in one day, including five
times in a five-hour period. A
couple of his calls focused on
Hitler and the Jews, according
to NewsDaytonaBeach.com.
Police said he also asked the
911 dispatcher to throw people
out of homes in order to serve
and protect and tried to report
an emergency at the White
House. Gilman allegedly told
dispatchers his emergency was
being poor and not able to
vote. Dispatchers also said he
hung up on two occasions when
dispatchers tried to transfer him
to a non-emergency line. One
officer said he went to Gilmans
home in order to get him to stop
calling 911. When the officer
asked Gilman what he was
doing, the suspect allegedly
said he was talking to your dispatcher because Im bored.
Gilman was taken into custody
and later released. Sigh.

A hike is a walk in the woods
that turns into a meditation,
then a prayer, and finally a
song. Its rhythmic. Its your
heart, breath and the sound of
your feet. Its simple. Its a
return to basics and a return to
innocence. Its finding yourself
alone in the woods and seeing
the streams, rocks, trees and
wildlife and recognizing all of it
as wondrous and then realizing you recognize the same
thing in yourself.
Thats why I hike.

Evans is not as well known as

its big brothers: Franconia,
Crawford and Pinkham; but its
no less beautiful. And its not
quite as ambitious. By that I
mean the mountains arent sexy.
Theyre not name peaks. You
wont get a patch for hiking
them or get your name on a list.
They are simply mountains and
you go there to hike them simply because you like to hike and
to have your soul filled with
magnificent views. And best
yet, while they are rugged, none
of them top 4,000-feet so the
crowds stay away.
It also helps that Evans Notch is
just a bit out of the way and sits
in the cleavage between New
Hampshire and Maine.

Our first hike in the area was

last weekend and we set out at
noon for Caribou Mountain, a
6.3 mile hike. When we pulled
into the parking lot I was
thrilled to see only a couple of
cars.

We made our way up the

Caribou Trail through sun-dappled woods that were mostly

bug free. There was a whisper

of a breeze and the trail was
gentle and crossed over many
feeder streams before it climbed
along Morrison Brook and we
came to various small waterfalls. Eventually we entered
into the Caribou-Speckled
Mountain Wilderness area and
the trail was a bit thinner, the
forest a bit wilder. We climbed
higher and higher and still saw
no one. There was something
special about the day and the
way the forest closed in about
us. It grew darker, more foreboding and tangled and thick
moss gathered on cool stones
that rarely saw the light of day.
We passed by beautiful Kees
Falls (25 feet high) and when
we finally climbed beyond
Morrison Brook we came to the
intersection of the Mud Brook
Trail.

and enjoyed our lunch and

drank plenty of water. We then
made our way down along the
Mud Brook Trail, which was
much steeper in its upper reaches than the Caribou Trail. Not
far off of the summit we came
to an open ledge that looked out
toward Kezar Lake and we took
another break. The sun broke
through the clouds in places and
turned some of the dark carpet
of forest below us a golden
green. Atticus found a small
but lush tussock between rocks
and made a bed of it. I followed
his lead and used my backpack
as a pillow. Together, with
clouds as our blanket, we
napped above the rich valley
below. Im not sure how long
we slept for but we woke up
rejuvenated. But we didnt

do two complete molts a year,
in the spring and the fall. Others
do a full molt in the fall and a
partial molt in the spring. For
songbirds, the full body molt
can take as long as six weeks,
said Wilson, versus three to
four weeks for a partial molt.
Eagles and pelicans can take up
to two years to go through a
complete molt cycle. Many
ducks do it in a couple of
weeks, and are briefly grounded
during the process.

Molting Season

Birds molt for a basic reason:

feathers wear out. All that flying, preening, dust bathing,
weaving through limbs of bushes and trees. For a bird, ratty
feathers can be a death sentence. Feathers, which are made
of keratin, like your hair and
nails, have to be replaced.
There is another reason to molt:
it allows birds, mainly male
birds, to don more colorful
plumage for mating season.
Why males?

According to Herb Wilson, an

ornithologist and professor of
biology at Colby College, one
reason is the relatively high
energy cost of producing an
egg, as compared to producing
sperm. The female is making a
much bigger contribution to
every nestling, so she gets to
choose, he said. And the
females are choosing males that
are gaudy because you can only
be gaudy if you can find enough
nutrition to afford to make
those fancy clothes.
Bird species vary in how, and
how often, they molt. Some,
like chickadees, do one complete molt cycle a year. A few

by Jeff Woodburn

All too often, I'm called upon to

find or at least advocate for
state spending for important
programs and services for the
North Country. Just last week,
I scrambled to find $93,000 to
not only keep but expand the
North Country's only substance
abuse treatment center. Since
the state is second to last in the
country in access to treatment
and because our region leads
the state in percentage of overdose deaths, I could not look
into the eyes of my former students who are seeing far too
many of their friends lost to
addiction unless I gave it my
all. I do this against the back
drop of short-sighted fiscal
restraint (we have an $80 million surplus) that denies even
the smartest, data-driven
investments.
Today, New
Hampshire state government
spends less per capita than any
state in the country and less
money in real dollars than we
did in 2010. These policies
especially hurt the North
Country because of our disproportionate reliance on government spending.
I know some are upset that I
supported a comprehensive
plan to put our self-funded State
Park System on sound financial
footing by providing a two-third
discount, not free ski passes to
senior citizens. It is never easy
to take a benefit away -- especially one that is rooted in 40years of history. As politically
popular as it may be, the fact
remains that the state cant
afford and taxpayers should not

subsidize universal free ski

passes to seniors many of
whom are wealthy. It is important to remember that Cannon
Mountain Ski Area is in the red
and a recent audit criticized the
controls over the issuance of
free and discount passes. And
that other state parks rely on
their revenue for operational
costs. We have a strong leadership team at Cannon and they
have long worried about the
prospects of providing free
services to our fastest growing
population demographic. In the
North Country, the 70-80 yearold age population will double
in the next 15 years. Cannon
Mountain is not a club, it is an
economic driver and major
employer. The best way to
avoid privatization and allow
Franconia Notch State Park to
reach its greatest potential is to
allow the managers, not politicians run the operation.

But it is more than economics

and that's why I'm perfectly
willing to stand alone on this
one among my fellow North
Country legislators. Poor seniors need food, shelter and
health care but skiing is a luxury (and an expensive one at
that). And there are several
non-profit ski hills that provide
free (donation of your choice)
to people of all ages. Universal
free ski passes to people 65
years or older regardless of
income or long-term residency
is wrong and offensive to poor
school children (like the ones I
taught) who pay to ski at
Cannon and visit the Flume,
and all the programs that I
believe are a higher priority

To the Editor:

Shame on Senator Jeff Woodburn for co-sponsoring a Bill that

took away free skiing for Senior Citizens at Cannon Mountain.
The Senator has stated that the money that will now be paid by
seniors should go toward paying for poor children to ski at
Cannon.

I dont believe that our Senator should be pitting the young

Senator Woodburn, you have become just another self-interested

politician and an example of why so many of us are fed up with
elected officials.

Drumbeats

"The guy's name is Shorty, he

was super helpful.... there are
two cow skins on the way."

Do your evening conversations

start this way? Well, ours don't
everyday, but this day they did.
Shorty was indeed a kind guy,
and there were indeed two cow
skins in the mail to our address.
Originally it was going to be
goatskins, but it turns out
they're not rugged enough.
Shorty's advice.

Ryan was building a drum - a

taiko drum - to practice the choreography and unique rhythms,
the particular bochi holds, and
the footwork involved with
Japanese drumming.
He
attends evening practices twice
a week in Burlington (yes, that's
as far away from Dorchester as
you think it is), and is in love
with this style of percussion.
The creative energy, the martial
precision, the importance of
both sound and space to creating these Asian beats; just a
mention of the art leaves him
grinning. And I grin to see him
so happy.

Of course, training twice a

week is paltry when one wants
to be a serious student. Still,
purchasing a real taiko drum is
a significant expense, and one
that's hard to justify given the
sub-par storage space of our

woodsy cabin. So what is the

alternative, the recommended
practice drum? Take a section
of large culvert (these drums
are big, and stand waist tall)
and tighten a skin over it. The

from the Electronic Frontier
Foundation
at
http://www.eff.org/wp/effs-top12-ways-protect-your-online-privacy
Do not reveal personal information inadvertently.

You may be shedding personal

details, including e-mail addresses and other contact information,
without even knowing it unless
you properly configure your Web
browser. In your browsers
Setup,
Options
or
Preferences menus, you may
wish to use a pseudonym instead
of your real name, and not enter
an e-mail address, nor provide
other personally identifiable
information that you dont wish
to share. When visiting a site you
trust you can choose to give them
your info, in forms on their site;
there is no need for your browser
to potentially make this information available to all comers. Also
be on the lookout for systemwide Internet defaults programs on your computer (some
examples include Windows
Internet Control Panel, and
MacOSs
Configuration
Manager, and the third-party Mac
utility named Internet Config).
While they are useful for various
things, like keeping multiple Web
browers and other Internet tools

consistent in how the treat downloaded files and such, they

should probably also be
anonymized just like your browser itself, if they contain any fields
for
personal
information.
Households with children may
have an additional security
problem - have you set clear
rules for your kids, so that they
know not to reveal personal
information unless you OK it on
a site-by-site basis?
2) Turn on cookie notices in your
Web browser.

Cookies are tidbits of information that Web sites store on your

computer, temporarily or moreor-less permanently. In many
cases cookies are useful and
inocuous. They may be passwords and user IDs, so that you
do not have to keep retyping
them every time you load a new
page at the site that issued the
cookie. Other cookies however,
can be used for data mining
purposes, to track your motions
through a Web site, the time you
spend there, what links you click
on and other details that the company wants to record, usually for
marketing purposes. Most cookies can only be read by the party
that created them. However,
some companies that manage
online banner advertising are, in
essence, cookie sharing rings.
They can track which pages you
load, which ads you click on,
etc., and share this information
with all of their client Web sites
(who may number in the hundreds, even thousands.) Some
examples of these cookie sharing
rings are DoubleClick, AdCast
and LinkExchange. For a demonstration of how they work, see:
http://privacy.net/

Browsers are starting to allow

user control over cookies.
Netscape, for example, allows
you to see a notice when a site
tries to write a cookie file to your
hard drive, and gives you some
information about it, allowing
you to decide whether or not to
accept it. (Be on the lookout for
cookies the function of which is
not apparent, which go to other
sites than the one you are trying
to load, or which are not temporary). It also allows you to automatically block all cookies that
are being sent to third parties (or
to block all cookies, entirely, but
this will make some sites inoperable). Internet Explorer has a
cookie management interface in

backbeat for him. I'm not a natural, and instead settled in to

the roll of fan and cheerleader.

So our woods, so quiet and

peaceful, remain so.... except
for those moments when it
seems like the heartbeat of the
land is emanating from our
clearing. And then, well, perhaps you can imagine the joy
and the creativity that is riding
that rhythm, to be carried on the
breeze.

addition to Netscape-like features, allowing you to selectively

enable or disable cookies on a
site-by-site basis, even to allow
cookies for a site generally, but
delete a specific cookie you are
suspicious about. With Internet
Explorer you can also turn on
cookies for a site temporarily
then disable them when you no
longer need them (e.g., at an
online bookstore that requires
cookies to process an order, but
whom you dont want to track
what books you are looking at,
what links you are following,
etc., the rest of the time.) Turning
on cookie warnings will cause
alert boxes to pop up, but after
some practice you may learn to
hit Decline so fast that you
hardly notice them any more.
The idea is to only enable cookies on sites that require them
AND whom you trust. You may
also wish to try out alternative
browsers like Mozilla (Windows,
Mac, Linux), Opera (Windows,
Mac, Linux), Konqueror (Linux),
and iCab (Mac), which may offer
better cookie management.

You can also use cookie management software and services. A

Java-based solution called
Muffin ( http://muffin.doit.org/ )
is also available. While it will run
on Mac, Windows and Unix systems, it is definitely for power
users, as it is complicated to set
up and operate effectively. One
more (Windows) is CookiePal
( http://www.kburra.com/cpal.ht
ml. The one program I recommend is Ccleaner you can find it
at
(
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner). There are also numerous
cookie eater applications, some
which run on a schedule or in the
background, that delete cookie
files for you. As with turning off
cookies entirely, you may have
trouble accessing sites that
require certain cookies (though
in most cases the worst that will
happen is that youll have to reenter a login ID and password
you thought were saved.)
Eating the cookies periodically
still permits sites to track what
youre doing for a short time
(i.e., the time between successive
deletion of your cookie file), but
thwarts attempts to discern and
record your actions over time.
I Hope this is helpful, any questions

Dear Friends, these words in Scripture

are so important. God calls us to forgive. It is
imperative that we forgive. Here are some
words to help you to understand about
forgiving. Meditate on them. Let them heal
you. Let them do their perfect work.
Matthew 6:14-15; 1 John1:9; Isaiah 43:2526; Acts 3:19; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 10:7;
Daniel 9:9; Colossians 1:13-14. Gods Word is
water for your soul, and wisdom to live by.

Pulling Weeds And

Grilling____________
Pulling weeds. Cleaning up
flower beds. Trimming back
bushes. Thinning out saplings.
Breaking out the grill for the
first time of the season and generally getting things done. After
a weekend of outdoor work, we
come back to the office with
battle scares and scrapes, a hint
of grill smoke on the skin, a
strong sense of satisfaction--accomplishment. We work our
yards, planters, driveways, just
about anything outdoors and
shy away from those in. Why?
Perhaps its an effect of our
cold winters. Maybe it completes some basic human need
to be outside. Or I could imagine, at least in my case, it has
something to do with a deeply
rooted desire to cook everything outdoors. Thank you grill.
Thank you sun. Thank you
grass. Thank you trees. Thank
you outside. Thank you spring.
Lets get outside and get to gardening, cleaning. Then, when
alls said and done, lets invite
our friends and neighbors over.
Lets grill. Lets bask in the
warm rays of the afternoon sun,
laugh and share the days challenges and accomplishments
over an iced tea and burger.
