LTC 4240: Art for Children

Lesson Title & Big Idea*: Exploring our Solar System

Lesson Overview/Summary*: (This is like an abstract of the structure and procedures section)
Students will go on an interactive scavenger hunt in the classroom to start their learning process
of the solar system. This will allow the students to create a basis of knowledge and find a planet
they have an interest in to do research on. Teacher will select what planet each student will work
on based on preference. Student will research and write a one-page summary of what they have
learned about their planet and then create a picture of the planet using a variety of resources.
Key Concepts for each area (1-2 each): What you want the
students to know.*
1. Visual Art: How to use resources/what is available to them
to create an image with more detail
2. Literacy: How to use information gathered to write an
informative paper with details supported.

Grade Level*: 4
Class Periods Required:
(please circle)
1

3 (4 or 5)

Essential Questions (1-2)*:

How can I use information I have gathered to create an
informative paper?
How can I use information to create an image?

Lesson Objectives/Goals: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): What

you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to create an image of a planet using visual resources and informational resources to
add detail
2. Literacy: The students will be able to write a short paper using information gathered by researching that they have
determined to be important/interesting to them
Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)

(3-4)

1. Visual Art (May use NAEA National standards): VA 2: Identify and

create center of interest (focal point)
2. Literacy: CA 4, 2.1: Composetextwitha.aclearcontrollingideab.relevant

Instructional Strategies (Teachers approach to helping students

achieve learning)
Teacher will model frequently and have directions clearly
posted. Teacher is accessible to answer questions and stop
and discuss with students so they understand the importance

Lesson Structure & Procedure(s) Sequence of events of the lesson

elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g.
Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion ,please be
very specific, walk me through step by step of the What of what is
happening with a rationale as to WHY you are doing this):

1. Students will walk into the classroom and it will be set up a

little differently than normal. The space will be more open
because they will be doing a scavenger hunt and they will
need more room. There will also be clear stations set up
around the room.
2. Students will be instructed to sit down on the carpet/main
floor space. We will talk about what we know about space
already. Teacher will explain that there are 18 stations/fact
cards. Teacher will put students in pairs or trios that have
already been set up and explain you will go around to the
stations with your partner(s) and fill out a worksheet. Teacher
will model what moving from station to station looks like.
There will be fewer groups than stations so try to avoid
multiple groups at one station.
3. Students will enact scavenger hunt and fill out work sheet
4. Students will come back to the carpet and discuss what
they did. Teacher will relate this process to gathering
information/researching.
5. Teacher introduces project. Students will be given a slip of
paper to write their top 3 preferences for planets/sun and
teacher will assign based off of those for the next class
period.
Day two:
6. Students will be assigned their planet/the sun
7. This is a research day about their planet/sun. The teacher
will model how we find information. There will be books and
websites given to use to look for information.
8. They will mainly be taking notes and categorizing
information based off importance and what it is about. They

will also be required to collect at least 2 pictures of their

planet/sun.
Day 3:
9. Students will receive an outline for their short paper. They
will have an outline of needing 3 facts about their planet/sun.
They will need a fact and why they thought it was
interesting/important.
10. Students will use their notes from research to write their
short paper. This may take more than one day, so do not try
to rush them.
Day 4 or 5:
11. Students will create a picture of their planet using images
they collected and information gained. They can use oil
pastels, paint, crayons, colored pencils, and markers.
Basically, any tool available. The paper sizes will be precut
with sizes being somewhat relevant to the planet size.
After dry:
12. Teacher will connect the paper to bottom of picture post
around the room/in the hallway.
13. Students will do a gallery walk to look at their classmates
creations. Students will be prompted to write a question or a
compliment/comment on a paper next to it.
Opening (Gaining Attention, what will you show, or demonstrate)*:
Students will walk into the classroom and see their room is set
up differently than normal, which is a sign something is
different which will catch their attention. Students will discuss
what they know about space and then will go on a scavenger
hunt. The scavenger hunt is interactive and they get to move
about and have fun for a class period, so this should be an
engaging time for them to plant a seed for the interest in the
topic.

Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set, how will student share what they
learned):
Student will have creation posted in the room for the other students to
interact with. Students will be required to write a comment/question and
the creator will be able to answer the questions and use the comments to
reflect on what they have learned.

Formative Assessment strategy: (how will you assess while the
learning is happening?)

Summative Assessment strategy*:

Teacher will look at papers to see if students used information
gathered and supported it, which is a large part of
researching: finding data and supporting it to get a message
across.

Before the lesson, we will talk about what we already know

about space. After the scavenger hunt, we will discuss what
we learned that interested us. We will also discuss how this
relates to researching, which is what we will be doing next.
While researching, we will have discussions about determining
importance versus just something we found interesting
(though this will be mostly finding things we find interesting).
What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (what do they need to already know)
Students wont necessarily need a lot of prior knowledge for this activity. They will need a general understanding of writing
informational papers and how we gather information, though this will be modeled and there will be an outline.

Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning
Students will need to have access to iPads/laptop cart for their research day. If this is not available, they will only use books
and there would no longer be a technology component.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
Students will be able to research using the resource they want and create using the tools they want. They determine what is
important to them and how they would like to represent it.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have learned something?)
Teacher will have discussions before, after, and even during activities to relate what they are doing to a bigger picture. For
example, after taking notes we can discuss, why did you decide to write that fact down versus another one? Maybe they
already knew a fact, they found a fact interesting, it seemed important, etc. and we would discuss these responses and how
that relates to how scientists or other knowledge explorers do research.
Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences,
cultural and language differences, etc.

The scavenger hunt is fast paced in the original lesson that is from, but I would extend it to be more time. Everything is spaced
out into multiple days so students have time to do the detailed work they would like to do. For increase in rigor, students could
be allowed to add on more facts to explain and support. Assignment can be shortened or lengthened for differentiated
instruction.
