Copyright/Fair Use Assignment
The internet is full of music, videos, pictures, and information, but you cant use any of it
without knowing the rules of copyright, and fair use. What is Copyright? According to
plagiarismtoday.com (What is Copyright? 2016) Copyright is a law that gives you ownership
over the things you create. This applies to anything you create electronically, or physical. What
is Fair use? Stanford.edu says fair use is a defense against a claim of copyright infringement.
(Stanford University, 2015) This means that you can use others work as long as it applies to the
fair use policy. How is Fair Use different from Copyright? Copyright is what restricts people
from using someones work and passing it off as their own, and Fair Use allows people to use
work under specific rules.
Why should producers of multimedia works respect the works of other producers?
Producers of multimedia works should respect the works of other producers because they could
be fined, taken to jail, kicked off of the media, etc. Most importantly the creator put time and
effort into their work, and you could be deducting their pay. Rely on others work also lowers
creativity. There needs to be a diverse form of media in order to have a smarter society, and
stealing work isnt making it more diverse. It is very important you know the rules of Copyright,

and Fair Use because it isnt hard to unintentionally violate these rules. Often educators
unintentionally violate these copyright aburn.edu says teachers often make copies, change work
in some way, distribute the work, and publicly the work of producers.(Auburn University, 2016)
All of these things violate Copyright law, because they pass them off as their own. According to
auburn.edu teachers are allowed to use ideas, use facts, short phrases, and government
works.(Auburn University, 2016)
I think educators should emphasize Copyright law and Fair Use, because it is essential to
in this day and age. Personally I would teach students at a young age about how to cite sources,
and what to use and what not to use. I would teach them how it can affect other people's lives,
how you can get kicked out of school, fined, and up to 10 years in jail. What I would do to
educate them is make my own worksheets on Copyright rules, and Fair use. If teachers were to
use Copyright and Fair use they would be a good role model.
NETS plays a role in Copyright and Fair Use because it represents how you should act on
the internet. There are many legal problems with borrowing other's work but if you know number
5 of NETS then you will understand what, and what not to use.
