Spare Parts - Reading Response Journal 1

Reading Response Journals (RRJs) are an informal space for you to explore the readings as well as your own reading
process. The first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. RRJs should include the
following:

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information about
setting (place and time).

In the authors note the motivation of this book is shown, starting on June 01, 2004: when a journalist received an
unexpected e-mail from Marcos Garciaacosta: an account manager from Intel in Arizona. The purpose of this e-mail
was to inform the achievments of a small robotics team who were from a poor neighborhood in West Phoenix. The team
was composed of four latino teenagers from Carl Hayden Community High School, that were taught by their teacher
Fredi Lajvardi. In the introduction the author began with the day of the competition on June 25, 2004 at the University
of California, when Christian Arcega, Lorenzo Santillan, Oscar Vasquez and Luis Aranda: the members of this unknown
team were evaluated by three judges, between them: Tom Swean and Lisa Spence. Among many different groups with
sophisticated underwater-robots, theirs wasnt the most well-designed. In spite of their race, where they came from and
socioeconomic status, they seemed to impress the judges.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned chapters.
This section is a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

At the beginning of the reading I did not feel interested with the books topic. After a couple sentences I felt connected
with the authors first thought at the moment he received the e-mail. Sometimes, when we do not know where an e-mail
or any information originate we usually delete it. Then I felt offended with how the author describes the Mexican
American appearance on page 3: as kids sporting gold chains, fake diamond rings, and patchy, adolescent mustaches.
I think anybody deserves to be categorized with a stereotype. Also, from pages 3 to 6 I thought it was rude how the
judges surmised and defined the robotics team based on the High School they attended. Finally, despite this points I
found interesting the way the author shows the amazing team and its abilities. I am thrilled to continue reading the
story until I get to the end.

2 discussion questions. These should be openended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not fact
based yes or no questions.
Why does the name of the School you attend or where you come from a determine to indicate a
persons educational level?
Why does the Latino or Hispanic race is a topic of judgement in America? Is it with all Latinos or only
Mexicans? Is there the same prejudice in other countries?
Why does the author describe Mexican American as kids sporting gold chains, fake diamond rings,
and patchy, adolescent mustaches? Is it a stereotype to recognize them?

While I was reading,I started highlighting all the important points of the story, I underlined information about
characters, important places and dates. I also circled any words I did not know to learn their definition and improve
my vocabulary. I decided to read in a quiet place, so I could read it all at once. Even Though it was easy at the
beginning, there were a couple words I did not understand, so I had to re-read each sentence again. As well as it
was easier to catch up the main idea of the story, thanks to the highlighting, underlining and circling. Despite this
detail, I enjoyed my reading and found it interesting.

3-5 significant words from this particular readingwords that you feel are important to understand the text, or
that you have decided to learn to develop your academic vocabulary. Define the words you choose and explain
why you chose them.
1. Thug: a violent man. I choose this word because I have never heard about ir. I felt curious to
know its meaning.

2.

Contraption: a piece of equipment that looks strange a machine with an odd appearance.
I choose this word because it was an obstacle for me to understand the idea of what the
author was trying to say.

3.

Downtrodden: treated badly by people who have power over you treated wrong by
people with power. I choose this word because it was not familiar for me, so it was difficult
for me to understand the description the author gave in the sentence.

You will receive complete credit on every RRJ (20 points) by thoughtfully completing the steps as described above,
looking at the rubric to check completeness, and by turning your RRJ in on time. The RRJs are a space for you to think
through the readings without having to worry too much about grammar, organization, and the other requirements of more
formal writing assignments. However, do follow basic rules such as capitalizing I and using appropriate language.

Reading Response Journals (RRJs) are an informal space for you to explore the readings as well as your own reading process. The
first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. RRJs should include the following:

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information about setting
(place and time).

From pages 9 to 14:

Lorenzo Santillan was born in Zitacuro, Mexico. In 1988, at the age of 9 months old he was moved to the US in seek of medical
attention because he was dropped by his mother Laura Alicia Santillan. While he got older his head took an egg shape which with
his unibrow and hair like a mullet would be the reason for kids to tease him. He went through uncomfortable situations such as
carrying marihuana in 7th grade, being humiliated of doing nothing in the marching band walk in Carl Hayden Community High
School and held back a year in first grade. All these things made him feel he did not belong anywhere and the constant mocking
made Lorenzo's anger grow in time leading him to decide to pick fights. Finally, he found his truth interests while helping his
godfather Hugo Ceballos in his informal business of fixing cars. He learned many things, but most of all, he learned that it is
important to be creative, to accept changes and try to adapt with circumstances.

From pages 15 to 19
In 1868, the city of Phoenix was founded by Jack Swilling. While the time passed by many changes were made to help distribute,
divide and define the land. The constant changes on the economic system from the need of manufacturing during World War II; to
the labor or agriculture and develop of high-tech industries which include a wide range of jobs offers made the population grew
and moved from one place to another. By 1990, the city had grown to 1 million of residents who were established in different
areas, the East side for Caucasians and the West side for Mexicans. This happened to concern schools either, many of them were
not satisfied to have a huge amount of Hispanic students, but after trying to deal with it from 1974 to 2004, Carl Hayden, one of
them ended to have 98 percent of Hispanics; meanwhile in other districts such as Scottsdale and Mesa had white students. As the
East and West were classified, also its evolution continued to develop, except for West Phoenix which was left into oblivion,
considered dangerous, dirty, hopeless and hot.

From pages 20-30

Christian Arcega grow up in Mexicali, Mexico. He had a fragile appearance and unlucky fortune to not have a specific talent but he
was extremely smart. In seek of new opportunities, Juan Arcega, his father decided to move his family to Stanfield Arizona in
November of 1995. He was taunted by teachers and classmates of not knowing English, but in spite of this he felt he was smarter
than the rest. At the age of 9, the family moved to a pink trailer in West Phoenix called Catalina Villages, where he suddenly
developed allergies to almost everything, he was told to stay in home what helped him improve his English by watching Bob Vilas
show every day. Later, he tried to apply for an IB program in North High School, but unfortunately there were not more spaces
available, then he decided to go to Carl Hayden, where he met Fredi Lajvardi whom was encouraging his students to start building
robots, the only thing Christian was most interested about since he was 5 years old.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned chapters. This
section is a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

Throughout my reading I experienced moments when I did not feel interested and others when I did. From pages 9 to 14 I felt
indignated about the things Lorenzo had to go through, also by being mocked because of his appearance, this is something most of
us may have encountered in our lives, it makes us feel unworthy and lonely. In spite of the uncomfortable moments he had to deal
with, I find it pleasant that when he finally found what he was good at, I like the beautiful message he gained while helping his
godfather, the best way to deal with life is by being creative, accepting changes and trying to adjust to every situation.
From pages 15 to 19, I started feeling bored, though it was interesting to know how the City of Phoenix grew and developed since
it was founded, I considered it was not fair how the city was divided even though circumstances lead them to live like that, I think
the reason why West Phoenix turned into a hopeless area was not only because of Mexicans, it was because of the population as a
whole. Moreover, I felt disappointed on how schools felt despaired of having so many Hispanic people, despite their appearance
and cultural origins they could prove to be excellent people to encounter.
From pages 20 to 30, I felt interested how Christian in a short age could develop and show abilities by improvising with the family
radio and try to come with something new, even if it did not have a happy ending. I thought it was cruel how the other kids and
teachers teased him, instead of helping him, I can understand that sometimes kids like to play around but as a grown up I consider
the teachers had a wrong reaction towards him. Finally I felt excited to read about someone who wanted to be part of the IB, took
the challenge and learned more, although he could not make it. It was fascinating to know how he ended in Fredi Lajvardi class.
Now the pieces are starting to be linked together.

2 discussion questions. These should be openended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not fact based
yes or no questions.

1. Why do Hispanic people are not attached to follow rules as Caucasians do, such as being clean, organized and
respectful?
2. With so many failed strategies developed through years to stop bullying? Is there a possible method to control it?
What would it be?

While I was reading, I continued with my previous strategy, I started highlighting but this time I used two different highlighters, a
yellow one for main ideas and a pink one for other sentences I considered relevant. Also, I underlined important dates and
descriptions. Then, as long as I read I circled all those words I did not know. This time I found many words, that is why it was
harder for me to understand some paragraphs, but at the end I managed to comprehend the most important points. At the beginning
I was very focused on my reading, although I decided to do it in a quiet place to make it easier for me to concentrate, I couldnt
finish my reading in that moment, so I continued later. Additionally, though I found the information sometimes a little boring and
got distracted with my telephone, there were a few things that captivate my attention. Furthermore when I was doing my RRJ I
realized there were a lot of information to work with, so I decided for the next time to start taking notes of essential points of the
chapters to be able to summarize accurately all the information.

3-5 significant words from this particular readingwords that you feel are important to understand the text, or that you
have decided to learn to develop your academic vocabulary. Define the words you choose and explain why you chose them.

1. Lump: A small piece of something solid that does not have a definite shape. I choose this word because it
catched my attention at the beginning of the reading. I have never seen it before and I wanted to understand what the
author was trying to say in the description of Lorenzo in the book.
2. Smug: Showing that you are very satisfied with how smart, lucky, or good you are. I choose this word because
it did not allow me to understand a whole sentence of the book.
3. Ratcheted: Cause something to rise (or fall) as a step in what is perceived as a steady and irreversible process. I
choose this word because It was an obstacle for me to understand.
4.

Ripple: To move in small waves. I choose this word because it was not familiar to me.

5. Smitten: To suddenly feel that you love someone very much. I choose this word because I felt intrigued to
know its meaning.

You will receive complete credit on every RRJ (20 points) by thoughtfully completing the steps as described above, looking at the

follow basic rules such as capitalizing I and using appropriate language.

first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. RRJs should include the following:

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information about setting

From pages 31 to 36
Since July 27 1997, Phoenix would have taken some actions against all Mexicans. Mexicans were treated as parasites and aliens in
the country. People such as the presidential candidate Patrick J Buchanan and Joe Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa County, believed that
Mexicans were trying to take and conquer the territory of California, Arizona and Texas that they had lost during the MexicanAmerican War in 1846-1848. In the suburb of Chandler, described as one of the most inhabited area of aliens in the world, by
James Dailey, an immigration and naturalization intelligence agent, the police started scanning each area looking for any person
who had appearance of Mexican and spoke Spanish, 432 hispanic looking people were caught, they were forced, sometimes bitten
by a dog and threatened with a gun to get inside of a van to be deported, even though most of them did not have criminal records
they were treated as if they were one. This assault immediately grew, starting from the suburb of Mesa where 159 suspected illegal
immigrants were apprehended by march of 2000, then to an operation of one hundred of agents who were commanded to go to
Phoenix Sky Harbor airport and Las Vegas McCarran International Airport looking for more immigrants and finally by 2004,
organizations such as the minutemen, ranch rescue and american border patrol followed the actions of Roger Barnett, a rancher
who declared an open season of immigrants, looking for more illegal immigrants.

From pages 37 to 53
Oscar Vasquez was born in Mexico, he lived in the town of Temosachic with his mother Manuela, his father Ramiro, oldest brother
Pedro and his sister Luz. In December 12 1998, 10 months after his first try to cross the border with fake green cards, Manuela
decided to go back to the US in seek of better opportunities for Oscar, they took a bus to Agua Prieta and were escorted by two
coyotes throughout the desert and across the border to arrive into Phoenix. Oscar returned to Isaac middle school after his first time
in the country, now he started to understand the language but couldn't make any friends, reason why, after he was assigned to Carl
Hayden he decided to try out the football team and playing soccer, but neither of them worked out. Finally he decided to signed up
for MSJ, Glen Goins reserve officer training corps ROTC, where he would learn and be trained in the ways of the army. After a
pleasant welcome, the well developed values of the group made him feel he belonged somewhere. His constant effort, succeed and
desire to serve the country helped him became the commander of the adventure training team, the best cadet the program had ever
seen, the major and the battalion's executive officer. His crushed dreams to be enlisted for the army was his motivation to give his
everything, what finally made him obtain the JROTC officer of the year trophy, but despite his amazing effort he had to realize he
wasn't to be able to be part of it, that is when on his senior year in October of 2003 he entered into Fredi Lajvardi marine science
class and he knew what he will do next.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned chapters. This section is
a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

From pages 31 to 36
This time while reading the new chapter I felt attracted to the information, it is interesting all the things I have learned of the US
because of this book. Despite all the things I learned, I felt indignated for the many people just like me have gone through, for
example, when one pregnant woman was forced to be inside of a van with a temperature of 101 degrees outside and with no water.
I thought it was inconsiderate and shameful even though she may have entered the country illegally, she was still pregnant and a
human being. No one deserves to be treated like animals or criminals, there are so many strategies to solve situations like that one.
Also, how Mexicans were treated like aliens and parasites made me feel concerned what Americans might think of me as an
immigrant and Hispanic.
From pages 37 to 53
During this chapter I experienced many thoughts about Oscar's life. First of all, I thought it was unfair how Oscars opinion wasnt
taken it into consideration, how his mother was more preoccupied for her other children than him, despite that he was the youngest
one and may have needed more attention. Also, I believe he didnt deserve to go through all the process of crossing the border with
his mom, it is hard for a kid to experience that kind of situation at short age. Furthermore, I felt sorry for Oscar when he couldn't
achieve his goal to be part of the army. Despite of all the tough things and experiences he had gone through, I think it was for the
best, because of all those moments he could grow up and developed an incredible attitude of greatness and thirst of more.

2 discussion questions. These should be openended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not fact based yes or
no questions.

If we all are human beings, why did the police officers treat Mexican with no respect and dignity while they
were caught and deported?
Why do illegal people cannot enlist for the army and navy if they have been living in the country for too long
and have the courage to serve the country?

at once, I started one day and continued the next two days, even though I didn't finish it all at once I was still focused on the
information. Finally, the time went quickly because I thought it was interesting what the author narrated between pages 31 to 53.

3-5 significant words from this particular readingwords that you feel are important to understand the text, or that you
have decided to learn to develop your academic vocabulary. Define the words you choose and explain why you chose them.
1. Raid: A sudden attack on an enemy by troops, aircraft, or other armed forces in warfare. I choose this word
because it appeared several times in the book and attracted my attention to know its meaning.
2. Grizzled: Having or streaked with gray hair. I choose this word because I have never heard or read it before.
3. Beaming: Shine brightly. I choose this word because it sounded interesting and I wanted to add it to my
vocabulary.
4. Smuggling: Move (goods) illegally into or out of a country. I choose this word because I did not know about it.
While my reading I saw it a couple times and it was an obstacle for me to understand what the author was trying to say.
5. Infatuated: Be inspired with an intense but short-lived passion or admiration for. I choose this word because it
captivated my attention, it sounded elegant and I wanted to know its meaning.

From pages 54 to 61:
Fredi lajvardi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1965. In 1966 he moved to Ohio with his parents Reza and Tooran, after 7 years he
moved back to Iran and finally he returned to Phoenix a year later. He had two skills, he used to be part of the cross-country and
built things. While being at high school, he enrolled in a class where he developed his passion for building vehicles, which he
returned to help his teacher Ann Justus by the time he started college, meanwhile he noticed he wasnt interested in medicine and
decided to take education courses. He worked at Camelback and then at Carl Hayden, where he met his wife Pam Nunez in 1996,
whom he had two children that suffered from mental disorders, and later in 2002, he met Christian Arcega, Oscar Vasquez and
Lorenzo Santillan when they arrived at his class.
From pages 62 to 65:
Dean Kamen created a private research and development laboratory with the money he earned from a self-regulating syringe he
invented. He also constructed a science museum above his laboratory. One day in 1989, he received a group of children who didn't
know anything about science at his museum, he felt concerned that kids weren't interested in science and technology, what made
him create a robot contest that would attract kids attention. He recruited important people from Apple, IBM and Google, also he
brought engineers from ATT, Boeing Xerox and others to this new and spread across the country competition called FIRST. Fredi
Lajvardi saw this information in 1999 and felt excited to encourage his students to participate.
From pages 66 to 69:
Allan Cameron was born in San Francisco. Ever since he was a kid, he was interested in communication, which is what lead him to
make a radio antenna when he got older. He married Debbie and even though he didn't like the idea of being a teacher at the
beginning, he gave it a try and started at Vista del Camino where he got his patience challenged by disrespectful students. Later, by
1986 he heard about a computer science school and even though it didn't match with his plans to teach at college level,in 1987 he

was motivated to teach at Carl Hayden knowing that he was the only one who knew about programming and he would be free to
select how to teach. Finally he decided to work with Fredi in 2000.
From pages 70 to 73:
In 2001 and 2002 the carl hayden robotics team started. In 2003 they competed in the Arizona Regionals and also in the First
Competition. In May, Christian got into Fredis class but it was too late to work with a new robot and Fredi invited him to be part of
their new project, building a trebuchet. Then Lorenzo appeared in the classroom and they find their own interests in the classroom
and helped Fredi with what they know to do. They both had different skills but Fredi saw something more in them, passion,
curiosity and intelligence.
From pages 74 to76:
One day a group of students from Wilson Charter High School went to Buffalo, New York to participate in a boat race. They were
lead by their teacher Julia Reaney, whom took them into a trip to the Niagara Fall. While she tried to give them the chance to have a
better look from the Port of Entry building, she found an immigration agent who ended to take four of her students because they
werent US citizens, they almost got deported, but after a trial they were allowed to stay in the country with the constant fear that
they might be detained and deported later.
From pages 77 to 80:
In 2003, Cristian and Lorenzo signed to be part of Fredis robotics class. They were now preparing to build a catapult with Michael
Hancks help. After a while, Oscar Vasquez joined the group to be their leader and help them improve their trebuchet design. They
had scheduled the presentation of their new project in October of 2003 in a pumpkin-hurling contest in Gilbert, Arizona. Lorenzo
woke up later that day and didnt join the group, because of his absence during the presentation of the catapult they couldnt get the
first place and won the second one.
From pages 81 to 84:
Luis Aranda was born in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He moved to Phoenix in July 21, 1991, with his mother Maria Garcia, his
grandfather, aunt and two cousins. His father Pedro was a butcher, what helped him later get the permanent residency and gave his
wife and son green cards. By the time he was growing up he ended to be taller and fatter than other kids. He didnt like school, but
he developed a passion for cooking. When his senior year arrived he thought it would be a perfect time to get some extra credit
before graduation, then he joined the robotics team where he got to spend more time with Oscar, who treated him like a normal
person.
From pages 85 to 86:
In 2003 before the school year started, Fredi and Allan went to a week summer workshop in Monterey, California. They learned
about a robotics competition which was trying to mix marine science and robotics. Also the seminar had another objective to help
teachers learned how to start an underwater-robotics team. This little vacation made them become great friends and encouraged
them to start their own team with their robotics club students at Carl Hayden.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned chapters. This section is
a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

From pages 54 to 61:

While reading these pages I couldnt stop thinking about all the things Fredi Lajvardi had to go through. I couldnt understand why
the kids at his school wanted to hurt him for being an Iranian when he didnt have the fault of what was going on between their
countries. Also I felt sad and concerned when he talked about his situation with his parents, I cannot imagine how he would have
felt and what he might thought, it must not be easy for a son to be reproached by their own parents. However, what concerned me
the most was about his children, I do not understand how he was able to support his family and also all his students without falling
apart, it is amazing all the things he dealt with and how he acted towards life.
From pages 62 to 65:
When I was reading these pages I started thinking about what Dean Kamen asked to the kids and parents about science, if they
knew about any scientist or if there were any other experiment they would like to create. This made me realized that most of us
have been blind for many years, we do not stop and think what is going on with the scientific world? we care for other things that
sometimes are not going to give us knowledge. I think we should start caring more about science, because that is one of the thing
that will lead us to our future.
From pages 66 to 69:
In these pages I found something that kept my attention. As I read about the disrespectful kids in Allans class, I started to
remember about a similar case I experienced in High School. I remember a couple of kids that used to think that by having a bad

behavior or being rude they will be cool and other kids would follow them. Also, there were others that prefered to be bad
students, they thought that by having good grades they would be nerds and nobody would like them. Despite that I have always
consider this thought a little immature, I know a lot of people may go through it.
From pages 70 to 73:
When I read these pages I found it amazing how Cristian and Lorenzo were able to find a place where they felt comfortable. It was
interesting to see in which areas they could develop their skills and how they could help in the lab. Moreover, it made me feel sad
how Lorenzo felt when Fredi Lajvardi invited him to go to Mcdonald's, it made me think how incredible is when a person who does
not have what some of us do can make huge changes in their lives and be successful in anything they propose to.
From pages 74 to76:
While reading this chapter I felt concerned about those kids who had to go through an uncomfortable situation at Niagara Falls, I
know that we are supposed to be free and able to do everything we want, America is a free country; however I consider if the
teacher knew most of her students were not legal, she should had been more careful to the situations that may appeared. Despite
this, I believe kids do not deserve to go through this kind of situations, this is something that might be hard for them to forget.
From pages 77 to 80:
As I was reading these pages I thought it was incredible how Oscar quickly found an error in Hancks design. They were all
intelligent but Oscar stood out and helped modify the catapult in order to win the competition. Besides, another thing that
captivated my attention was how Lorenzo was perceived, I consider if they all have gone through a kind of bullying because of their
appearance or race they shouldnt have judged him before getting to know him.

From pages 81 to 84:

When I was reading these pages I found three things that I considered interesting. At the beginning I thought it was so cute and
sweet how Luis Aranda developed a true feeling towards the Japanese woman, I think not everyone is lucky to find someone
besides of their mother to care and respect as well. Also, I thought it was unfair that he felt rejected for others because he
intimidated them , sometimes our prejudice can tear us apart from someone who could be important for us, someone to count with.
Furthermore, what attracted me the most was one of his interests, cooking, he loved to cook just as I love to do it.
From pages 85 to 86:
Finally, as I was reading these last pages I found it exciting to finally know where the idea of a underwater-robotics team came
from. Additionally, I think it was interesting to know where and how Fredi and Allan made their friendship stronger.

word because I was intrigued to know its meaning.

Spare Parts - Reading Response Journal 5

Reading Response Journals (RRJs) are an informal space for you to explore the readings as well as your own reading process. The
first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. RRJs should include the following:

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information about setting
(place and time).
From pages 89 to 92
The 2004 MATE Robotics Competition was based on The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which Jill Zande worked with some authors
to create a short story from it, that would improve the robotics teams imagination on the process of building their robots. The
Competition took place at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where the competitors had to bring their ROV to test 7 tasks
inside a pool. Lorenzo and Cristian were worried they wouldnt be able to achieve all the tasks the Competition was asking for. Fredi
and Allan were also worried if they were prepared for the challenge but they thought about the opportunity to accomplish something
they thought they couldnt. The competition was divided into two groups, the Ranger group for high school teams and the Explorer
group for Colleges. Considering this two division Allan and Fredi got the idea to tell their students to enter in the College division,
this would be a way to make them feel less disappointed if they lose at the end.
From pages 93
Allan and Fredi told their students the plan about entering to the College division. At first glance Oscar wasnt sure about losing
against the best engineering school in the country, but with Allan and Fredis motivation he decide to face the challenge .
From pages 94 to 100
In November of 2003, Oscar came to the first design meeting and decided that they should give their best in the competition. After
listening to some quotes from the introduction of the Explorer group assignment they were ready to start building their robot, but
first they would have to collect the money. Luis boss, Oscars previous boss and one employee at the mattress factory helped the
group to collect 900 hundred dollars. Then they made a wooden box model and started brainstorming ideas of the possible things
they could do to make their robot perform all of the required tasks. Finally, they decided to use a tape measure to determine the
length and a laser range finder, which they got borrowed from Greg Detray; a measuring devices company owner, to evaluate the
depth the underwater robot records in the pool.
From pages 101 to 102
Fredi Lajvardi told Lorenzo that he needed to raise his GPA in order to be part of the robotics team. This notice wasnt pleasant for
him considering that he didnt like doing homework. However, his GPA started to go up when he decided to study more, ask
questions to the teacher and ask Cristian for some help in Geometry.
From pages 103 to 104
Considering they had to measure the temperature of the water during the competition, Oscar decided to call a temperature measuring

from Connecticut. While calling the company's number he was able to talk with Frank Swankoski, a temperature engineer who
ended to tell them the thermometer they needed and donated one.
From pages 105 to 108
In November 2003, Fredi schedule a trip to San Diego, California; for the SeaBotix tour in an ROV manufacturer company. The trip
was an amazing opportunity for the robotics team to enjoy the ocean, share together, learn about robots and get a pincer from one of
Donald Rodocker companys prototypes . Unfortunately, there was a problem in the road they were taking back to Phoenix and they
were forced to go through an immigration checkpoint. Even though no one was deported they couldnt avoid to feel their trip
dangerous and pointless.
From pages 109 to 112
While Oscar tried to focus on his determination to achieve all his goals without any fear. Cristian and Lorenzo started to talk about
which materials they were going to use to build the robot. They couldnt afford using metal or glass syntactic foam, so they
decided to use PVC. However, they realized they would need to take the risk of putting the battery inside the robot. This would help
balance the volume of air inside the PVC pipes.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned chapters. This section is
a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

From pages 89 to 92
While reading these pages I was amazed by all the tasks their underwater robot would have to do. Also I realized how important it
was to be part of this competition. Thinking about being part of a competition aside the MIT and other prestigious Universities of the
country, might have been a very frightening decision to make.
From pages 93
What I really like about this page was Allans and Fredis motivation. How they tried to encourage the team even though there were
vast chances to lose.
From pages 94 to 100
When I was reading these pages I was captivated with a few things. I liked the quotes Oscar took from the MATEs introduction to
encourage the team to give their best for this competition, and, I was impressed with Oscars sense of leadership. He took advantage
of every minute they have and try his best to achieve his goal.
From pages 101 to 102
While reading these pages I felt happy for Lorenzo. I know that some people may think Fredis notice wasnt fair, but this was an
opportunity for Lorenzo to connect himself with his studies and stand out. He would be able to show what he was capable of.
From pages 103 to 104
What I liked the most of these pages was Oscars reaction towards the situations. I liked the way he didnt wait time and be
proactive. He was truly a leader, he searched for what they needed, called a company and gave a good impression to the people
whom he was talking with. This helped the group to find some of the tools and implements they needed for the robot.
From pages 105 to 108
When I was reading these pages I was happy to know how Oscar and Luis became friends. Additionally, I was impressed how they
were easily finding all the things they need for their robot, such as the pincer. Moreover, I felt concerned about what it might have
happened if the officer would have asked for their US citizen identification. I couldnt imagined their fear and preoccupation.
From pages 109 to 112
While I was reading these pages I liked Oscars determination. He decided to take the risk and attend the competition despite the
chances of getting deported. Also, I was amazed of Cristians ability to think of other materials that would suit their needs for the
robot.

2 discussion questions. These should be openended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not fact based yes or
no questions.

This time I tried to take advantage of my time, I decided I wanted to finish my RRJ earlier so I started my reading on tuesday while
I was in class, then I continue my reading on wednesday when I was on my way home and, finally finished my reading at home.
While I was reading I only used a yellow highlighter, I highlighted the most important points and tried to pay attention to the rest of
the information so I would be able to make the summary from each pages. Also, I underlined important dates and people that are
mentioned in the book; and circled the words I did not know. The time went quickly, even though there were many pages to read I
felt like I was diving through the information. Despite that I didnt do my reading in a quiet place or in just one place, I manage to
understand the essential points of the pages. Furthermore, when I was doing my RRJ I felt it was easier than other times, the
sentences I highlighted before helped me get the idea of each part.

3-5 significant words from this particular readingwords that you feel are important to understand the text, or that you
have decided to learn to develop your academic vocabulary. Define the words you choose and explain why you chose them.
1. Daunted: Make (someone) feel intimidated or apprehensive. I choose this word because I have seen it a couple
times while reading the book. I was curious to know its meaning.
2. Clamber: Climb, move, or get in or out of something in an awkward and laborious way, typically using both
hands and feet.I choose this word because I have never heard or read it before.
3. Bristled: React angrily or defensively, typically by drawing oneself up. I choose this word because it was an
obstacle for me to understand one of the sentences in the book.
4. Rumble: Utter in a deep, resonant voice. I choose this word because it captivated my attention and I wanted to
know its meaning.
5. Cramped: Feeling or causing someone to feel uncomfortably confined or hemmed in by lack of space. I
choose this word because I have never heard or read it before and I wanted to know its meaning. This would allow me to
expand my vocabulary.

You will receive complete credit on every RRJ (20 points) by thoughtfully completing the steps as described above, looking at the
rubric to check completeness, and by turning your RRJ in on time. The RRJs are a space for you to think through the readings without
having to worry too much about grammar, organization, and the other requirements of more formal writing assignments. However, do
follow basic rules such as capitalizing I and using appropriate language.

Spare Parts - Reading Response Journal 6

Reading Response Journals (RRJs) are an informal space for you to explore the readings as well as your own reading process. The
first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. RRJs should include the following:

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information about setting
(place and time).
From pages 113 to 117
The robotics team turned to out to be a new family for Lorenzo and the robotics closet felt like his new home. However, everything
outside the robotics closet stayed the same. His new look of gold earrings, a gold chain, and a metal watch made other kids tease
him. He tried to ignore the teasing, even when one kid put a ball of gum on his hair, but when another kid called him son of a bitch
he couldnt avoid to hit him. This last experience put him in danger of being expelled since he was told to control his anger and not
get into fights. However, the Principal Steve Ybarra knew the possibilities for Lorenzo to get involved with gangs and he decided to
give him another chance while he was assigned to take anger-management courses. As soon as Fredi received the news he talked
with Lorenzo. He couldnt imagine all the opportunities this talented kid might have lost by being expelled. Furthermore, Fredi told
him about the times he got beat up in high school for being Iranian and one time when he was mocked by his brother. After Lorenzo
heard Fredis experiences and his advice, he realized he was a sweet kid that wasnt able to be the ass kicker his father would like
him to be.
From pages 118 to 120
The third task the ROV needed to do was to locate a barrel and extract the liquid of a 500-milliliter sample from being leaked in the
water. Oscar and Cristian assigned Lorenzo to solve the task while they accomplished other tasks. He tried to work with a balloon
instead of using a rigid container as the ones the other teams used. Also, Fredi proposed to use a sump pump to suction the liquid into
the balloon. However the first sample wasnt successful and he tried to find something that would help him complete the task.
Finally, he took an empty gallon plastic milk container with the balloon and he managed to collect water without spilling it
everywhere.
From pages 121
When Lorenzo felt like things were getting better, he received some news. Lorenzos mother was fired from her job at a Days Inn,
his father was constantly buying beers and for the worst, they received a letter with a foreclosure notice. However he found a
Realtors number in the other mail and after he called him a kind of hope came to his mind.
From pages 122 to 125
While Oscar and Luis were thinking on how many propellers they would need for the robots. They started to think about the motors
they would require. Fredi suggested them to use trolling motors and Oscar googled it. He found a company called Mercury Marine
and after talking with Kevin Luebke he decided to buy 5 discounted motors from the company. Additionally, considering they didnt
have enough money to build a waterproof case for the robots control, they were forced to buy a plastic briefcase for less money.
Furthermore, Lorenzo and Cristian started to cut the segments of PVC pipe for the robots structure. The task was hard for them to
accomplish but Luis managed to cut the 80 pieces in 2 days. While Luis sliced the pipes, the rest of the group started to build the
structure, which had an appearance of a white plastic frame.
From pages 126 to 131
The robotics team decided to join Kamens annual robotics challenge. They had to build a machine that could run by itself while they

collect a variety of balls. Also, teams would be able to earn points if the machine could suspend itself from a bar. The organization
gave the teams a box with the supplies to start building their robots. Allan told the Carl Hayden kids all the soldering tricks they
needed to know, which helped them build a fiberglass frame with 4 wheels. On March 11, 2004, they went to the Arizona Regionals
at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. At the beginning, they had problems with the robots chain but they managed to repair it. They
decided not to collect the balls but make the robot suspend itself from the pull-up bar instead. At the end of the competition, they got
between the 20 first places and the judges gave them the Engineering Inspiration Award, which qualified them to go to the national
championship. Five weeks later, the team was taking a flight to Atlanta for the competition. In one of the matches, the robot's battery
had some problems and it stopped in the middle of the field, but after another driver hit their robot it continued to the pull-up bar.
Even though their robot was placed on the 39th, they learned a lot, walked around downtown and had a great time together.
From pages 132 to 133
After the competition in Atlanta, they decided to use the FIRST controller for their ROV. They started to solder the propellers and
cameras to the controller. Furthermore, Lorenzo realized that other kids stopped teasing him after he started hanging around the
campus with Luis. Finally, he discovered a new interest and he decided to learn more about cooking at Metro-Tech High. Fredi and
Allan didnt want him to leave Carl Hayden and offered him to pay his culinary summer classes.
From pages 134 to 138
Oscar told the team to practice the robots assembling until they were able to do it quickly. As they practiced they managed to take
only 20 minutes to build the robot without mistakes. A few weeks away from the competition they decided to finally glue the pieces
together, they used Christys Red Hot Blue Glue, which its smell was intoxicating. Considering the stinky smell around the robotics
closet they split into teams. They took two hours to build the whole robot, but suddenly they realized that the briefcase didnt fit
inside the three pipes frame. Then Lorenzo suggested to use an electric heat gun and bend the pipe. After finishing the robot they
decided to call it Stinky just how the smell of the glue inside the robotics closet.
From pages 139 to 142
In the summer of 2004; Luis, Cristian, Oscar, Lorenzo and Michael Hank went to the Scuba Sciences at Seventh and Sheridan. Tina
Lowe received the team to test the robot in a saltwater swimming pool. They divided duties and put the robot in the water. Cristian
had to control the joysticks with Hanck while Lorenzo was in charge of the sensor controls. At the beginning, Stinky didnt sink but
after they took two capped pipes, the robot fell to the bottom of the pool. They also had to use an empty bottle to hover the robot
upright. Furthermore, they still got problems with Stinky, at the end it lost control and stopped responding.
From pages 143 to 146
After they returned from the Scuba Sciences, Cristian examined all the things that went wrong with the robot. Then he changed the
cables inside the case and reprogramed the ROVs software. Considering that Lorenzo didnt know how to program, he decided to
give Stinky a new makeover. He used red to the sections Luis should not touch, yellow for the corners and the rest in blue. A week
later they tested the robot and the changes worked. However, the day before the competition Allan and Fredi told them that Hanck
wasnt going with them, what forced the robotics team to return to the Scuba Sciences and teach Oscar how to control the joysticks
with Cristian.
From pages 147 to 149
On June 24, 2004, the team members had planned to gather at the Carl Hayden parking lot before they took the road to Santa
Barbara. At the beginning, they thought they might have to leave without Lorenzo but a few minutes later he appeared. They took the
toolboxes, the two video monitor, and Stinky; and placed them in the school van. Since Oscar and Luis had graduated, they were not
able to go in the van. They got into Fredis car while Lorenzo, Allan and Cristian got into the school van. Throughout the road, they
used a radio to ask each other questions about the robot and get ready for the competition. Unfortunately, Lorenzos enthusiasm
ended when he saw the laborers picking watermelons near the California border. That reminded him of his chance to get into that
position, now that they were renting the house from the Realtor who offered to help his family.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned chapters. This section is
a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

From pages 113 to 117

While reading these pages I thought about all the past situations Lorenzo had gone through. It was great to see that he found a new
family and a new place where he felt comfortable. However, it was lamentable that he still had to deal with the teasing. I cant
understand what was the purpose of those kids to mock him, even calling his mom a whore. Furthermore, I couldnt understand his
dads perspective. How being an ass kicker would be more important than being a good student or creating something most of us
cant.
From pages 118 to 120
What I liked the most of these pages was Fredis attitude towards Lorenzo. He tried to cheer him, so he could trust himself until he

achieved his goal. While Lorenzo tried to solve the task, Fredi was a helpful hand that gave him advice and good comments.
Furthermore, I was intrigued with all the ideas that Lorenzo came up with. He had the ability to transform something simple into
something scientific.
From pages 121
In this page, I was amazed of Lorenzos strength. I cannot imagine how he managed to deal with another thing in his life, but the
worst part was the fact that he might lose his home. Sometimes people feel sad or angry at little details like not being able to travel or
buy something, while Lorenzo had to live in an unstable life and work hard every day.
From pages 122 to 125
While reading these pages I was pleased to see how the robotics team was working together. I liked how each of them found
something to do and solved any problem that appeared.
From pages 126 to 131
In these pages, I liked how they improve their abilities. Even though they didnt get the first place in the competition, their positive
attitude gave them the opportunity to go to the next round. Furthermore, I was amazed at their capacities to easily come with an idea
and solve any problem. Considering the chances to lose and the possibilities that something might go wrong, they kept trying to
move forward.
From pages 132 to 133
What I liked the most of these pages was the fact that Lorenzo found a way to stop other kids from mocking him. His friendship with
Luis made other kids stay away from him. Also, I liked that he found a new interest in cooking, which is one of my interests as well.
From pages 134 to 138
While reading these pages it was funny to know where the name of the robot came. I never thought that the smell of the glue in the
robotics closet would be the reason to name their robot. Also, I thought Oscars organization was incredible, he was a true leader for
the group. I know there was a problem with the briefcase while assembling the pipes but, Oscars attitude in these pages and many
others represents an example of a successful person.
From pages 143 to 146
While reading these pages I thought it was interesting how Cristian was able to think of every detail about the robot. It is amazing
how he was able to know so many things and keep learning even more. Furthermore, it was unfortunate that their plans of having
Hanck with them couldnt be done. However, they were a strong group that wouldnt be stopped at anything. I think that people who
doesnt have everything in their lives are the ones that appreciate things a little bit more than others. This is a message people should
try to apply into their lives, the fact of not giving up through the adversities and be thankful for the things they have.
From pages 147 to 149
In these pages, the robotics team showed the link they had created between them. In order to succeed in the competition, they knew
they would need to work as a whole. I liked the message it brings to people, where you can understand that sometimes we can build
great friendships based on changes in life. Also that there are going to be moments where we have to work as a group if we want to
succeed. We can learn from others and show them what we know.

for the summary, so I decided to make the summary on a different document and re-read it a couple times until all the ideas were
correctly organized.

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information about setting

After the team arrived at the door room in the UCSB campus, they found out Stinky had some issues. At the beginning, it didnt want
to respond to their commands and later, they noticed a leak inside the briefcase. Since they didnt have enough time to solve the
problems, Allan and Fredi told them to prepare for their presentation. The review with the judges Tom Swean and Lisa Spence took
fewer minutes than the other groups however, they felt confident with their answers. Allan and Fredi were not sure about their results
but now the robotics team needed to focus on fixing Stinky. Oscar and Lorenzo decided to stay all night changing the wires, until
Stinky was ready and perfectly working. By the time when the competition started they were faced against 11 teams. There was the
Monterey Peninsula College; who achieved 30 points out of 110, the Cape Fear Community College with 40 points and the MIT with
48 points. When it was Carl Haydens turn, Lorenzo was filling the briefcase with tampons to avoid the leaking problem. The judges
Leah Herbert, Bryan Schaefer and William Kirkwood gave them 30 minutes to do all the missions. They earned 5 points by seeing
the tow-fish, another 5 points for employing the tape measure and 5 more for floating beside the helicopter while trying to estimate
the depth. Finally, they ended with 32 points after they collected a complete sample from a barrel and saw the captains bell. The
winners were going to be announced at dinner. Initially, the judges gave some awards, between them there was the "special
achievement", design and the Technical writing Award, which were assigned to Carl Hayden. Despite that it seemed that they were
between the third and fourth place, Bryce Merrill, the announcer, surprised them when he mentioned their school after Cape Fear
obtained the third place and MIT the second.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned chapters. This section is
a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

While reading this chapter I found myself delighted with the story. At the beginning, I thought they wouldnt be able to win the
competition since they did not have a sophisticated ROV. Then I was worried if they would be able to change the wires on time
because Lorenzo and Oscar said that a single mistake could spoil all the connections. Every page was more interesting than the other.
There was always a reason to doubt Stinkys capacities to do all the tasks however, the robotics teams had a solution for each
problem they encounter. Furthermore, I felt confused when the author mentioned that they won the special achievement award. I
thought this was a sign of their defeat but, as soon as they received the design and Technical writing award I realized they had won
more than a first place. When I read they had won the first place I was happy just like them. I cannot imagine that feeling of being
able to win against colleges and people who have more experience than you. This chapter made me think of the importance of giving
your best and trust in yourself. It was shocking to read how they were able to transform something simple into a machine. They not
only showed their cleverness, they also showed that you can accomplish any goal no matter where you come from.

2 discussion questions. These should be openended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not fact based yes or

How did the robotics team know so many things with a high school educational level?
What would have happened if the judges knew that most of the robotics team members did not have a
legal status?

Reading Response Journals (RRJs) are an informal space for you to explore the readings as well as your own reading process. The
first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. RRJs should include the following:

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information about setting
(place and time).
After the robotics team triumph in the competition, everything stayed the same, their legal status did not change and they were still
wondering what they will do with their future. The anti-immigrant sentiment continued when Rusell Pearce, the Arizona state
representative and the Arizona voters suggested the Proposition 200. Later, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and President Bush encouraged
civilians to hunt illegal immigrants. At this point, any hope to go to college or have a decent job seemed pointless to the Carl Hayden
kids; however, after Joshua Davis published an article of the MATE competition in April 2005, the story brought the attention of
different medias. Individual readers contribute with money and a group of businessmen from Oregon and Washington decided to
form a foundation, which offered college scholarships for Allan and Fredis robotics class. Since the robotics team counted with this
money, they were now able to go to college. Cristian went to Arizona State University, Lorenzo enrolled at Phoenix Colleges
Culinary Studies program, Luis attended the Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and Oscar enrolled at Arizona State University in
mechanical engineering. Additionally, Luis and Lorenzo formed a company in Mexican-fusion dining called Neither Here, Nor
There, while Cristian built a small laboratory in his room. Likewise, Oscar married Karla, a U.S. citizen and created a robotics team
called the ASU RoboDevils at his university.
On November 07 of 2006, the Proposition 300 suggested by Dean Martin, an Arizona senator, was approved. This Proposition,
which prevented illegal immigrants from getting in-state tuition, threatened Cristian and Oscars opportunity to complete their
degrees. Despite the proposition, Oscar was able to collect funds from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU, Chicanos
por la Causa and Luis; to pay his studies at ASU until May 13, 2009, when he graduated. Though he had graduated with honors,
President Obamas speech, which took place during the ceremony, encouraged him to deport himself. On September 1, 2009, Oscar
came back to Mexico, he waited until 3 months later to apply for a waiver petition, but it was denied. Then, oscars supporters
helped spread his story, until it reached to Senator Dick Durbin, who tried to create a bill called the DREAM act, but unfortunately,
it failed. However, his staff talked with the Immigration Services and Oscars application was approved in July 2010. Not only
Oscar got the chance to feel relieved, but also Lorenzo and Cristian were able to apply for protection when President Obama
approved the DREAM Act program. Since he was officially a US citizen, he decided to enlist in the Army and go to the Paktia
Province of eastern Afghanistan. By 2014, Lorenzo was a line cook at St. Francis, Oscar had finished his duty in the Army and
started a job at a train company. Additionally, Luis worked by emptying trash cans at a federal courthouse while Cristian continued
inventing things at home. Fredi stayed at Carl Hayden and Allan retired since 2006. Finally, in 2013 Hollywood decided to film
their triumph at the 2004 MATE competition.

a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for you.

While reading this chapter I found a couple things that captivated my attention. At the beginning, I felt sad about the
robotics team situation, since they didnt count with the citizenship or even money, it was a shame to see that their
amazing talent will be wasted. Nonetheless, many people tried to help and contribute to their cause. Despite that I
thought that it was a blessing to count with a scholarship, I realized they still had a bigger problem; their legal status. I
cannot imagine how they felt, it was unfair to live with the fear of being deported and banned from the only country
they knew, but most of all the fact that they couldnt work and study as many others. Also, it wasnt actually their fault
to be illegal immigrants, it was a consequence of their parents decision. Then I wondered why they couldnt be judged
by their story and conditions, instead of just being treated as one more illegal immigrant. Later, I was worried if Oscars
citizen petition would be approved. Now that he had a bigger responsibility of protecting and working for a wife and a
daughter, therefore, he had a stronger reason to be in America aside of his dream to enlist in the Army. However, it was
a joy to see that his petition was approved at the end. Finally, even though some of them did not accomplish their goals,
they still were an inspiration for many people, including myself.

2 discussion questions. These should be openended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not fact based yes or
no questions.

Why did Oscar think he would attract thieves and gangsters attention for looking American? Was he judging
before knowing them?

Why didnt Luis apply for a better job if he had a green card?

This time, I started my reading at night, I read 20 pages and decided to continue the rest on the next day. While I was reading I
highlighted main ideas with a pink highlighter and circled all the words I did not know. Even though there was a part between the last
pages that I couldnt understand, after I read it the second time I managed to comprehend it. I was distracted by my phone a couple
times, but then I decided to put it away. Furthermore, the time went slowly because the chapter had many pages to read. Since I had
to be aware of many details, it was hard to think how to put all of them in the summary, however, I decided to only pay attention to
the ideas I highlighted before.
