Printed in TURKEY SPEED UP VOCABULARY (TO THE TEACHERS) Vocabulary development is considered (in NA theory) more important than the acqui- sition of morphosyntax. Tt is suggested that lexical items carry more meaning than grammar structures, that one can survive with a dictionary in the target language community but not with a grammar book. Comprehensibility is viewed as directly dependent on the ability to rec- ognize the meaning of key words in a sentence. Therefore, vacebulary development-especially at the beginning level where grammar knowledge is little- plays a crucial role in comprehen- sion thus acquisition SU Vocabulary constitutes the initial part of the SU Coursebooks. It has been designed to build up the basic vocabulary related to 25 areas of life. After every 5 units there follows @ consolidation unit in which the previously covered key words aré reviewed. Three hundred and seventy-five pictures accompany the teaching of key words in an audio-visual way. ‘The 25 units have been selected and ordered in accordance with the here-and-now talk principle of the Natural Approach Theory. That is, the most concrete and immediate environ- ment words constitute the former units; the less common ones, the latter units. The key words in each unit are represented with a picture in which only the key word is colored for better recognition. For example, if the key word is teacher and if the teacher is in front of the class, only the teacher is colored not the class. Also every key word is contextualised in two sen- tences describing the pictures. The isolated words as well as these sentences are recorded on tape so that students will be exposed to @ maximum amount of input. Pictures are associated with words and sentences to achieve maximum comprehensibility HOW TO COVER A VOCABULARY UNIT Each unit consists of 15 key words listed on the upper half of every page. First, the teacher makes the students listen to the isolated words repeated twice on the tape. Students follow the pictures while listening. The teacher may rewind the tape and make them listen again until the students get ready to do the ‘scrambled words’ exercise. While listening to the scrambled words, students write down each word after it is pronounced on the tape. (Scrambled words are read more slowly so that there will be enough time to write.) Students are advised to initiate the spelling given in the key word list. This way, they will get better acquainted with the orthography of English. The main responsibility of the teacher is to make sure that all got the words right Having finished the word-level exercises, students listen to the first set of sentences about the pictures. Each sentence exemplifies one key word indicated by the colored item in every picture. Students try to guess the meaning of the sentences using their previous know!- edge of key words plus the visual cues. They may not (and possibly do not) know every structure ot word in given sentences, according to NA Theory they don’t have to. It is enough for them to have a rough idea of what these words and structures may mean using extralinguis- tic and linguistic cues. Sentences are presented to them for the purpose of giving roughly tuned input which may include i-+1 structures. When a sentence is particularly hard for them to understand then the teacher might explain that sentence translating the unknown words which block comprehension. If a sentence cannot be understood it won't trigger LAD. In- comprehensible input is simply noise. The teacher may rewind the tape and make them relisten before they get ready to handle the serambled-sentence exercise. While listening to the sentences in mixed order, stu- dents are supposed to number in the first box below the pictures. ‘The teacher makes them re- listen until the majority of the students finish the exercise. At the end, the teacher asks the students what the proper ordering of the sentences is. When there is 2 mistake in the ordering made by the students, the teacher may turn on the tape again (which means even more input). If there is not sufficient time for this the teacher may give the answer himself. After fepeating the same procedure for the second set of sentences, the teacher may provide his own input by forming different sentences for the pictures. ‘The sentences he forms do not have to include the key words but must be comprehensible enough for his students. He may ask his students which of his sentences is related to which picture, a kind of scrambled exercise, Making new and comprehensible sentences might be difficult during the initial units but towards the final units when their lexical (and grammatical) knowledge has increased, it willbe easier. (In fact, the most problematic phase in SLA is the initial stage in which very little input is comprehensible.) An additional activity, if time allows, is a word-game, First the teacher tries to pan- tomime one of the key words in front of the class without uttering anything orally. Students ‘make guesses and the first one who can find the relevant word will be entitled to pantomime another word instead of the teacher. ‘The same procedure goes on until-each key word is used. ‘Then they may pantomime those words in the sentences which are not the target of the unit or in later units they may use the key words from previous units. That is, as they move along new units, the number of units they can use in this game will inerease, enhancing the complex- ity, thus, enjoyment of the activity. ‘SU Vocabulary is but one part of a broader enterprise of expanding students’ lexical knowledge through exposure to meaningful audio-visual input, a feature which makes SU unique among many other coursebooks.
