Chlamydia
The most widespread
sexually transmited
disease in the U.S.
What is chlamydia?
-Chlamydia is an infection caused by
bacteria and the most common STI in
the U.S.
-It is passed through sexual contact,
sharing sex toys, from mother to
newborn during vaginal birth, and
possibly through transferred on fingers
from the genitals.
-Commonly infected people are men
and women under twenty-five years
old.
-The penis, vagina, cervix, anus,
urethra, and throat can be infected by
chlamydia.
-When infected, most do not show
symptoms and is easily passed to
other partners with unprotected sexual
activities.
Statistics
-More than 90 million cases of
chlamydia are reported each year.
-About 70-95% women and about 90%
of men do not notice the symptoms of
chlamydia.
-When being treated for chlamydia
most patients receive treatment for
gonorrhea because 50% patients have
a combination of the two diseases.
Testing
Symptoms in Women
-Frequent pain while urinating
-Heavy periods or bleeding between
periods
-Unusual or abnormal vaginal
discharge (smelly and yellowish)
-Swelled skin around the vagina or
anus
-Painful sex or bleeding after sex
Symptoms in Men
-Pain while urinating
-Discharge from the penis
(white/cloudy, watery)
-Swollen skin around the anus
-Testicular swelling
