What is chlamydia?
-Chlamydia is an infection caused by
bacteria and the most common STI in
the U.S.
-It is passed through sexual contact,
sharing sex toys, from mother to
newborn during vaginal birth, and
possibly through transferred on fingers
from the genitals.
-Commonly infected people are men
and women under twenty-five years
old.
-The penis, vagina, cervix, anus,
urethra, and throat can be infected by
chlamydia.
-When infected, most do not show
symptoms and is easily passed to
other partners with unprotected sexual
activities.

Statistics
-More than 90 million cases of
chlamydia are reported each year.
-About 70-95% women and about 90%
of men do not notice the symptoms of
chlamydia.
-When being treated for chlamydia
most patients receive treatment for
gonorrhea because 50% patients have
a combination of the two diseases.

Signs & Symptoms

Testing

-Known as the silent disease

because when people become
infected they show very little to no
symptoms.

-Chlamydia is easily curable, but

you need to get tested sooner
rather than later.

-Even though some people do not

show symptoms, others may begin
to show symptoms between five
and ten days after being infected.

-Urine and swab tests of the

penis, cervix, urethra, or anus are
the two ways to detect if a person
is in infected with chlamydia.

-The symptoms of chlamydia are

very similar to gonorrhea.

Symptoms in Women
-Frequent pain while urinating
-Heavy periods or bleeding between
periods
-Unusual or abnormal vaginal
discharge (smelly and yellowish)
-Swelled skin around the vagina or
anus
-Painful sex or bleeding after sex

Symptoms in Men
-Pain while urinating
-Discharge from the penis
(white/cloudy, watery)
-Swollen skin around the anus
-Testicular swelling

-The swab test for women and

men causes discomfort and a
burning feeling, but it is the most
reliable test out of the two.
Treatments
-After having a positive test result for
chlamydia you can start treatment
right away.
-The treatment for chlamydia is an
antibiotic.
-Some cases of chlamydia can be
treated in one dose or seven days.
-Your partner must be treated also
before you have sex again so the
infection wont return.
-You may want to be retested in
about three to four months after
youve been treated the first time.
