Substance abuse and its effect on self-satisfaction
Botvin, GJ. "Preventing Drug Abuse in Schools: Social and Competence Enhancement
Approaches Targeting Individual-Level Etiologic Factors." Addictive Behaviors. 25.6
(2000). Print.
The problem with drug abuse in schools is that for many kids are peer pressured. There
is a huge feeling and need for everyone to fit in and sometimes kids are willing to do anything.
The use of substances can lead to many unhealthy habits and can hurt your bodys health
permanently. The prevention of drug abuse in schools is difficult because they are educated
multiple times on substance abuse but still choose to do so. Keeping an eye on kids and a safe
watch on their behavioral actions such as attitudes or drastic changes in mood, etc.
This is relevant because it helps let us know what to prevent and how to help the
situations if anyone were to encounter one. It helps to know the prevention strategies and could
potentially save a life. These kids do not know much about what they are doing and how it can
truly hurt their bodies.
This source is credible because it follows all of the requirements. I could easily access all
of the information I needed to know if it was credible or not. The article was found in the UNC
Charlotte database also.

Botvin, Gilbert J. Prevention of Adolescent Substance Abuse through the Development of

Personal and Social Competence. Preventing Adolscent Drug Abuse: Intervention
Strategies, 47. DHHS Publication, 1985. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.
It is noticed that adolescence believe that they will not create a problem once they start
using the so called substance whether it is smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, or even a harder
drug such as heroin. Even though kids, at such a young age, are warned about the effects and
addictiveness of the substances, still do not quite comprehend the severity of just trying a
substance once.
This is relevant to the inquiry question because kids who fall under peer-pressure and
social influence become victim to addiction. The social influence is a huge factor and majority of
the time causes kids to do things they wouldnt necessarily do. When people become followers
it is said that they have a self-confidence or esteem issue; so this might be a sign of these issues
and be an early sign that the adolescent needs help or more social support.
This source is credible because it passes the CRAAP Test. It relates to my topic of
interest, the author has a PH.D. and is qualified in the field of the topic, the article is owned by
the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the information has no bias. The only thing is the date
but I thought no matter the year, the information on this is still relevant people might have just
gone in further detail in more current times but all the articles Ive read that are similar say the
same concept, this is just more reliable.
Brown, RT. "Risk Factors for Substance Abuse in Adolescents." Pediatric Clinics of North
America. 49.2 (2002): 247-55. Print

Behavior is a big sign that people can be watching out for in adolescents for the before
and after effects of drugs. This article talks about what a risk behavior is, why it is present in
adolescents, and ways it can be prevented. Adolescents have growing bodies and put themselves
at risk when taking these drugs. Their minds are not fully developed. This article is not saying it
is okay for adults to take drugs but adolescents could put their mental and physical growth in
jeopardy.
This is relevant to my inquiry question because this talks about why adolescents do
rebellious things like taking drugs and breaking rules. It gives a lot of insight and reason. It talks
about behavior and not just prevention and giving people something else to look for.
This article was found on the UNC Charlotte database and all of the information was
easily accessed. It passed the CRAAP Test and everything was up to date.
Richter, SS, SA Brown, and MA Mott. "The Impact of Social Support and Self-Esteem on
Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcome." Journal of Substance Abuse. 3.4
(1991): 371-85. Print.
Substance abuse has been something that kids result to as a coping mechanism. Many
adolescents that begin to abuse substances have reported having low self-satisfaction or selfesteem. The social support system for an adolescent struggling against these problems has a
major effect. There are two major influences for adolescents abusing substances: falling into peer
pressure having a troublesome home life.
This is relevant to inquiry question because it has a study to show the more so reason
why adolescents begin to abuse drugs and why the social support system in their lives matters so
much. Having low self-esteem can bring someone down so much to where they feel like they
have absolutely no one and this is when kids start to get desperate for change.

The source is credible because it was not only found in the UNC Charlotte database
system but also has all of the requirements from the CRAAP Test that we had taken earlier this
week. The level of the authors expertise, authors point of view, and the publication date were
all present also.

Substance Use & Misuses 43.12/13 (2008): 1802-1828. SPORTDiscus with Full Text.
Web. 8 Apr. 2016.
This article talks about the major effects of adolescent substance abuse, such as mortality.
Adult substance abuse is compared to adolescent substance abuse and the little difference.
Prevention methods along with also treatment methods are stated and in full access to anyone in
need. This article just went into a little deeper of information on the higher risks and the statistics
of how many kids and adults it effects.
This article is relevant to my inquiry question because anyone abusing substances are at
risk at any point in their life during these times. Whether it is a risk of developing cancer from
tobacco or mortality from other substances, each is severe and can have an effect on the rest of a
life if it were to happen. People abusing the substances are not the only ones affected, it affects
the families and friends of that individual and create risk for them also.
All the information for the source was accessible very easily. It was laid out in labeled
boxes for the specific information. The text has no bias and is very informational. When the
name of the authors were clicked on, you were brought to more articles they have written. The
article was also found in the UNC Charlotte database.
