Artifact Reflection
Artifact Reflection for : Meteorite
Class : Chemistry I Honors
Teacher Name: Mrs. London
Date : 19 March 2014
Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
What are you learning..
1. This artifact is connected to what you are learning is your class.
a. What topic of study does this artifact represent?
This artifact represents the study of valence electrons and electron configuration.
b. What was the assignment?
The assignment was to use the given charts of data collected to determine the identity of the
unknown elements in the meteorite.
c. List the steps you completed to create this artifact.
1. I completed CHART A by filling in the appropriate electron configuration and predicted
number of valence electrons for each of the nine unknown elements.
2. I completed CHART B by organizing the meteorite samples in order of increasing atomic
number.
3. I completed CHART C by predicting the values for the approximate atomic radius,
electronegativity, ionization energy, metallic character, and number of valence electrons for the
missing elements (X, Y, and Z).
4. I then explained how I determined my prediction in Chart B.
5. I lastly explained the trends in atomic radius across a period and the trend in atomic
radius down a group.
Why are you learning it
2. This artifact is connected to content standards and school-wide expectations.
a. List the content standards/GSEs this artifact addresses.
DOK 3 - Critical Thinking
DOK 3 - Problem solving
DOK 2 - Communication
b. List the school-wide academic expectation(s) this artifact addresses
PS1(9-11)-3 Students demonstrate an understanding of characteristic properties of matter by
identifying and explaining the basis for the arangement of the elements within the periodic table
and predicting the relative physical and chemical properties of an element based on its location
within the periodic table.
PS1(9-11)-4 Students demonstrate an understanding of the structure of matter by comparing
the three subatomic particles of atoms and their location within the atom, the relative mass and
their charge.
M(F&A)-10-1: Identifies and extends to specific cases a variety of patterns and functions
represented in models, tables, sequences, graphs, or in problem solving situations.
