Mr. Kiley- 6th Grade Tech/Eng. 2013-2014
Exam date ________4/9/14_______________________ Exam period ___________________
The exam will come from handouts, Power Point presentations, notes, home works,
and class activities.
Vocabulary:
Engineering- (3 Handouts and notes)
The use of science and technology to solve problems.
Applying the design process to solve the worlds problems, and needs or
wants
Science- (3 Handouts and notes)
Exploring the natural world.
For example we studied earth and space this year.

Three main fields of science: (Power Point notes)

1- Biology- the study of life
2- Physical Science- chemistry ( matter and its changes); Physicsmotion and forces
3- Earth and Space Science- earth, sun, solar system, galaxy and
universe

Technology- (6 handouts and power Point notes)

Products and/or processes that make peoples lives easier

Engineers (include a field of engineering)- (handout and notes)

Solve societys problems using knowledge of science and the design
process

What is the relationship between science, technology, and engineering? (2

handouts)
All three are connected like a circle: see handout p.81 (Curriculum
Frameworks)
Lists the steps of the engineering design process and provide an example from the
class. (8 papers and notes)
1. Identify the problem, need, or want.
Can you draw it?
*

Flow chart from handout

What needs to be solved?
* Circle chart from handout

2. Research the problem:

What else has been done by others? What ideas worked and failed? Why?

3. Brainstorm:
All ideas welcome to solve problem
All possible solutions should be written down (no criticism)
The more ideas the better

4. Design
Pick a solution from your brainstorming that solves as many problems as
possible
What can you realistically do given time and resources?

5. Prototype:
Build, sketch, draw, label, small model of the final design.
equal success?

Does design

Can show how problems are solved and reveal other challenges before
final build

6. Feedback:
Could you improve your solution or modify your design. Share solutions
and listen for possible changes

7. Test and evaluate:

Does the design solve the problem(s)? How do you know?
Will the design work for the full scale (larger) problem to be solved?

8. Redesign:
Solve the challenges and improve the design based on feedback, tests,
shared solutions, research and brainstorming

9. The cycle continues:

--engineers brainstorm solutions--build and test

solutions--share new ideas and communicate solutions--redesign
Problems are identified

again.
Just about everything can be improved or redesigned- For example, cars
are better every year.
New and improved is a popular advertising slogan

(Students have evidence of applying design steps from Brochure mini-project

design steps in notebook

Materials- items, ingredients, parts, components of the product or process.

What makes the tool, machine, and process, for the design solution?
For example, cotton is the material for a shirt but a process had to be
designed get it from cotton seed to large red T-shirt available at the mall.
iPods are made of glass and metals but how they work is a process that is
designed.
(6 handouts provided and multiple pages of notes from Power Point presentations)

Tools- devices people develop and design to do a specific task. Tools

handout p.80-83
Identify the appropriate tool- hammer for pounding, saw for cutting, pliers
for gripping
Provide two examples of a material and list at least one advantage and at least one
disadvantage of those materials.
1. Examples: Metals conduct heat and electricity but are heavy and
expensive

Plastics are light and durable but have disadvantages

like environmental
Wood has advantages and disadvantages as a
material
Water is very powerful yet a precious natural
resource
Oil is a material used around the world but has
consequences for uses
2.

The processes of social media, like Facetime, can be

positive or negative

Axis of a graphHorizontal and vertical lines that show the label and scale of the data.

and Y that are used to find location and information (technical data) from
a graph
Read or interpret data from graphs to answer technical questions. For example,
using any of the graphs we examined in class, can you determine material
advantages and disadvantages? See below.
What are the axes?
Name an expensive
material.
Identify a good conductor.
What is a better
conductor:
a) Glass or brass
b) Wood or gold
What is better insulator:
a) Glass or ceramics
b) Rubber or copper
If engineers need a cheap
conductor, what would
you recommend and why?

activities. In notebook
