Focus Area

Music
The Future
Creating a soundtrack based on an
animation
Links to futuristic sounds

Learning Intentions
Students will learn about regular and
alternative sounds and how they can
be used to portray certain emotions,
and how music techniques such as
crescendos and diminuendos can be
used to alter and enhance moods.
This learning will then be used to
create a music sequence for their pre
made animations on the future.

AusVels

Experiment with elements of music,

in isolation and in combination,
using listening skills, voice,
instruments and technologies to
find ways to create and manipulate
effects
Develop music ideas through
improvisation, composition and
performance, combining and
manipulating the elements of music
Structure compositions by
combining and manipulating the
elements of music and using
notation
Identify and connect specific
features and purposes of music
from contemporary and past times
to explore viewpoints and enrich
their music making

Location / Setting

Music room experimenting with

instruments and sound
combinations.
IT room constructing the midi files
on the music software.

Organisation / Student Groups

Special Considerations

The groups have already been placed

dependant on those previously chosen
in the Visual Arts class. Group sizes
between 3 and 4.

As this lesson is designed for year 7-8, this

will most likely be the first time they have
experienced the music software.
Moderations and extra explanation and
scaffolding will be required in order for
students to understand what is required of
them and how they can complete their work
in a satisfactory manner.

Students will begin as a whole class to

be introduced to the topic and
experiment with music before they will
go off into their own groups and create
their music soundtrack.
This lesson is designed to go over 7
10 periods. This is mainly to account
for the amount of time needed to
create a music soundtrack, and is also
dependant on the time duration of the
animations.

Assessment Criteria: Assessment OF
Learning

The lesson will begin by introducing the

concept of music formation and creation
by introducing the key words and how
musicians use these to create mood and
intrigue in their music.
Investigate into movie scenes, and study
the background music.
Discuss;
Tempo
Musicality/ crescendos and
diminuendos
Mood
Volume
Harmony
Clashes
How do these things work together to
create mood and emotions into the
scene?

Watch the scene again without any

music and discuss the differences.
Has the mood changed?
Are your emotions as strong without
the music?

The main part of the lesson will be

creating the music soundtrack.
An introduction will be needed into the
music software. I will create a short
music sequence that the students can
follow on their own programs and
discuss how to create a midi file and
how to place instruments into the track
and delete them out of it. Saving the
file and how to retrieve it again will
also be included.

Once the students have completed their

music soundtracks for their designated
animations they will be shown to the class.
Students will be able to discuss with the
class;
Why they chose certain sounds
Why they are placed where they are
How it influences mood
Musicality
How they feel about the final outcome
There will be a whole class discussion on
animations and the knowledge that has
been attained throughout the course of the
lessons.

A recap over the introduction section

will be needed to reiterate musical
terms and the musicality of
instruments that need to be considered
when choosing what to include in their The final products will then be displayed on

nights.

This section is designed to be

continued over several lessons.

Lesson Plan Template

What type of music would you put in

this situation?

By allowing students to understand both

the language of these words and how
they are used to enhance movie scenes,
it will help them to draw connections
when thinking about their own
animations
Student will then be required to interact
with musical instruments to discover
their sounds and understand their
musical capabilities and how they can
be used to create the things previously
spoken about.
The students will finally form their groups
and discuss together what sounds and
mood they want to achieve in certain
points in their animation and how they
can achieve it with their knowledge of
instruments.

Assessment FOR learning:

Assessment AS learning:

Assessment OF learning:

This assessment will be ongoing by

monitoring the students progress on
their music soundtrack.

The final soundtrack will then be graded

based on all of the learning goals, discussion
and guiding questions expressed in the
lesson plan and how well the music
interweaves with the animation and what is
occurring in it.

Students will create their own goals

that discuss;
The direction they need to go
with their work
What areas need improving
Timeline
Questions and curiosities about
the work
How they feel their music
journey is developing
By doing this it will allow for students
to personally discuss how they feel
they are progressing which can then be
kept and used for assessment later on
and compared to their final outcome.

This assessment will be based on

observations into how the students are
interacting with the musical terms and if
they are using the language effectively
throughout the lessons.
Retrieving personal anecdotes about the
sounds and the instruments will also
supply evidence for this ongoing

assessment.
Guiding questions
What sounds does this instrument
make?
What instruments will create
harmonies and which ones will
clash?
What will create dissonance?
What will make a joyful sound?
How can the influence moods?
