Lesson 6

Students will participate in an activity using Google Earth to see the

difference between continents, countries, and cities. After this, there will
be a KWL chart and students will say what they know about research and
what they know about travel. Then, after looking through different
nonfiction texts the students will create questions that they may have
about a particular country or a countrys specific event.
We will teach them about text features and what main ideas and
supportive ideas are through a read and think aloud. The students will
participate in a scavenger hunt to find the text features in the nonfiction
texts that will be used during the research.

Students will be working on identifying the main idea and gathering

evidence to prove the main idea. Students will participate in a think aloud
then practice on their own. Groups will decide on the topic that they will
focus on for their research and begin researching their topic. Students will
be expected to begin citing their sources.

Students will begin to explore the difference between fact and opinions in
nonfiction text. Teachers will lead the class through a mini lesson.
Students will locate opinions and facts in their own research. Students
will create their own questions that they want to know prior to the
interview tomorrow that will provide them with factual information.
