Spousal Notification Law

By: Stephanie I

The moment a baby is conceived

his life depends on his mothers choice to
either have him, or simply have an abortion.
Unfortunately as Brian Fisher (2013) states
in his article Roe v. Wade, effectively
stripped the father of all legal rights
regarding his unborn child (p.6). This
completely denied the opportunity for men
to decide if they wanted to become parents.
Not only are mothers losing their child, but
are also taking away the opportunity from
their partner to become a father. This is why
the law should be changed to allow men to
have a say about their childs life.

When a
woman finds
out she is
pregnant and
decides to keep
the child, the
father has to
pay child
support even if
he did not want to have the child. In contrary
if the father wants the woman to have the
child his choice can simply be ignored and
he has to bear with the pain of losing his
baby.
At this moment the law is unfair for
the
fathers
since it
took
away
their right
of
parenthood. When the law was first passed

many men were grateful for it, since they

were able to have sex without the
responsibility of raising a child. It was
almost liberating since the choice was all in
the hands of the woman. As the years have
passed men have come to realize this is a
law that affects them greatly. Fisher (2013)
has described how men are greatly affected
by abortions since men are born to provide
for the weakest among them, and that most
certainly includes their unborn children
(p.24.).
Laws are starting to be written that
are denying abortions to women without the
signed consent of the father. Unfortunately
not many states have been able to pass them.
Missouri state representative Rick Brattin
had the idea of creating a law that would
need the signature of the father after he
needed the signature of his wife to get a
vasectomy. It seems unjust that the United
States speaks about equality for men and
women but fails to give fathers their right to
protect their unborn child.

Men should be able to decide if they

want to have the child. They could pay for
the womans medical expenses until the
baby is born and then take full custody in
case the mother does not want to be a part of
the childs life. This alternative would give
men the opportunity to fight for the life of
their child.

Men nor women should feel they

have to become parents when they do not
want to, but they should each have equal say
about what they would like. It is important
to bring attention to this issue since the law
must be altered to help both men and
women. A childs life is not a joke and
should not be a decision only one of the
parents takes since it will affect both of them
for the rest of their lives.
