Section IV: Assessment Tools

The pre and posttests align with the goals and objectives of this unit by offering a
clear understanding of where individual students stand in relation to the mastery of the
concept of parallel structure. While some students may find the pretest easy, I believe the
majority will find it to be moderately difficult; further, I expect none will get a 100
percent on the test as there are a couple of questions that require a more grammatically
complex understanding of the concept than merely what sounds right. The posttest
ought to prove a dramatic increase in understanding for those students who found the
pretest to be moderately difficult as well as proving to those who found it fairly easy that
they have a more thorough understanding of the material.
Other assessment tools will include worksheets; packets; formative check-ins with
students as they verbally respond to questions individually, in small groups, and in large
groups; and writing and peer-reviewing their own original works. Not only will these
assessments give me a constant understanding of their development and comprehension
of the units content, but it ought to work to show them how they are improving as well.
If the formative assessments along the way fail to demonstrate students understanding of
the content to themselves, then the summative posttest at the end ought to without issue.
