Nursing process- Competency B

Identify competency number,

letter and subcategory.

Describe one significant

learning experience in this
course related to the CLPNA
competency. Provide an
example.

Describe what you learned and

how it relates to the
competency. Explain why it was
meaningful.

3-1- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply critical thinking and

critical inquiry throughout planning of care.
In NFDN 1002, I have learn how to critically think through the
process of care planning. One significant learning experience in this
course related to the CLPNA competency that required critical
thinking through planning care is medication administration through
the ten rights. It is important a nurse perform the five right before
administering medication and the other five rights at the bedside to
insure that the correct medication process to prevent medication error.
during lab practice, I insure that all my five rights are made before I
got to my client bedside, this planning insure that Im knowledgeable
about the type of medication Im administering to my clients and also
provide me a foundation about that medication. Thus when I enter the
client room Im able to educate my client why we are administering
that medication if they choose to refuse the medication. . For example
during one of my lab practice I was administering morphine PRN
every 3-4 hours for my client pain, I asked him if it was alright for me
to administer morphine on his deltoid (right arm) and he refused. As
a nurse, I had to critically think of a way to show him why I am
giving this medication and what will happen after giving him it to
him. I had to plan in a short period of time, how I will educate on the
importance of the medication.
I first assessed his reason to refuse and asked him to rate his pain
on a scale of one to ten and flowing that assessment , I educated him
about the importance of minimizing his pain on time and the effect if
not administer one time. And I also informed him that anytime preadministering morphine, he feel uncomfortable, he has the right to
refuse.
I learn that performing the ten rights ensure client safety and less
medication error. When administering medication to client, It is
importunate to compare with the MARs at least three time and
during that three checks you perform the 5 rights (right client, right
time, right dose, right route and right reason) with this planning of
care, you become more knowable about the medication you are
administering thus when you inter the client room, the remaining five
rights become much easier because you already know about the
medication and why you are providing it.
When facing client who refuse their medication, I am able to

education my client why I am administering the medication and what

will happen if not administer on time.
This is related to the competency because the ten it provide me the
necessary critical technique I will need when I face with a client who
refuse their medication.
This experience became a meaning experience because it was at that
moment I learn the importance of critical thinking when it comes to a
situation that one does did not expect to happen, it is important to
create a plan that will benefit the client needs. Therefore, it is
important to keep ten rights to insure a safe medication
administration.

Uses the Proficiency

Categories to rate their
proficiency in the chosen
CLPNA competency. Explain
what was done to achieve the
competency.

Proficiency Categories: excellent

Base on this nursing proficiency category, I learn the importance to
critically think and planning in intervention. I was able to apply my
previous lab practice and theory class on the importance of the 10
right when administering any medication so that they is no
medication error when Im administering medication to my clients . I
have a done all my reading thus I can apply this competency into y
everyday life when administering medication.

Describe how you will apply

this learning in your current
and future nursing practice.

A will apply this learning in the future and current nursing practices
because it will provide me with alternative to a solution when Im
faced with a client that refuse to take their medication. My critical
thinking skill will be apply to the future because will minimum my
medication administration error.
