Thiscoursereviewsthebasicsofsmartantennatechnology,whichhasemerged
in the last 30 years or so as a means to improve the quality of wireless
communication and direction finding systems. The course will first focus on
traditional smart antenna techniques for improving signal quality, reducing
interference and improving the reliability of wireless links. Then it will address
somemorerecenttechniquesthattargettheimprovementofthethroughputof
communication links. Finally some applications and examples of techniques
adoptedbywirelessstandardswillbementioned.
The course's main objective is to give to practitioners a basic understanding of
smart antenna systems, allowing them to later work on them for their
implementationinpracticalwirelesssystemsandunderstandtheirroleinvarious
wirelessstandards.
Thecourseisaddressedtowirelesscommunicationengineers,whoareinterested

aresuitedtopracticalsystems.
The basics of digital communication should be known (modulation, linear
channels, detection), as well as some basics of signal processing (linear and
adaptive filtering) and wireless communications (fading, diversity, multiple
access).
