EPOXY

Chemistry
Low molecular weight pre-polymer or higher molecular weight with
normally contain at least two epoxide group.
The epoxide group is also sometime referred to as a glycidyl or
oxirane group.
A wide range of epoxy resin is produce industrially.
The raw material for epoxy resin for today largely petroleum
derived.
Some plant derived sources are now becoming commercially
available.
Example : plant derived glycerol used to make epichlorohydrin.
Are polymeric or semi-polymeric material
Rarely exist as pure substances since variable chain length result
from the polymerization reaction used to produced for certain
application
Example : using a distillation purification process
Disadvantage of high purity liquid grade-their tendency to form
crystalline solid due to their highly regular structure, which require
melting to enable processing
Important characteristic-the epoxide content
Commonly expressed as epoxyde number, which is the number of
epoxide equivalent in 1kg of resin (Eq/kg)
or equivalent weight, which is the weight in gram of resin containing
1 mole equivalent of epoxide (g/mol)
one measure may be simply converted to another :
equivalent weight (g/mol)=1000/epoxide number (Eq/kg)
-use to calculate the amount of co-reactant(hardner) required when
curing epoxy resin
