COLGATE:
Introduction and History
The company's parent has a presence in over 200 countries worldwide. In
India, Colgate ranks No.1 in top of the mind recall in many consumer surveys.
Let's take a look at the company's journey over the years and what's in for it in the
future. Colgate is considerably backward integrated. It has captive manufacturing
facilities for flavor and other ingredients, which yield significant cost savings. It
has also set up a world-class facility for manufacture of Di-calcium Phosphate, a
key ingredient in toothpaste.

History:
Egyptians are believed to have started using a paste to clean their teeth
around 5000BC, before toothbrushes were invented. Ancient Greeks and Romans
are known to have used toothpastes, and people in China and India first used
toothpaste around 500BC.
Ancient toothpastes were used to treat some of the same concerns that we
have today keeping teeth and gums clean, whitening teeth and freshening breath.
The ingredients of ancient toothpastes were however very different and varied.
Ingredients used included a powder of ox hooves' ashes and burnt eggshells that
was combined with pumice. The Greeks and Romans favored more abrasiveness
and their toothpaste ingredients included crushed bones and oyster shells. The
Romans added more flavoring to help with bad breath, as well as powdered
charcoal and bark. The Chinese used a wide variety of substances in toothpastes
over time that has included ginseng, herbal mints and salt.

The development of toothpastes in more modern times started in the 1800s.

Early versions contained soap and in the 1850s chalk was included. Betel nut was
included in toothpaste in England in the 1800s, and in the 1860s a home
encyclopedia described home-made toothpaste that used ground charcoal.
Prior to the 1850s, 'toothpastes' were usually powders. During the 1850s,
new toothpaste in a jar called a Crme Dentifrice was developed and in 1873
Colgate started the mass production of toothpaste in jars. Colgate introduced its
toothpaste in a tube similar to modern-day toothpaste tubes in the 1890s.
Until after 1945, toothpastes contained soap. After that time, soap was replaced by
other ingredients to make the paste into a smooth paste or emulsion - such as
sodium lauryl sulphate, a common ingredient in present-day toothpaste.
In the second half of the twentieth century modern toothpastes were
developed to help prevent or treat specific diseases and conditions such as tooth
sensitivity. Fluoride toothpastes to help prevent decay were introduced in 1914.
Toothpastes with very low abrasiveness were also developed and helped prevent
the problems caused by overzealous brushing.
The most recent advances in toothpastes have included the development of
whitening toothpastes, and toothpaste containing Triclosan which provides extra
protection against caries, gum disease, plaque, calculus and bad breath.
Toothpastes today typically contain fluoride, coloring, flavoring, sweetener,
as well as ingredients that make the toothpaste a smooth paste, foam and stay
moist. Individual toothpastes also may contain special ingredients, such as
triclosan in Colgate Total. Toothpaste in tubes is used throughout the world and has
been a very successful invention.

RECOMMENDATION

Colgate is the big brand and market share of Colgate is more as compared to
Pepsodent. We think Colgate spend more money on promotion, advertisement. And
therefore price of Colgate hence increased. Hence we recommended Colgate that
Colgate has to reduce promotion expenditure.

Pepsodent is a brand but market share of pepsodent very less than Colgate.
Pepsodent has to introduce new variety in product and they have to introduce
different quantities of product. Pepsodent has to increase their promotion strategy.
They have to target rural consumers and have to promote product accordingly.

CONCLUSION

During survey we observed that is most of people gave more preference to

the Colgate not to Pepsodent because of you known Colgate is the best toothpaste
in India other than any other. But we not saying that other is not good it also well
but not as per Colgate. And people mostly used toothpaste not powder. Because of
you known college student, Business man and todays young generation they
mostly using toothpaste not powder. Colgate is also available in every local market
but as per our survey most of people buy their Colgate in a shop and less in a
medical store. And also most of people using plain Colgate in a white colour.
Pepsodent also using in a white colour. And we also observed that is mostly in our
family we used same toothpaste because during survey 70% of people using same
toothpaste few are other.
Most of People buying Colgate and also Pepsodent because of its good
qualities and also it available in variety like salt, Neem, Gel and plain. We also
observed that is most of people purchase toothpaste two in a month as per their
family member. Colgate & Pepsodent gave 24 hours freshness to us. And some

Shahruk Khan. Some people do not want any changes in Colgate & some want
changes in Colgate. Most of people brush teeth in a day at least two times in a
morning and also in a night after having good dinner. We also observed that
Colgate is not giving any dental check up free service which other like Pepsodent
are giving free dental check up service to the their customer. And also most of
people do not take any advice before using any toothpaste because we known poor
family they do not having so much money for eat so they how they can take any
advice. Rich family they take all care like health and so on because of they has lot
of money.
In rural area we known there people mostly buy their product by brand so
here also people come know their product by brand and also quality of product.
During survey most of peoples said that brand is necessary for promotion of any
product. Without brand people how can identify their product in city and also
village. So we identified that is Colgate is the liked of all people. And they ready to
spend other ever price of Colgate would be in a market. Pepsodent also good but
most of people liking Colgate. This survey was good for us because which think
we didnt know it becomes to known due to survey. So we would like to say thanks
to Prof. Vandana Mam to gave us such project. We really enjoyed during survey.
