11 narrative theory

Todorov theory
Todorovs theory normally involves 5 steps.
Equilibrium: This is normally the opening scene of the story. This is
normally a happy start where the characters involved are living
there normal lives. Everything is happening as it should.
Disruption: This is where a problem will involve. This may effect
the normal lives of the characters and disrupt there happiness.
Realization: This is where the characters will realize what the
problem is. They will act on this which will normally result in a
dispute causing a scene.
Restored order: This is when the characters will start to solve the
problem. If successful this will lead to happiness being restored. If
the normal is not restored and happiness does not return then
another equilibrium will accrue again.
The end: The normal has been restored and happiness returns.
Some stuff my be different but is normally better than the
beginning.

Propps theory
Propps theory is that there are stereo typical
characters in film. This is where a character will
be stereotyped then act how people would
expect the to act in the film. Propps has a theory
of how the stereotypical characters will act out
there roll in the movie such as the hero will fight
the villain. The hero will then meet a donor who
will give or teach the hero to defeat the villain.
There are 7 different stereotypes in propps
theory these are the villain, the donor, the
helper, the princess, the false hero, the
dispatcher, the hero.
In propps time he analsyed 100 tales which
allowed him to develop a theory that there are 7
main character types.

Strauss
When
clause created this theory he studied

him presenting the theory that stories and films
made actually reflect the beliefs of cultures.
Levis theory was that all narratives could be
shown as binary opposites. This is seen as in
films constantly such as hero's vs villains this
would come under bad vs good. This is seen in
many.
Levis studied hundreds of books about legends
and myths. This allowed him to see that people
base there every day lives on the binary
opposites. People argue bout what they see as
good and bad but good and bad was only made
from what you learn as a child. He can see that if
you weren't taught good from bad then you
wouldn'tt have a sense of wrong. Most film
productions are based on a story resolving
around good and bad this is the binary theory.

Barthes theory
Barthes believes there are a set of codes.
He believes that text has no beginning or
end. He believes that text is a code that
has no structure. He came up with 5
codes for his narrative theory.

The hermeneutic code (her):

This is the way the story will lie to you
and not tell you the truth but drop hints
along the way so that you create your
own image of the truth without the text
having to state the truth.

The enigma/ proairetic code

(act):
This is the way that the righter will build
up tension in the story. They will try to
make you guess what is going to happen

The semantic code (sem): The semantic

code is where a meaning is created through
what you see. By looking at a object or
someone you have a sense of how they act
and what personality they have. This is
called stereotyping.
The symbolic code (sym): this is like the
semantic code but is broader this refers to
the hole scene. It has a deeper meaning as
it takes everything in to context. The way
someone portrays them self's can give u a
sense of how the act, however there can be
a conflict as people may have different
perceptions of the character.
