InstructionalPlan
15minutes:
DoNow:Studentswillreceiveaclipboardandaworksheet.Differentpicturesofsummerwillbe
postedaroundtheroom.Studentswillhave30secondsoneminuteateachpicturetothinkof12
descriptivewordsforit,andwillthenscootchtothenextpicture.Thisactivityisdesignedto

preparestudentsforwhenwewillgeneratealistofwordsaboutsummer.Studentswillsitdown
andreviewtheirlist,thensharethemostinterestingwordstheycameupwithwiththeirgroup.
Groupswillshare12ofthemostinterestingwordstheyheardwiththeclass.
2530minutes:
Ms.Coleywillintroducethepoem,Knoxville,TennessebyNikkiGiovannibybeginningwith
vocabularyandfindingthecityslocationonamap.
Studentswillfirstlisten,thenfollowalongasMs.Coleyreadsthepoem,"Knoxville,Tennesse,"
twice.Ms.Coleywillleaddiscussionaboutpoempostreading,andbegintotalkaboutwords
usedinthepoemtodescribesummer.
