Thinking Differently
Nowadays, autism discrimination is an argument that people need to discuss. Some
people believe that autistic people are outcasts in our society. However, autistic people are the
same as neurotypicals, who are non-autistic people. In addition to, autistic people are talented
and genius although they cannot communicate clearly. In the modern century, there are more
self-contained classes for autistic students because autistic students need a special program to
develop their abilities. However, autistic students also have opportunities to access the same
education as many other students if they have abilities. This schools policy is an excellent
opportunity for autistic students; however, I think that autistic students should have mainstream
classes with many other non-autistic students so that non-autistic students can help them develop
their abilities and their potentials.
Some people believe that autistic students do not have critical thinking because autistic
students cannot communicate with other people. Conversely, autistic students have abilities in
their critical and visual thinking, which is higher than non-autistic students. According to Kara
Hume, Brain imaging studies and research on visual tasks show that many people with autism
have enhanced mental imagery and superior visual thinking, compared to typically developing
people (Hume). Hume confirms that people who have autism have advances in critical thinking
so that they can work more efficiently than neurotypicals. This point infers that autistic students
can understand incisively different problems that they have to encounter. Because of their talents,

they can learn quickly every lesson that teachers teach in class. Autistic students can expand their
abilities in thinking if schools provide them mainstream classes. Mainstream classes can help
them develop their thinking because they will work and communicate with people in the future.
It is a reason why people should provide them mainstream classes to let them prepare academic
skills for their lives. Besides mainstream classes, autistic students need special classes in order to
help them learn fundamental skills such as cooking, paying money, learning how to use
computers, and taking care of themselves. When people let autistic students study in two types of
these classes, autistic students can reveal their potentials of learning. As a result, autistic students
will gain their knowledge and become better students in peoples eyes. Mainstream class3w and
self-contained classes provide them necessary skills for their future so that they need not only
mainstream classes but also self-contained classes.
Autistic not only can have critical thinking but also can communicate with people.
Although autistic students cannot talk apparently or cannot express their thoughts easily, they can
share their ideas with people when people know how to behave with them correctly. Each autistic
student has different behaviors so that teachers have to understand precisely in order to have
better solutions. According to Charlie Remy and Priscilla Seaman, Successful teachers and
librarians recognize the importance of creating an environment that is conducive to learning,
both physical and emotional (Remy 26). Authors indicate an importance of teaching autistic
students is that teachers have to create an environment for these students in order to let them feel
comfortable so that they can express their thoughts or write down their ideas easily. It is a reason
why teachers or instructors need to be trained carefully so that autistic students can have the best
environment to study. Moreover, mainstream classes can help autistic students work on
communication more than self-contained classes because of doing teamwork together. Non-

Quang 3
autistic students can also learn to communicate with autistic students so that non-autistic students
sympathize with autistic students. Moreover, non-autistic students can recognize that autistic
students are best friends to play. To sum up my point, communication can be hard for autistic
students; however, in mainstream classes, students can increase their communication skills
gradually. The most importance is that teacher and students have to be patient to talk to autistic
students so that autistic students feel comfortable to study in mainstream classes.
Subsequently, compared to neurotypicals, autistic people may have to overcome many
obstacles in life. By making them feel inclusive, you can help to build up their confidence to
become successful people in our society. To demonstrate this point, C. A. Wolski reviews a
movie, Temple Grandin. Temple Grandin [is] a brilliant scientist and engineer who singlehandedly reformed the meatpacking industry by improving both the way cattle are treated and
the means by which the animals are led to slaughter (Wolski). Temple Grandin is an autistic
woman who graduated from Arizona State University and had an incredible innovation in
making animals feel less painful when they are killed. Although she was an autistic person, she
could overcome her challenges to become a scientist. In the beginning, she had felt insecure
about everything she learned; however, her professor had understood her and made her discover
her abilities. Finally, she could earn her degree, which was impossible for autistic people as
people thought. From a matter of that fact, people can observe many achievements that autistic
people can do. Autistic students will be successful people if people guide and treat them correctly
to let them know their abilities. The more people interact with autistic students, the more they
can feel confident and ready to contribute many useful achievements for our society. In our
society, there are still many schools for autistic students to provide them self-contained classes so
that they only learn basic skills in their lives; however, these students should learn in mainstream

Quang 4
schools so that they can be sociable with many other students. In the future, autistic students will
work with groups that require fundamentally academic skills. When people understand how they
feel and what they can do, people can recognize that they are friends that people can rely on.
People have to let them have chances to overcome their challenges so that they will try as much
as they can to become successful people. Their ambitions and success will be examples for the
capability of learning. In the future, with help from communities, they may become successful
people and contribute their knowledge to society.
In society, schools still keep self-contain classes without letting autistic participate with
non-autistic students. For example, LAUSD schools do have a variety of program and service
delivery options to meet individual needs [for autistic students] (LAUSD). Although LAUSD
schools succeeded to create a good program for autistic students. However, self-contain classes
still remain. LAUSD should have more mainstream classes for autistic students to let autistic
students have opportunities for higher education. Autistic students have talents and critical
thinking as non-autistic students. It is a reason why people have to let them have a favorable
environment to expand their knowledge. Teachers, who teach autistic students and non-autistic
students in mainstream classes, should know how to control classes so that students do have
arguments with each other. The first time maybe hard for teachers; however, they will recognize
that autistic students are as good as non-autistic students.
Autism is not a disorder; however, it is a thing that makes our humans different. This
difference does not mean that humans are strange among people; however, it is a chance that
humans can have special talents that other people cannot have. In school, autistic students are the
same as non-autistic students who are eager to go to school. They are intelligent to achieve many
things in their lives so that people should treat them equally like many other non-autistic

Quang 5
students. Perhaps, autistic people look strange sometimes; however, people can recognize that
they can do amazing things. People must have actions to let other people know about abilities
and talents of autistic students so that people should not mistreat them and make them feel safe
in school.
