Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.
For example

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/ can
be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and sound
engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets or
studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

List of all items that need detailing

You can either create your own table or upload this one to Weebly and
complete. Either ay, a table like the one below needs to be used.

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
Equipment: Equipment is Important to a film production because
without it you wouldnt be able to even film as it involves the
camera, mic lighting and props with are very important. I used my
owe camera and equipment
Transport: The transport is important because you need you whole
crew to go where ever you go and it helps when you have heavy
equipment. For my film I just used the bus.
Talent: talent is important because otherwise you would not have
anyone to film or u could have bad talent who cant convey emotion
which could make the scene confusing. I used drama students and
friends in my film.
Materials: materials are important because without thing like
makeup costume and props scenes will not be able to be told
properly. I didnt use any makeup but costumes and props where
used In my film.
Facility hire: having a good facility is important because you are
always going to need a place to film and not everything can be done
outside. I didnt hire any facilitys but Id have borrowed some pace
to film e.g. friends houses.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size of
team; roles)

Importance
Deadlines: deadlines are extremely important because without them
you would never finish filming and the project would take way too
long to finish as you would just spend all your time making sure that
it is perfect. My project had the deadline of a week.
Availability of equipment Availability of personnel: this is another
really important part of a film because you will need the equipment
to be availed a lot so you can use It and you also do not want a
huge crew but not a tiny one at the same time. I used all my owe
equipment and a small cats/crew. Without any of this making a film
would be near impossible and definably would not turn out as good.

Sourcing

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
Production equipment: production equipment is just as important as
the normally equipment because without it you cant really shoot
the film
Post-production equipment facility houses: this is Important because
you always need somewhere to store the equipment you use. My
equipment has been stored at my house. I didn't need a stage.
These are very important though because you dont want anything
getting damaged or destroyed.

Sourcing
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/ can be

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material because that is what the
director films with.
Archive material would be used because is there is not enough
footage or you want to use some older shots you have them on
standby.
Photo-library footage is used when you want to use a picture, these
are normally kept in a photo library. This Is the same thing with a
sound library, Its a place where to can keep all your sound.
The internet can be an important material because It is extremely
useful for research and fact checking (general things like that)
Audio is important because without it you would have a silent film,
and audio these days is very important and can skew the whole film
Without a script the actors would not know what to say, therefore
they would to know how to act.
Interviews are important because you need to get to know who you
are employing/ (if celebrity) it helps with publicity.
Costumes are another important material because without looking
the part the whole film wouldn't fit. You wouldn't be able to make
period correct films or anything with a uniform, all films would have
to be about normally everyday people (which is boring).
Sourcing
Original material is filmed by the director but archive footage for
productions can be found in an archive were everything is ready to

be used.

Locations:

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
The location recces is important, It give very important information
about the location that you are filming in. It tells you about dangers,
travel info, power e.c.t.
The limitations and risks are important to know because if not a
crew member could end up really hurt or killed. This Is why you
need this to make safety procuration, lots of films will have an
ambulance or fire truck on standby just in case.

Sourcing
The sourcing for this would be included in the film budget and you
would most often get them from the local services.

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
Location permissions; this is important because without permission
you could get in trouble for filming somewhere that you werent
allowed to be. my film was all shot on public property
Clearances: this is Important because you need to make sure that
the only people on set are the people allowed and not random
people.
Copyright: this is Important because if you have something that you
werent allowed u could get sued or you need to copy right your
work so no one steals it.
Health and safety; health and safety is important so no crew or
actors get hurt.
Insurance: this is important because it cover accidents or broken
equipment. My equipment that I used where Insured.

Ofcom
bodies:
Press Complaints Commission
(PCC) Advertising Standards

Pan European Game
Information (PEGI)

Importance
Ofcom is important because it looks through all sorts of media
formats and has the job of deciding whether it is suitable enough to
broadcast to the public, they also have the job of dealing with
complaints if people find that something is more offensive than first
thought. Without companies like this most adverts would be
extremely unsuitable to many viewers.

Trade unions:

Producers Alliance for Cinema

and Television (PACT),
National Union of Journalists
(NUJ)
Broadcasting Entertainment
Cinematograph and Theatre

Union (BECTU)
Importance
Pact is important because is it a trade union that protects
Independent film, TV and digital media creators, The company
ensures the best legal, economical environment and regulatory
growth of these media sectors. without this company small
independent media industries could be getting treated unfairly or
being ripped off and not give the same rights as the higher up and
more well-known companies.

Trade
associations:

Entertainment and Leisure

Software Publishers
Association (ELSPA)
British Interactive Media
Association (BIMA)

Importance
BIMA is an interactive media association that supports the growth of
the British digital industry, the company supports independent
digital media creator and provides them with the Information they
need to help them develop their companys in this fast moving
media sector
