The Influence of Mrs. Lucey

I had Mrs. Lucey when I was in her Kindergarten class back in 2000 and 2001. I repeated
her class so I went to Kindergarten twice. I enjoyed her class from what I can remember. Her
class was really the stepping stone into my education. She taught me so many things for instance:
how to count, the seasons, how to tie my shoe, what patterns were, how to make and use a
calendar. She was very helpful in teaching me the beginning stages of my education. She was a
very influential person and teacher for me. She was very affluent in making sure I knew what I
was doing, all the while actually absorbing and retaining the information.
Concetta Lucey is her full name. She teaches at a catholic school called St. John the
Baptist Catholic School. The school is located in Silver Spring, Maryland it is a K-8 school. She
has taught at SJB for 23 years. I know she loves what she does with a passion. Concetta Lucey
got a bachelors degree in Elementary Education and Psychology from the University of
Maryland. She then got a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from Johns Hopkins
University while she was taking a break from teaching. She loves children and thinks they are
fascinating. She believes the job is rewarding and she loves to watch the children grow. Her
favorite class as a college student was, Childrens Literature. She knew she started out with 4th
grade then she went to 1st and loved it. After staying home to raise a family, she decided she

wanted to return teaching. She had always wanted to be a teacher ever since she was little she
was not sure which grade level. Growing up she had always prefered to play school rather than
with her dolls. I asked her would you have wanted a different job, than what you already have?
She said no, I love my job, I wouldnt trade it for the world. She described the children as ready
to learn, excited and ready for Kindergarten. She said I had always wanted a teaching career.
Teaching has made her very happy for many years. She said techniques she learned have helped
her become a better mother, and being a mother has helped me become a better teacher. She left
me with some advice. She said Sometimes life is about being in the right place at the right
time She said , I know SJB well. My children were at the school. I was ready to come back to
teaching and SJB needed a Kindergarten, so it was perfect! She left me with these words,
teaching is a profession that allows you many new beginnings. As each school year starts you
can change things, try new things and give yourself a new charge or boost.
I am observing her classroom for my early childhood education class. I have to observe
for 15 hours, each time I go I record what I see and hear. I am going to write about the first time I
went to observe I saw and heard many different things. The children were all at different centers.
The centers are called My Center, Independent Center, Center with Mrs. Lucey, and
Center with Mrs. Levin Some of the children are running around. Some are talking, and
coloring. Some children are trying to pronounce the word Mrs. Lucey just said out loud to them.
I asked the aide how many kids are in the class she said there are 17 kids in the class.
Mrs. Lucey is interacting with all the children in different ways. A few of the children are
discussing their birthdays. The children are asking Mrs. Lucey a lot of questions. Mrs. Lucey
particularly wanted the children to write and pronounce the letters M,N,O on a piece of paper.
The children are learning how to write at the same time so, they use fat pencils to help with their

grip. She pronounces the word the children repeat what they heard. A child just finished his work
both teachers congratulate him. Some girls are playing on the floor while reading books. Boys
and girls are sharing books, and reading to each other. Once they are finished with their centers
they have free time. During free time they play with each other. Some children are laying down
on the floor. Some are jumping up and down and across the room. Some of the girls are reading
to each other and giggling. The children are asking Mrs. Lucey and Mrs. Levin what to do next.
The children are coloring. They are mixing up colors. Some are laying down and doing whatever
they please. Some children are wondering what I am doing here. One child asked why is she
here? It was funny. It is now snack time. The teachers hand out welchs fruit snacks. I observed
all of this on February 23rd, 2016. This is just one observation session. They also have afternoon
centers, they are Art, Busy Town ( which is a little kitchen set to play with) and the have group
work. In the afternoon, they seem more productive, after they have their lunch.
Overall I would like to say that observing for 15 hours has taught me a lot about how I
should do things. It was so helpful, I really enjoyed observing her and all the children in her
class. It was fun and I hope to do it next semester.
