Conversation with an artist

2.1 Solve a visual arts problem that involves the effective use of the elements of art and the
principles of design.
1.3 Research and analyze the work of an artist and write about the artist's distinctive style and its
contribution to the meaning of the work.
3.3 Identify and describe trends in the visual arts and discuss how the issues of time, place, and
cultural influence are reflected in selected works of art.

change or defend that position after considering the views of others.

Supplies and resources:

oil paint
paintbrushes
canvas
paint palette
paint thinner and linseed oil
image of your artists painting

Any special preparation or safety requirements:

clothes that you dont mind getting paint on


be knowledgeable about the artist whose painting you choose to recreate

Any prior art skills needed by students:


need to know how to mix oil paint
need to know the elements of art and the principles of design
need to have some experience with painting and drawing
Vocabulary words: texture (implied and actual): The surface quality of materials, either actual
(tactile) or implied (visual).

Perspective: A system for representing three-dimensional objects viewed in spatial recession on a


two-dimensional surface.
Focal point: The place in a work of art on which attention becomes centered because of an
element emphasized in some way.
Background and motivation: Have students do research on different artists and have them
choose one whose work interests them
Lesson plan steps:
Choose you artist and work of art
Lightly sketch out with either light thin paint or a pencil your image
Paint a base coat of your colors in the areas that they go
Add in the details
Write a 1-2 page paper about your artist, the painting, and why you chose that painting
Participate in the class critique on the day it is due
Rubric:

each student must have a different painting that they choose to recreate
must have a 1-2 page paper about their artist, the painting, and why they chose the
painting they did
must participate in the class critique on the day it is due
the painting has to be a minimum of 11x14 in.
painting must have linear perspective

Extensions:

more advanced students can choose to stretch their own canvas as opposed to buying a
pre made one
more advanced students can make their painting be bigger than the size requirement
students can choose to make more than one painting by the same artist
