Weekly Highlights
This week in reading workshop we set off on a new journey to learn
more about nonfiction and book clubs! To start this new unit, we
compared fiction and nonfiction books using what we know about each
then learned new strategies for reading nonfiction, how to read in an
explaining voice, and how to share in a book club all we learned from a
nonfiction book. In our new book clubs we also had a chance to reread
to pay closer attention to key details and broke apart longer text into
parts by exploring headings, subheadings, paragraphs and pictures.
We just love reading and exploring nonfiction books!

In writing workshop, we continued writing lab reports like scientists.

This week we worked in partnerships to create a new question, formed
a hypothesis, conducted another experiment to test our question and
then worked hard on recording what we observed and a conclusion.
We also learned new science words (force, push, pull, gravity) along
with each of their means. We even tried adding this words to our
writing where they fit! By the end of the week, we used the
Informational Writing Rubric to evaluate our own writing so far and offer
feedback to our partners.
In word study, we started the week off by reviewing short vowel e,
controlled r, as well as the vowel clusters ea and ar. Students wrote
and built familiar words with these sounds. At the end of the week, we
learned or, ore, er, ir, and ur. Remember to review the spelling
lists sent home this week which include words with the sounds taught
above to reinforce what we worked. You can also locate these words in
books your child reads, in the classroom we say We are going on a
word hunt!
For math this week, we completed unit 5 focusing on telling time to
the hour and half hour. I am so proud of their hard work! Results for the
assessment will be coming home soon. On Wednesday, we began our
next and final unit of the year focusing on shapes. Students loved
recalling what they already know about 2D and 3D shapes through
many games and activities both independently and in small groups.
Ask your child about the many hands-on activities they completed!
In science, we finished our timeline projects and learning around
human life cycles before moving into learning about a plants life cycle.
To begin, read a mini-book and started a K-W-L chart to discover what
we Know, and Want to know. At the end of the unit we will complete
the chart by recording what we Learned about a plant life cycle. Next
week, we will plant our own seeds to watch grow and change over the
course of this unit!
As always, please contact me with any questions
