Installing LINUX Operating System(OS)

Purpose
You will learn how to install a LINUX operating system onto a personal
computer or laptop. Specifically, you will learn to install a version called
LINUX Ubuntu 14.04 from a CD or USB stick.
Introduction
Most people are familiar with the terms Windows Operating System(OS) or
MAC OSX. These are common operating systems that manage a computers
software and hardware and provide a basic user interface for applications like
word processors, web browsers, and programs most people use on a daily
basis. LINUX is an OS less commonly used for personal purposes although
many devices, such as all Android phones, are based on its software. What is
unique about LINUX is that it is open-source. This means that anyone can
use or change the software to tailor it for their own uses free of charge
provided they do so within the terms of the license agreement. Over 12,000
programmers have contributed to the development of LINUX in its various
forms over the years. The particular version that is the subject of this
instruction is Ubuntu 14.04.

What To Expect Now

If you are new to using a LINUX OS do not be worried. The layout and feel of
Ubuntu may be different than what you are used to but it comes preloaded
with a web browser, words processor, presentation software, and most of the
basic applications you would expect. Ubuntu will require more user
management than other operating systems. You may find this daunting but
it also gives you greater control over the contents of your property. If you
ever need help using your new operating system then, from the desktop,
click System then select Help and Support. There is always a helpful
community of LINUX users, developers, and enthusiasts willing to assist you
in learning.
