Social Networks are harmful to society

Since the cybernetic boom in 2000 a new way to interact with people around the world
appeared to those with internet access. This revolutionary way of interaction facilitates different
ways for people to meet each other. This boom is also responsible for the speed in which news
spreads around the world, whether it be in a matter of minutes or possibly even seconds. The
social network, Facebook, launched in 2004 by entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg. It has a revenue
of approximately 17.928 Billion dollars in 2015 alone. Facebook is believed to be one of the
most requested and successful social networks in the world. Not only is it lucrative, it is just as
popular and almost as addicting. This cyber addiction can change the lives of people and family
tremendously. Once this addition begins, it is quite difficult to rehabilitate oneself and in some
extreme causes has been a cause of death.

This addiction has become of one of the most

concerning problems of our time.

Audience and Purpose
The first genre 6 Scientific Reasons Social Networks Are Bad for Society by Luke
McKinney, is an article found on a web page that was published in 2011. The purpose of the
article is to inform the reader about the reasons that different fields of science have found why
social networks, are harmful to society and how it can change the way of thinking of a person or
a society as a whole.
The second Genre is a picture called FaceCrack by David Rainoshek . This picture is
a representation of how a social network can affect the human being as much as a drug. In this
picture we can see the word Facebook written with white powder, representing cocaine. The
picture also depicts what appears to be a teenager inhaling this word . He is seen with a white

paper directly inserted into his nose. This is one of, if not the most, vivid representations of an
addiction at the hands of a social network. In the description, the author states If you have
been getting a sinking feeling when you use Facebook that you did not have as a first-time or
new user The artist is illustrating that Facebook works essentially like a drug and how at
first, it appears that it would not have an addicting effect, that users do not believe that a
dependency' could occur, but as easily as you believe it is easy to take it at first and dont feel a
dependency but as you continue to use it you become an addict.
The first Genre, the article, is using more scientific words and some scientific facts. To
fully understand it, the reader would need might knowledge in a field of science, or at least
some education to fully comprehend what the author is trying to say. The article uses modern
and slang vocabulary such as Asshole in an attempt to attract readers that might otherwise not
have attempted to peruse the article. The author also uses some simple language in order to have
the reader understand the message he is trying to convey. The author does this with the intention
of appealing to a specific audience namely, they younger generation . The second genre, the
picture, is more simplistic with no regard for scientific information. It is used as a a-ha
moment in hopes of shocking the reader into understanding the grave danger of social media. At
the same time, the language as well as the delivery is simplistic in nature.
Both genres are equal in the way that they deliver the message to the reader, by using
modern problems or words that interest and catch their attention and deliver a strong massage.
These two works were created to start rhetoric between the users of such social networks and the
non-users to debate which was right, and these effectively fulfill their purpose, the article is the
top 3 results in searching social networks harmful to society and the picture has been going
around the social media of Facebook since it was posted in 2011 in some communities in which

the over use of social media was forbidden. The two target audiences were young people and
users of the social networks. Both genres give the audience information about the danger of
using it long periods of time without properly resting, and what are the outcomes of using it in an
unsafe manner.
Both genres differ in how the message is delivered to the target audience. One being
simple enough to everyone to understand and the other being more selective to how is going to
understand the message delivered. This can make a huge difference in the way of thinking
depending on one's age.
Rhetorical Issues
Both genres are different in the way in the way the information is delivered.
Ethos
The first genre cites the article of Narcissism and Social Networking Web Sites by
Laura E. Buffardi of the University of Georgia published in the SAGE journals. At the beginning
of the article, it also cites the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication a work research in
relationships through Facebook in 2008. We can see easily that his article is supported by
research made by those who are well versed on the subject, making them subject-masters in
their fields. The second genre, , however is completely the opposite of the first, the picture is
not citing anything in particular, and not at all scientific, in nature. It is only a picture with no
credibility of a subject-master. The author of this article has no knowledge on the subject, in
fact he has a degree in Intentional Communities: Spiritual, Educational, and Agrarian.
Pathos

The article has strong emotional undertones for the reader. One sub title of the article is
Thousands of friends means none which states that no matter how many friends that your
Facebook profile says you have, in reality, only 5 or less truly cares about the outcome. This can
leave an emotional though in the reader of how many people actually cares about them. The
picture also delivers strong emotions in the viewer, by showing that Facebook is as addictive as
any other drug in the market and it can make you just as dependent on it.
Logos
The first genre uses terminology . This terminology makes it look more professional but
in the same way, using words like asshole ,makes it look as a vulgar article with no true facts
or not based on real research. It could be harmful to the articles purpose of spreading the findings
in different fields of science and that it has evidence to support everything written in the article
from beginning to end. The second genre can be taken as a fictional art of work and taken lightly
or misinterpreted, leaving the work of the author in the limbo for some people thinking if take
the picture as a fiction case or as a real threat to society. The first genre is only about the way
people around the world think about themselves , how the insecurity and different psychological
problems start to bloom in he minds of the user. The second genre is warnings the viewer in a
way that he will think about logging in to the social networks.
Structure and Delivery
The topic opens a variety of ways to handle the information in a entertaining manner. The
first genre to make the reader more interested in the article using different types of vocabulary.
Although this can be harmful to the article by people who may feel offended leaving the article
other will stay and read it to find what else can be found in this rich article full of useful

information. The way the article is structured is fantastic, providing interesting pictures for each
subtitle, and showing examples of them. The second genre is more direct, it gives everything the
viewer needs to feel in an astonishing and impacting way that leaves the viewer with a huge load
to think about. This is a direct way to transmit an idea, but can be easily misinterpreted by
people.
Conclusion
Each genre is unique in the way that can handle information. The audience can differ,
how is presented to the audience. The first genre was more professional, the second was for the
public in general. Both effectively transmitted their message in how social networks can be
harmful to a person, community and society as a whole. The genres in which the topic is
delivered change dramatically how the information is handle, impactful and strong, using hidden
language in the pictures or the article. These to genres are strong in each respective way, every
genre is special in the way the information is delivered , but both are equal in how strong the
message is.
