FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

By Student Interns:
Why should I be part of an internship?
The internship allows the student an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills
acquired in a professional setting prior to joining the workforce. You will gain
valuable work experience as well as an opportunity to explore your career path.
How do I qualify to be placed as an intern?
Good grades, positive attitude, punctual and regular attendance will get you on the
selection list; however, placements are based on the number of spaces made
available to us (SJPP) from the business community.
Will I get academic credit for my internship?
This will depend on the programme you are taking with the institution. Please see
your programme guide or speak with your Head of Division, Industrial Liaison
Department or Guidance Officer for clarity.
Will I be paid on my internship?
Employers are not obligated to provide any payment during the internship period.
However, the institution usually requests a stipend to assist students with internship
related cost; however, some companies may be unable to meet this request.
What happens at the end of my internship?
You will be required to complete a students feedback questionnaire, either online or
in hard copy and submit it to the Industrial Liaison Department accordingly. You
may also wish to register yourself for a job placement after graduation. You may
also request a letter of recommendation from your internship supervisor once you
have earned a passing internship grade.
Will I be considered for employment?
The company with which you completed your internship is not obligated to hire you
for a permanent nor a part-time position. However, you may register on the
schools webpage for a job placement on completion.

By Employers of Interns:
How do I request to be involved in the Internship Program?
If your organization has not been approached by us as yet, please feel free to
contact the Campus Industrial Liaison Office at 426-1920 Ext. 2250. Or you may
wish to submit an online registration request - to do so, click on our Corporate Tab
for directions.
How long can I keep my intern (s)?
The length of time for the internship may vary depending on the Programme the
intern is registered in. This information may be found in your initial letter which
gives the specific details of the internship. However, most internships are for six (6)
to eight (8) weeks, while some are on a day-release for one (1) semester and in
other cases they are for an entire semester.
How does the student benefit from an unpaid internship?
The internship program is designed to provide the student with a practical
experience which bridges the gap between their classroom learning and the
intended career.
How do I prepare for my interns?
Kindly fill out all the necessary forms and return them to us within the stipulated
time frame. Share the role your company will play by partaking in the internship
program. Orientate the intern to your organization. Discuss duties, responsibilities,
expectations and training. Be sure to provide all the necessary work-related
amenities for the intern.
What if I have a problem intern?
From time-to-time there may be misalignment between the employer, the
experience and the intern. Interns do not have the same rights as employees in the
realms of unemployment or termination procedures. Decide whether the
error/mistake deserves a second chance. If not, provide counsel to the student on
why the internship has to be discontinued and notify the Campus Industrial Liaison
Office immediately.
