Tour of duty:
Aug. '70 - July '71
U.S. Army
1st Cav. 2nd/8th
Delta Co. Range 1

5 Aug 1970
Nick Harrington was from
Bennington, Vermont and
had been in my AIT class at
Ft Ord California. Neither
of us received orders at
graduation and were held
over a week.
Nick and I enjoyed our day
on Okinawa and we both
ended up in Delta Co. 2/8th
Cav.
I sent my personal
shipment home on Nicks
orders because I did not get
my orders in time.

Water Buffalo was killed
on 03 Sept 70
when he lost his way and
got outside the perimeter.

The AK 47 was
the primary
weapon of the
Viet Cong. This
AK 50 had a
folding stock
which made it
several pounds
lighter and easier
to handle.

Student #13
As top graduate I was awarded a
promotion to Spec. 4.
An interesting coincidence was that my
lottery number was 13, it was also my
badge number at CLC.

This is Thanksgiving
dinner1970, brought
to the field by
chopper.
It was not the best
turkey I have ever
had but it tasted
pretty good after 3
months of canned
"C" rations and
freeze dried LRPs
(Long Range Patrol
Meals)

We were pretty excited
about the arrival of the
new
M-203 weapon.
It was an M-16 Rifle
with a 40 mm grenade
launcher suspended
under the rifle barrel.
Doc Crawshaw and
Ray Graham were great
partners for this photo.
I think Doc Crawshaw
was from Peoria Ill

. I was one of his first inoculation subjects. He also treated me for a major boil on
my arm. The treatment was to stuff gauze into the arm under the skin. As the arm
began to heal he would pull out about 6 to eight inches each day and clip it off. I
guess the gauze was a wick for the infection. This treatment lasted for several days.

This was a nice
spot for a rest
and our platoon
sergeant E6
Stanley Dillion
was a willing
participant as he
displayed the
new M-203
weapon, which
had just arrived
in the field. The
M-203 was a
combination M16
Rifle and 40mm
grenade
launcher.

Many of us spent a lot
of time just on the
beach soaking up the
sun and swimming. It
was a welcome
change from the sweat
and bugs in the bush.

Nick Harrington and I
met in A.I.T. at Fort
Ord Cal. and were
together through our
entire tour. Nick was
initially assigned to
Cat and got out of the
field soon as an
R.T.O. for the
Battalion Commander
on the Fire Base.
When I left the field I
went to the rear at
Mace and Bien Hoa.

Nick was from Bennington Vermont he loved to tell stories about deep
snow and driving snow mobiles out of the hay loft of the barn.

made the final

faster as all
preparations were
made, but there
was still time to
wait.
