Abstract:
Wegotthemotivationtodothisprojectbecausewewerehopingtobeableto
studybrainwavesandpsychologybutthatwouldhavebeenreallyhardtomeasureso
insteadwedecidedtotrysomethingalittledifferentforourexperiment.Wetriedto
answerthequestionofiftemposcouldaffectapersonsheartrateand/ormood.We
thoughtthatasthetempowentupourtestsubjectsheartratewouldgoupaswell.
Insteadasaresultmostofourtestsubjectsheartratewouldgoupanddownbutthere
wasnodramaticdifferenceuntilweturnedthelasttempooffmostsubjectsheartrate
wouldshootupdramaticallyafterthetemposwentoff.
Thetopicofourexperimentistodeterminewhetherdifferenttemposcanaffect
humanmoodsortheirheartrate.Wearedoingthisexperimentbecausewewouldlike
tounderstandiftypesofmusicormusictemposwillchangeapersonsmoodorhow
theyarefeeling.Thenifweunderstandthiswecanlistentoacertaintypeofmusicata
specifictempotochangeourmoodfortheday.Inourexperimentsoundwavesare
essentialtoourexperimentbecausetheyarethesoundmadethattravelsthrougha
mediumtoourtestsubjectsear.Thetempothatpeoplewillhearwilltravelwiththe
soundwavetotheear.Thetempocouldalsoaffectpsychology,orhowapersonfeels
orthinks.Humanbeingscandistinguisharangeoftemposfromaround40300beats
perminute.Thegoldenmarkisabout119.80beatsperminute.Ourpredictionforthe
outcomeofthisexperimentisthatthehigherthetempoisthefasteryourheartbeatwill
beandyouwillbecomehappier.Soourquestionisifdifferenttemposcanaffecthuman
moodand/orheartrate,thenourhypothesisiswebelievetheirheartratewillgoupand
theywillbecomehappierasthetempogoesup.
Inourexperimentweusedaheartratemonitorthatgoesonthefingeranda
metronomeforthefourdifferenttemposforpeopletolistentoinordertodetermine
whetherheartrateormoodwillchangewhilelisteningtodifferenttempos.Wewillset
thefourdifferenttemposforpeopletolistento,whichare40BPM,80BPM,120BPM,
and200BPM.Wewillfirsthaveourtestsubjectstakeasurveysoweknowhowthey
arefeelingbeforetheexperiment,andwewillchecktheirheartrate.Wewillthenletthe
temposplayfor30secondseach,taketheirheartrate,thenchangetothenexttempo.
Afterwegothroughallfourtempostheywillretakethesurveytoseeifmoodhas
changedatall.
Theresultsoftheexperimentwereunexpected.Wefoundthatpeopleheartbeats
skyrocketedafterlisteningtothetempo.Wealsofoundthattheirheartbeatswere
slower,indicatingcalmness,duringthetemposplaying.Theexperimentwasdone
becausewewantedtodosomethingtodowithbrainsandreactionstosoundwaves,
butbrainwavesaretoohardtotrack,sowedecidedonsomethingeasiertomeasure.
Weexpectedtohavetheheartbeatgoupwhenthetempowentfaster,butthatisnt
whathappened.Wehavelearnedthattempocanaffectapersonsheartrate.
Wefoundoutthatpeople'sheartbeatgoesupdramaticallyoncethetoneturns
off.Formostofthetests,theheartbeatwentdownthenupthenbackdown.People
moodsgothappier,forthelevelmeterwentupbyatleastonepoint.WithChloes
results,herhappinesswentdownduetotheweather.Hercalculationswerenotusedin
theresultsofthisexperiment.
