Women

Women are greatly affected by this

issue. The media causes for the
majority of women to feel insecure
about their image. Starting off with
weight insecurities, many women
turn to starving themselves in order to
look as thin as they want to be and
this ultimately leads to several health
issues including anorexia, bulimia,
etc. According to National Eating
Disorders Association, There is no
single cause of body dissatisfaction or
disordered eating. But, research is
increasingly clear that media does
indeed contribute and that exposure
to and pressure exerted by media
increase body dissatisfaction and
disordered eating. Even if a woman
is in the normal weight range for her
height, she may still feel like she
needs to be thinner. This is because
average women dont have thigh gaps
like the women in the picture.

Men
The media affects what people think is
beautiful and what is not, by praising
specific traits on men and women in the
media. Often times when thinking about
struggling with body image we are
quick to assume that we are talking
about women. Although, men too, feel
insecure about themselves. According to
HealthyPlace.com, The American
Journal of Psychology notes male
incidences of eating disorders, such as
anorexia and bulimia, now account for
as much as 10% of all cases. Even
though this does affect women more, we
need to consider everyone in this matter.

Women Contd
Only a very small percentage of
women in Western countries meet the
criteria the media uses to define
"beautiful" yet so many women are
repeatedly exposed to media images
that send the message that a woman is
not acceptable and attractive if she do
not match society's "ultra-thin"
standard of beauty said Dittmar &
Howard. Women all over feel as
though they arent good enough or
pretty enough or healthy enough, etc.
