REPUBLIC

How was the name Jacobin club formed? Who became the members of this club?
E.A. The Jacobin Club got its name from the former convent of Saint Jacob in
Paris. See
p14 lp : 1to 5.

How did Jacobins dress themselves? Why did they do so?


E.A. see p14 lp : 5 to 10.

Who were sans-culottes?


E.A. These were the people who belonged to Jacobin Clubs they got the name

sansculottes due to their dress they wore. In addition they also wore red cap that
symbolized liberty. Women were not allowed to do so.

What do you mean by the term Reign of Terror? Explain briefly.


E.A. The Reign of Terror refers to the period from 1793 to 94 in France. During

this
period Robespierre adopted a policy of severe punishment & control. Around 15,000
people
belonging to nobility, clergy & even people from his own group were victimized for
showing
resentment against his rule. Those found guilty were guillotined. Even the king & the
queen were
not spared & were also guillotined.

Why women were disappointed with the Constitution of 1971 & what were their
demands?

In order to voice their interests what was done by the women in France & when
did they
finally get right to vote?
E.A. In order to voice their interests, women started their own political clubs &

newspapers. About 60 womens clubs popped up in the different French cities. The
Society of

Revolutionary & Republican women were the most famous of them. It was finally in
1946 that
women in France won the right to vote.
