H2020 - GA n646286

ALION is an EU funded project (H2020, NMP13-2014) for developing the Aluminium-Ion Battery technology for energy storage
application in decentralised electricity generation sources. ALION pursues an integral approach comprising electroactive
materials based on rocking chair mechanism, ionic liquid-based electrolytes as well as novel cell concepts.
This results in a technology with much lower cost, improved performance, safety and reliability with respect to current energy
storage solutions.
The final objective of this project is to obtain an Aluminium-Ion Battery module validated in a
relevant environment, with a specific energy of 400 Wh/kg, a voltage of 48V and a cycle life
of 3000 cycles.

Most of literature (just 15 papers) focus in the use of Imidazolium based I.L. between a pure Al metallic
anode and a Al-intercalation material, see [1] and [2].

ALION project proposes 3 pathways for the development of the Al-ion cell:
Al Anode performance improvement: Al alloys, surface treatments, Al 3D structures, etc.
Advanced I.L.: imidazolium, pirrolidinium, based, aditives, solid I.L. electrolytes, etc.
Rocking chair mechanism: new materials based Al-insertion anode and cathode cell.
The project also includes:
A computational model of the Al-ion cell and simulation based on electrodic materials.
Full Life cycle assessment, impacts of the components and recycling.
Overall economic study and validation of the final battery in a real environment.

The entire value chain is covered in this project!
