Assignment 1-Telling My Story

2
Abstract

This assignment identifies the six domains of the California Teacher Performance
Expectations (TPEs). In this assignment I will select the domain I will be focusing on and
show proof of my growth in that area through three artifacts. In this assignment I will
also identify my strength and needs associated with the chosen TPE Domain. I will also
discuss potential TPE competencies to be used for my PDQP. Lastly, I will provide a
rationale for selecting and completing areas of professional needs and goals achieved for
the chosen TPE domain.

Assignment 1-Telling My Story

The Six Teacher Performance Expectations

A teacher has many responsibilities. Their biggest responsibility is to continue to
grow as an educator in order to effectively educate their students. Teachers must learn
and understand the following six teaching performance expectations:
A.
B.
C.
D.
E.
F.

Making Subject Matter Comprehensible to Students

Assessing Student Learning
Engaging and Supporting Students in Learning
Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for Students
Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning
Developing as a Professional Educator

The domain I will be choosing is Domain A: Making a Subject Matter

Comprehensible to Students. Throughout my experience as a long-term substitute and my
student teaching, I have learned many effective strategies that allow me to make subject
matter more comprehensible to the students. It has allowed me to create engaging lesson
plans that also maintain an effective classroom environment.
The first artifact that I have chosen is a 2nd grade Math lesson that I created. I
chose this article because it demonstrates my ability to integrate technology into a math
lesson through the use of iPads. The use of technology keeps my students engaged in the
lesson. The second artifact that I have chosen is a classroom observation. I chose this
article because it demonstrates my ability to develop as an educator in mathematics by
observing another educator teach a math lesson. I was able to learn new classroom
management strategies and ways to keep students engaged in math. The third artifact that
I have chosen is a literature review of Mindy Onans, Daily Number Talks and the
Development of computational Strategies in Fourth Graders. I chose this artifact because
I recently learned about daily Number Talks and plan to implement them into my own
classroom.

Telling My Story

Throughout my experience as a long-term substitute and my student teaching I

have made growth in Domain A. Now that I have completed student teaching I feel like I
have learned many strategies that I believe will allow me to create effective lessons that
keep my students engaged. Although I feel comfortable creating engaging lessons, I know
I can still grow as educator.
Strengths and Needs within TPE Domain A:
A. Making Subject Matter Comprehensible To Students
TPE 1A: Teaching mathematics in a Multiple Subject Assignment

Strengths

Teaching Mathematics in
a Multiple Subject
Assignment

Now that Ive completed

most of the courses for a
Masters in Educational
Technology, I feel that
my biggest strength is
incorporating technology
into my lessons. By
using technology, I am
able to keep my students
engaged and prepare
them for the real world.
With all the
technological advances
in recent years, students
need to learn how to use
technology. I want to
prepare them for their
future careers. I have
also learned how to use
technology to make
collaborative lessons.

Area for Growth: What

do I want to learn more
about? Where can I
strengthen my skills?
I want to get better at
making engaging writing
lessons that incorporate
technology.
I also want to get better
at assessing my students
reading abilities and
creating lesson to
improve their reading
abilities.

Assignment 1-Telling My Story

Potential Competencies to be used for the Professional

Development Quest
Working on my PDQP has allowed me to see that I know how to
use technology effectively. I think implementing technology into my
teaching is one of my strengths. I love using technology because my
students are engaged and they have fun learning. I tend to use it
mostly in technology but want to use it somehow in all subjects.
Rationale for selecting TPE Domain A
The reason I chose TPE 1A is because Mathematics is the easiest
subject for me to teach. In my opinion, my math lessons are very
engaging and my students grasp the concepts. Im also able to find
many ways to implement technology into these lessons. I think the
reason I like teaching math is because I had great math teachers
during my schooling.
