The goal of introducing the client to all the

services provided at NOAH for an initial visit
is an important one. As you go through the
conversation make sure you are meeting this
goal while addressing the client's immediate
concerns. At the end of the session a client
should leave with a better understanding of the
agency and their immediate needs met.

The Noah Project I

Good introduction. This is something to
always do with an initial client. Because of the
casework list we know their name and begin to
collect their information but an introduction of
yourself allows them to know that you care
and that it is not just a one way relationship.

Miss Jones, my name

is Tracy Hawthorne, I
will
be your case manager
today.Nice to meet
you.

I am feeling
anxious since
I am
unsure of how
the client will
respond to
me.

I used a
standard
greeting to
introduce
myself.

See above.

Client: Nice to meet

you too.

today?
For many of our clients each day is
challenging and so asking "How are you?" can
be tricky. Sometimes an easier question to ask
is "What brings you in today?". This can allow
the client to still share what is going on
without facing the reality that most days are
extremely challenging.

same

See above.

Client: I am very
upset at the moment. I
have a
money order that I am
not able to cash
because
it is in my sister's
name, and the store
will not
let me cash it. I was
counting on that
money, and
now I can not have it
makes me very upset.
(in tears)

I felt bad for

the client
since
it seemed that
she was
overwhelmed

She seems
very
frazzled
and
discouraged

their sister to sign the back of the check over
this may not be a reality for this client. When

offering suggestions it is important to try and

not assume that a client can do something.
Would try phrasing it as a question instead of a
statement of what to do next. The empathy that
you show here is good though, it allows the
client to know that you recognize and care
about the emotions that they are experiencing.

not being able

to meet her
need in this
area since she
is
overwhelmed.

See above.

Client: Yes I would

like some
tissue and no I want
to continue
because I want some
help and I
am ready to do
everything
to change my life.

It seems as
though the
client want to
change
what is going
on in her life.

I feel that
the client
wants to
change,
but does
not have
the right
resources
to be able
to change.

The explanation of NOAH is extremely

important. It is in this section that it is
important to be clear about what we can and
cannot offer. While going through the initial
assessment is when it is good to explain what
we offer. You do a good job of asking deeper
questions about what the client begins to
explain when you ask about the rental portion.

SW: (Explains the

program) It's
ok what your rental
portion is ?

Client: They haven't

sent papers for that
yet

SW: Are you

working?

Client: Not at this

time

I am
same
concerned
about why
she is not able
to work

SW: What was your

last job?

same

Client: I worked at
Kroger but

I am

that only lasted for 2

months

that she is
not able to
hold down a
job

While you want to figure out what went wrong SW: What happen
with that job this would also be an opportunity with that job?
to highlight that job as an accomplishment.
With a lot going on it would be important to
figure out what was it about that job that the
client liked or is this something they would
want to seek again in the future.

same

same

While children can be a barrier for

employment, many clients love to talk about
their kids and their kid's accomplishments.
This would be an opportunity to highlight
another part of the client's life that brings them
joy while also bringing difficulties.

Client: I had a hard

time
watching someone to
watch
my kid

I feel bad she

is not
able to work
due to
her situation.

It seems
she wants
to work
but she has
many
barriers
that are
stopping
her from
doing so

See above.

SW: Where did you

work before that

same

same

See above.

Client: Work Study

same

same

This detail is a good one to follow-up with to

make sure the client is receiving the proper
amount of benefits. If the client is no longer
receiving this income, a change report should
be filed which will allow the client's benefits to
increase.

SW: Even through

you say are
not working it is
showing that
you have an income
of $120
a week

It made me
wonder how
she
didn't know
where that
income was
coming from

same

See above.

Client: I don't know

same
how
because I do not have
any income right now

Because the client is not receiving any income SW: How are you
right now, this question could cause a lot of
meeting
pain. While we wonder how she is able to
your basic needs?
survive for both her and her child this question
is probably probing more than we need to.
When asking questions especially in an intake,
you want to ask questions that are going to
help you assess and serve the client more

She seems
desperate
financially

This made me same

wonder how
she was able
to survive

holistically. Because of previous questions and

information gathered I wonder if this question
adds much to the intake or if it simply
highlights the parts of the client's life that are
challenging right now.
See above.

Client: I am living off

my
student loans and
grants

In the midst of gathering basic information

you do a good job of highlighting how we can
be helpful and what the client's next steps are.

SW: (Explaining the

same
program further) Here
is the information
for the class and these
must be completed
before July. Also
to stay in the program
you must obtain and
keep employment
for 12 months before
your contract expires.
Are there other
barriers to way you
can't maintain
employment?

same

You have already addressed the barriers to

employment as far as childcare and financial
obligations. By asking this question again it
brings the focus back to the negatives of the
situation instead of the positives. While both
are important, because the client is struggling
emotionally during this session, empowerment
based questions would be more successful for
the client to be able to take the next steps
forward and to leave feeling more emotionally
stable than when they entered the office.

Client: (crying again)

Yes I have no family
support,so I have no
one to watch my child

I feel bad for

her because
she is so
overwhelmed

She sounds
hopeless
that
she has no
support

See above.

SW: So it goes
beyond child care?

same

same

See above.

Client: Yes it is
transportation and i
just don't want to put
her with anyone.

I feel bad for

her because
she sounds
hopeless.

She seems
discourage
because
she thinks

https://www.alceasoftware.com/web/form.php?ufid=137253

I feel bad
knowing she
has
to rely on this
as her only
source of
income

It seems
that her
finances
are a major
concern for
her

Being the way I was

raised I did't have a
lot of guidance. I feel
like everyone
around me is doing
bad things and they
seem to be doing
well, but I don't do
drugs or abuse my kid
and I still struggle.

that
everyone
around
her has it
better than
her.

It is this kind of comment that I was hoping

for earlier in the session. The more you can
empower the client during your time together
the better. These interactions need to be
sincere but also the more often and casual you
can mention them the better.

SW: If I can interject

it is ok to feel
overwhelmed and to
feel like others
around you have it all
and you don't. I
know what it is like to
feel like you have
no support and you
want to change. To
have to many
expectations and not
be
able to meet them can
be overwhelming.
You're here and that
shows that you want
to change. I do that
where I take on too
much and get
disappointed
when it does not
work.

I am
concerned
because
she is
overwhelmed
and
does not have
the support
that she
needs.

I used an
empathic
response to
show
my concern
for her.

See above.

Client: Yes that sound I am glad to

like me
hear that she
is responding
to me.

She seems
to be able
to
relate to
what I have
said
and
understands
that
everyone
has
difficulty
in their

lives.
This question allows you to determine what
the client's goals are which is a good question
to ask. If you had asked it sooner it would
have allowed you to guide the conversation
differently, but the important thing is it was
asked.

SW: What goals

would you like to
accomplishment.

same

See above.

Client: I also have 10

year old son who
has a disability and
sometimes I take
it out on him. He acts
out in school.
We have moved
around 6 times and
he has been in 6
different schools.
I am also pregnant
with my third child.

I am feeling
same
angry that she
is relocating
her son to
different
schools and
then
wondering
why he is
acting
out and that
she is
pregnant
again.

While these steps are good ones to encourage

it is also important to figure out what steps that
the client has already taken, again taking more
of an empowerment based approach.

SW: If you are

concerned about his
behavior
you need to speak to
the school and the
pediatrician. Is there a
reason why you are
moving
around so much?

I hope that by
the worker
saying this
that the client
will follow
through. I feel
that she could
benefit
from
parenting
classes.

It seems
that she
feels

Good job remembering to make copies of

everything in the midst of the many pieces of
this session.

While addressing the immediate need of a

lunch at this point in wrapping up it would
also be good to reinforce the client's next steps
and long term goals. It is a tricky balance
between the immediate needs and long term
but you want to make sure that in each session
you are addressing both.

Provide an evaluation of your overall skill during the session.
I found myself feeling overwhelming for the client. I found myself feeling sorry for the client and her
situation in the beginning, and then I found myself becoming mad at her in how she treated her children
especially her son. I was able to keep my composure during the meeting which is something that I have
been working on during meetings. Along with that I felt I was judgmental at some points. I hope to be
able to become aware of those feelings so that they do not cloud my thinking while I am trying to assess
my clients

I feel this session I was effective because she seemed to appreciate that I was able to relate to her feelings.
