Google Maps Task

Using Google Maps, your job is to locate various landforms and landscapes
around the world. By the end of this task you should be able to use Co-Ordinate
points to locate specific locations in Google maps. You have one period to
complete this task.

Warm Up Getting to Know Google Earth

Use the Co-ordinates to search in Google Earth. Complete the landform and
landscape columns. To find the Co-Ordinates, right click on the location, select
the Whats here option. Once this is selected, the top left info box will change,
displaying the co-ordinates in decimal form. Convert these to the DegreesMinutes-Seconds form by clicking on these co-ordinates.

Now that we have located some landforms, we will have a look at the size of
them using the measurement tool. To use this, right click and select the measure
distance option. Click again on the screen to see a ruler appear. The ends can
be dragged around, and new points added. Simply click a point to make it
disappear. All measurements can be cleared by right clicking and selecting the
Clear Measurements option.
Uluru
Measure the distance of Uluru from its
most Western Point to its most Eastern
Point.
How far is the southernmost point of
Uluru from Mutitjulu:
1. As the Crow Flies?
2. By roadways?
Your second answer above will not be
an exact number. Compare with the
person next to you what routes you
have taken. Do your answers differ?
How significantly? Why would this be
so?

Compare and Contrast

Select two landforms and complete the following table to compare and contrast
You may wish to have Google Maps open in two windows side by side to make
comparisons easier. Drag the top of the Internet Browser to the far side of the
screen to lock it into place.
The landforms you can select from are:
Mt Kosciusko
Lake Eyre
London Arch
Buchan Cave
Campaspe River

landscapes to each
other.

Landform 2

Once you have completed the table, compare your results to someone who has
picked the same landform as one of yours. Check your answers above against
each other. You may have different answers why would this be so? Dot Point
