THE INTERVIEW PROCESS

The interview process

Before conducting a counseling session with Tomas and his family. Tomas gives the
human services worker some background information on himself. Tomas was sent to live with
his parental uncles family in Miami at the age of twelve. Now Tomas has a son that is having
some behavioral issues. Tomas needs professional help with dealing with his son. Tomas is
thinking about possibly sending his son to live with his Aunt in Cuba.
After listening to Tomas about his concerns for his son, the human services worker has to
find out what all the members in the group session are wanting. The human services worker will
also outline the different resources that are available to them. After addressing all the problems
that are present the human service worker can set a plan up for the family and give them different
options. The human services worker needs to make sure the family understands the plan and is
okay with what they have planned. Also, make sure the family is able to make it to all the
appointments and agree with the resources. After the problem has been identified, and a plan has
been set up the human services worker should make sure the family is following through with the
plan that has been set up.
The human services worker must make sure at the beginning of the session that he/she
informs the client of HIPPA and that all session are kept confidential, unless they speak of
causing harm to themselves or another person. Informing the client of the confidentiality
between a worker and a client is very important and also making sure the client understands what
the worker is telling them.
When listening to the client be sure to be an active listener and to address the client with
the right questions. You do not want to be too leading or impose on the client.

THE INTERVIEW PROCESS

When the client is done speaking, it is helpful if the human services worker paraphrases
or clarifies what the client has said. This makes the client feel more as if the worker understands
them and also was paying very close attention.
