Throughoutthiscentury,theroleofwomenwithinsocietyhas
changed,andthemajorityofpeoplefeelthatthechangeisfor
thebetter.Morewomenworkthaneverbefore,anditis
acceptedinWesternculturethatmanywomennowhave
careers.Nonetheless,inmyopinionthereisstillagreatdealof
sexualdiscriminationagainstwomenwithinsociety,andthe
beliefthatsexualequalityhasbeenachievedisnotaltogether
accurate.
Tobeginwith,manywomenfinditverydifficulttoreturnto
workafterhavingchildren.Themainreasonforthisisthatthere
arerarelyanyprovisionsmadeforchildcareintheworkplace
and,inthesecases,womenareforcedtofindsomeonetolook
afterthechildrenwhiletheyareatwork.Obviously,thiscan
provetobeatimeconsumingandexpensiveprocess,yetit
mustbedoneifmothersaretobeabletoresumetheircareers.
Secondly,thetraditionalviewsofthepositionofwomenwithin
societyaresodeeplyingrainedthattheyhavenotreally
changed.Forinstance,notonlyistheviewthatwomenshould
stayathomeandlookaftertheirfamilystillwidelyheld,butit
isreinforcedthroughimagesseenontelevisionprogrammesand
advertisements.Anexampleofthisisthatfewmenareever
seendoinghouseworkontelevision,sincethisistraditionally
thoughtofas"awoman'sjob".
Thirdly,sincefamiliesoftenneedtwoincomesinordertoenjoy
agoodstandardofliving,awomanfindsherselfdoingtwojobs:
oneathomeandoneattheoffice.So,itcouldbesaidthata
woman'spositionhas,infact,deterioratedratherthanimproved,
withtheresultthatwomencarrytheburdensofequalitybutget
noneofthebenefits.

Incontrast,therearesomepeoplewhoclaimthattheproblem
ofsexualdiscriminationnolongerexists.Theypointoutthat
womendo,afterall,havelegalrightsintendedtoprotectthem
fromdiscrimination.Inaddition,afewwomenarenow
beginningtoreachtoppositionsasjudges,businessleadersand
politicians,whileanumberofotherpreviouslyallmale
professionsareopeningtheirrankstowomen.Nonetheless,
theseexamplesarenotthenormanddiscriminationisstillvery
muchwithus.
Takingthesepointsintoconsideration,Iwouldsaythatthe
positionofwomenhasimprovedonlyslightly.Whilerulesand
lawshavechanged,itisthedeeprootedopinionsofpeople
withinsocietywhicharetakingalongertimetoevolve.
Needlesstosay,attitudeshavechanged,sexualdiscrimination
willremainaproblemwhichweallneedtofaceandfight
against.
