Key Tasks: Student use a piece of
circular paper to
construct a collapsed
pyramid.
These are put together
to form Icosahedrons,
which students then
propose methods for
finding TSA and Volume.

Elaborations

Using circular paper to

construct pyramids will give
students are greater
understanding of both shapes.
As the pyramid is created,
students name and label if the
various circle properties they
create, such as arcs, secants,
segments, and chords.
The creation of the Icosahedron
allows students to see shapes
being made of composite
objects. This will encourage
their thinking into the
relationship between volume
and 3 Dimensional objects,
which will be of use in this unit
and in Year 10.
Students propose equations for
finding the TSA and Volume of
the Icosahedron they create.
Students are encouraged to
investigate the volume of the
tetrahedron to find the total
volume.

If time allows, Students may

make an Octahedron or even
follow the instruction to make a
sphere.
Students are questioned
informally throughout the class
on what they can recall about
circles.
