Analyzing existing products

User: For people that cant afford a closet.
Material: In this photo is made of metal
but I think it could be better with wood.
Function: For organizing shoes.
I think its not difficult to do but the problem
here is that we would need help of a
carpenter and probably he would do al the
product.

Material: Plastic
Function: To keep the food (chips, cereal)
in a good temperature and to protect the
food from insects.
I think its difficult because how we are
going to made the shape with plastic

User: For adults

Material: wood, fruit boxes, plants, wheels
and glue.
Function: Decoration.
Its easier. My team and I could get the
material easier and we could make most of
the product. Maybe we could need a
carpenter but just in a small detail.

Justify need
My name is Analaura Rodriguez Vizcarra. Im studying in Instituto
Anglo Britanico. I am on myp IV grade. The Innovative Fair is on a
few months. We are in the process of selecting our products. We
have been working on different criterias that may help us to select
our product. We have been searching for special products related
with chemistry, common problems or ecological problems. The
product first of all has to function and then, to solve a real problem in
our common lifes.
The problem very often nowadays is that we humans dont care about
the environment and thats a real problem because the environment

is staring to change, to show us all the damage we are making to the

earth. The global warming is one of the biggest problems we are
suffering. The climate change also, we are cutting many trees for
making furnitures and other stuffs.
Many of the wood that is cut are a waste because usually people use
the product just once. For example, on the supermarkets Heb, WalMart, etc., they use a box of wood to save fruits and vegetables. They
use these boxes just a few times and then are throw to the trash. Its
totally a waste. These boxes can be reduced. But how? I think no one
has ever think about this real problem.
Its important to think about everything when we are doing an action.
Many resources are really helping us to solve many problems but we
are affecting our home. Wood is a useful resource but were finishing
the trees. The trees. The ones that give us oxygen to live. Climate
change, pollution, damage of the ozone layer. One day our planet is
going to be done.

Do you think this probmes has to be solved?

yes
no
waste fo time

Prioritize research
Wasting material that is made from natural resources is a real problem
nowadays. Some industrys doesnt care about these and they continue
making their mess. There is a company that reports this case and gives them
punishment. There are many several organizations that protect the ecosystem,
the waste of resources. Without them probably we will be worst. The waste of
wood is a big problem. We need the trees for oxygen and we humans know
that, but its like if we didnt care. We continue making dangerous stuffs. If we
continue like this someday we would get without oxygen I mean, trees. The
common organizations that protect our planet are trying to save oceans, waste
of resources and saves animals.
These are the organizations:
Earth Island Institute works for solutions to environmental problems by
promoting citizen action and incubating a diverse network of projects Tree
People - mission is to inspire the people of Los Angeles to take personal
responsibility for the urban forest - educating, training and supporting them as
they plant and care for trees and improve the neighborhoods in which they live,
learn, work and play Trees for the Future - A nonprofit organization established
in 1989with a mission to help communities in Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia,
Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, India, Indonesia, Philippines,
Brazil, Haiti, and Honduras plant trees. Sierra Club - Organization that helps to
protect & save Americas Forests, Arctic refuges, Lakes, Rivers, Streams, and
National Wildlife Stop Global Warming - a non-political effort to bring all
Americans together in one place, proving there is a vast consensus that global
warming is here now and it is time for our country to start addressing it
These organizations are doing the best they can. Time passes and our
world has more dangerous problems. We have to start thinking what we are
doing wrong. If you want to change the world you have to start for yourself.

9
Anything is possible but the thing is that we have to work in team. Thats why
these institutions are working with many people.

Develop design ideas

My team and I choose one idea that each member presented on the
Document analyzing existing product. They told me that it was difficult for
them
To find a great and functional idea because most of the ideas that are
founded on the Internet all of them were already made by other students. I didnt
like most of the ideas of my classmates because they were difficult to made and
with non
Sense.
I like one idea of Ana Paula. She presents to me a filter that eliminates
arsenic and heavy metals of drinking water. This is a very common problem
nowadays because of the factories that contaminate the water with chemicals
that can be toxic. It filtrates the dirty water of the rain and it separates the clean
water. The clean water travels to the kitchen and to the bathroom.
The second idea I like from my classmates is an innovative tool for brush
your teeth the water goes directly to your brush% and to your mouth when you
are washing them% and it also saves water. Solve the problem of using too much
water also you are using less water and using in a quickly and directly way.
Usually when we brush out teeths we waste a lot of water and it could be good
Product for earning water.

12

Present the chosen final idea

We select a product that is base
of an idea that Ana Paula chose is and
Individual water filter to eliminate
arsenic and heavy metals from
drinking water.
It
removes
dangerous
contaminations of arsenic from
water to get drinking water. The
filter can be extended with
additional components like inline
membrane filters for bacterial and
virus protection.
This product filtrates the dirty water from the rain and separates the clean water.
You obtain the water from the rain and it comes into a filter all to the kitchen to
produce clean water to wash your hands.
We select this idea but also including a different kind of process. This tubes are
going to be on the roof of the house and from that height meanwhile the water is
going down on the tubes is going to be processing the dirty water. That water
after it cleans it would go one for the kitchen and other to the plants. Is for saving
water because we are finishing the natural resources we have.

Features of my product features that makes it better

Features of comparison

The clean water goes to the

kitchen to clean plates and
other stuffs
It cleans the rain water and
also eliminates the arsenic
and heavy metal for
drinking water
You will obtain the water for
rain and it will be a tube that
will have to ways, one is for
filter the dirty water, you will
use this clean water for
whatever necessity you
need.
Recycles materials which
you can create a greater
and at the same time
helping the environment.
The home water saver is a
product that is located all
around the house and is
really safety to drink or uses
in the house.

When it rains it would be

easier for the water to fall
on the tubes that will make
the process
The water will fall faster like
a slide so the process is
going to be faster
The water will not just can
be reduced for the kitchen
It also will be for showing
the plants with trees with no
rain
It going to conduce the
water into a recipient that
will save the water that is
not going to be use on that
moment

Justify the need (team)

This bimester in the design class, we will be working on the Innovative fair. The
purpose of the innovative fair is to create a innovative product to help. You can
create a product to help the environment or your community.
The problem in my community is that not all communities has potable water in
our country there are very large differences in water availability. The central and
northern Mexico areas are, for the most part, arid or semi-arid: the northern
states, for example, only receive 25 % of rainwater.
In the case of entities in the southeast (Chiapas, Oaxaca, Campeche, Quintana
Roo, Yucatan, Veracruz and Tabasco) is the opposite, they receive almost half of
rainwater (49.6 %) and in the south, also it rains a lot, however, residents have
less access to vital liquid , since they have no basic services such as piped water
is inside the house In the Valley of Mexico is the lowest annual water availability (
only 186 m3 / hab) ; otherwise is the southern border (over 24 000 m3 / hab.) .
In many Mexican states only gets 25% of water from rain. In Case of the south
part (Chiapas, Yucatan, Oaxaca, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Veracruz and
Tabasco) is different, they gets le half of the water from rain. (49.6%) and in the
south it also rains a lot.
In Mexico you can found the lowest access monthly of water. The polluted water
you can find it in Aguas calientes, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo,
Jalisco, San Luis Potosi, Sonora, Baja California, Puebla y Zacatecas.
This is occurring because we are contaminating Mexicans water and thats the
only sources that we have, and we are making bad use of the water.
Causes:
1. Many people contaminate oceans, by throwing garbage to the rivers and to the
streets.
2. Not all people have potable water because they live far from the street.
3. In Mexico we suffer drought because the water is getting wasted.
Effects:
1.Not potable water to Mexican rural areas.

15
2. Contaminated water, about 73% of Mexican water is contaminated. We all
deserve potable water to have a healthy life without any sickness.
3. 4 million of people die because of water problems, per year.

Identify and prioritize research (team)

The idea is that the product helps the environment and the people who
surround it. You can easily purify water, and that water can be transformed again
into pure water with the help of chemistry.
There are many organizations that help to do the cleaning of the oceans, and
shearing potable water to many poor countries, In eastern Guatemala, near the
border with Honduras, is Chanmagua, an affected community economically.
There, residents live thanks to the growing and processing grain of coffee.
Unfortunately, there is an acidic byproduct of this activity; It represents the toxic
waste produced by discard the crust of coffee beans. Until recently, this wastethrown to the
Local streams-it was a source of poison and disease for animals, vegetation and
the
humans.
Thanks to the program known as Clean Water for All, and with the help of two
Wissahickon Spring Water-organizations Inc. and Global Health Ministry-this
community 350 rural homes is a healthier population, more productive and selfsufficient.
UNICEF is also an organization, which helps to the care of potable water. The
overall objective of UNICEF's water and sanitation is to promote the survival,
protection and development of children and promote the changes necessary
behavior to realize and fully the benefits that provide water services and
sanitation.
It will not be possible to meet these and other objectives
without the full participation of women. In much of the
world, women and girls are traditionally in charge of water supply,
sanitation and maintain hygienic home environment. While household
managers, are the maximum interested in improving water and sanitation
services as well as maintenance of facilities.
And finally the Denver Water says and support that , Water is a
precious resource critical to people, food, animals, plants and everything we love
about the world around us. In Colorado, this includes anything from rafting to
backyard barbecues.
You cant make water, but here are some ways you can protect the supply we
have and use only what you need.
The thriftiest Spanish city is Barcelona, which consumes 119 liters of water per
person per day, compared to 124 consumed by locals. Also during his
presentation, Rayon cited some innovations for water savings held in Catalonia.
The most important is to reuse the treated water at the plant in El Prat de
Llobregat for home use. This practice is a pioneer in Spain. The "from the toilet to

18
the tap" ("bath the tap" as this process is popularly known in the US) is especially
useful in times of drought.
To do this project we will have to resort to a scale model because in the original
project have to use a real house, but in innovation fair, we will go to use a
doghouse to simulate real house, and we will use the materials that we planned
but on a smaller scale.
Several countries are taking steps to capture and reuse rainwater resource.
Europe: The use of rainwater in Europe, mainly due to the high price of water in
many countries, the higher is the best rate depreciation. Countries where it has a
higher cost are Denmark (1.84 Euro / m) and Germany (1.73 Euro / m3).
Because of the low price of water systems for houses they are still not very
common, though government subsidies and facilities implementation, are under
way to take advantage of the technology that is being developed in Germany.
Asia: China has been facing serious water shortages that have caused huge
economic and environmental losses. The worst condition of lack of supply, is
given in Gansu Loess Plateau, located in the northwest of the country. It's area,
one of the poorest in China, depends entirely on rain water, but the rains are
becoming scarcer, annual precipitation is about 300 mm and occurs between the
months of July to September, while quantities potential evaporation are 1,5002,000 mm. Surface and ground water is limited, therefore agriculture in the
province depends on rainfall.
Between 1995-1996; Project Rainwater Catchment "121" implemented by the
government of Gansu Province to support farmers, in which he gave each family
a system to capture rainwater began.
China, Provincial de Gansu, Japan, India, Singapore, and Bangladesh are
countries that shortages water.
Australia: in the major Australian cities they are having to face a crisis due to
lack of water, the increase in population and the failure to increase reserves,
exacerbated by the effects of climate change are causing many cities are starting
to run out of supply. This situation is leading to limited use, especially as regards
watering gardens or washing cars. Which together with the awareness to do
something, it is leading to increased interest of the population by capturing
rainwater, encouraged by special prices and government subsidies.

19

In addition to water scarcity in much of the country capturing rainwater it has

become a requirement and installation of tanks to store rainwater resource is
mandatory in new construction. In some states in Australia they have made great
strides to promote legislation that will lead to efficient use of water, such as:
Victoria, South Australia, Sydney,New South Wales, Gold Coast, and Queens
land.
Africa: On the continent of the great deserts, more and more systems to capture
rainwater used even face some problems such as seasonal precipitation and
scarcer than in other parts of the world, fewer and size of the waterproof covers,
high cost and difficulty in finding materials and higher costs of construction and
implementation of systems. However, the lack of water in many areas makes this
a fundamental solution.
Kenya: This practice is carried out in Kenya since the late 1970s, they have built
thousands of catchment systems promoted by local builders called "fundis" who
are responsible for designing different strategies and resume traditional practices
to harness the rainwater.
Zimbabwe

Objective
The objective of our product home water saver is for reducing water that comes
from the rain. This product is mostly for people that live on rural places and
doesnt count with clean water or with enough water. Its an easy and cheaper
idea for these cases. The water from the rain has always been wasted. Is time to
do something because one day every water drop we have on earth will be gone.

Procedure
First step construct the wood house.
1-A hard material like wood would be best.
2-Cut two pieces of wood to be the same size. These will be the sides of your
house.
3-Measure how big in width you want the bottom of the dollhouse to be. Put the
two already cut sides aside until you've got the size you want.
4- put the major sides together. Put the bottom and top on the two sides together
by nailing one piece into the other. Do this on both sides so that you have a box
shape with no face or backing.
5-Cut your face out of the wood. Lay the box with the open face down on a piece
of plywood. Trace and cut out the resulting shape and nail it into place as well.
You can install L brackets at this point in order to make the house stronger.
6-now to create the water system you will need the PVC tubes and the
connectors
7- surround the house with the PVC tube and put the holders around the pvc
tube
8- cut the pvc tube in half and in the very end the 2 mosquito mesh, which will
separate the leaves and the insects fro the water.
9- connects the PVC tube to the garden and the other tube to the water filter.
10- to the water filter you will need
Plastic bottle with a cap
Craft knife

22
Hammer and nail (optional)
Coffee filter
Large cup or mug (optional)
Activated charcoal
Sand
Gravel
Container to catch the water (jar, cup, mug, etc.)
11- Use a craft knife to cut the bottom inch (2.54 centimeters) or so off of the
plastic bottle. Stick the knife into the side of the bottle, and start cutting it slowly.
You may find that making short; back-and-forth cuts (like sawing) may be easier.
If you are a child, ask an adult to help you with this step
Add handle so that you can hang it while it filters the water. Start by poking two
holes near the cut edge of the bottle. Make the holes opposite of each other.
Thread a piece of string through the two holes. Tie the string in a knot.
12- Use a hammer and nail to punch a hole in the cap. The hole will help slow
down the flow of water and make the filter more effective. If you don't have a
hammer or nail, use a craft knife to stab an X shape into the bottle cap.
13- Put the coffee filter over the mouth of the bottle and tightens the cap
over it. The coffee filter will keep the activated charcoal inside the bottle and
keep it from falling out. The cap will hold the coffee filter in place.
14- Put the bottle cap-side-down into a mug or cup. This will help keep the
bottle steady while you fill it. If you don't have a cup or mug, then you can place
the bottle down on a table. You will need to hold it steady with one hand.
15- Fill the bottom third of the bottle with activated charcoal. If the charcoal
comes in large pieces, you will need to break them down into smaller pieces. Do
this by putting the chunks inside a bag, and crushing them with a hard object
(such as a hammer). You don't want the chunks to be larger than a pea.
Charcoal can get very dirty. You can keep your hands clean by wearing some
gloves.
16- Fill the middle of bottle with sand. You can use any type of sand you want,
but avoid using colored craft sand. Colored sand may leak dyes into the water.
Try to make the sand layer about as thick as the charcoal layer. The bottle should
be a little more than halfway full by now.
Try using two types of sand: a fine-grained sand and a coarse grained sand. The
finer sand will go first, on top of the charcoal. The coarse grained sand will go
next, on top of the fine-grained sand. This will create more layers for the water to
pass through, and help make it cleaner.
17- Fill the rest of the bottle with a gravel. Leave an inch (2.54 centimeters) or
so of empty space between the gravel and the cut part of the bottle. Do not fill the

23
bottle all the way with gravel, or the water may spill over if it does not drain fast
enough.

Evaluate the success of the product

I would like it to make it bigger but it was difficult and we are just trying to
show the idea to the judges. I like how it seems. Honestly I expect something
worst and we did a great job. I hope judges like the idea we are trying to transmit.
If we would have more time I think the product would be better.

Explain how the product could be impressed

I would just change the size because it is too small. Everything went better
than we expect to be. The color also is not that beautiful but we are trying to
demonstrate a rural house so I think its okay like that.
