Flexural and compressive properties of hybrid kenaf/silica nanoparticles in

epoxy composite.
Farid Bajuri, Norkhairunnisa Mazlan, Mohamad Ridzwan Ishak, and
Junichiro Imatomi
2015
-natural fibers are generally weaker than synthetic fibers due to the
porosity of the fibers making them grow weaker mechanically and
physically as time passes.
Ratio: 100:28.4
Flexural properties: ASTM 790 (3-point bending flexural tests)
Specimen Dimension: 125 mm* 12.7 mm*3.2 mm
Span-to-depth ratio: 16:1
Straining Rate: 0.01mm/mm/min
Compressive propertiese: ASTM D695
Specimen size: 10mm*10mm*3.2mm
Compression rate 2mm/min
Repetition: 5 times per loading and take average.
Bila silica nanoparticles dimasukkan dlm epoxy, flexural strength
menurun.
2vol% silica nanoparticles loading, bagi the best mechanical properties:
43.8 MPa flexural strength & 3.05 GPa flexural modulus, and 40.0 MPa
compressive strength & 1.15 GPa compressive modulus.

Characteristics of kenaf fibre/epoxy composites subjected to thermal

degradation
Z. N. Azwa, B.F. Yousif
2013
Many natural fibres are inadequate for processing with thermoplastics
(processing temperature > 200 .
Vacuum oven pressure at 0.5 bar = 50000 Pa
Constant 48%vol of fibre in the matrix.
Untreated kenaf fibres have higher moisture content that treated fibres
6.38% and 3.85%, respectively.

Findings

Method:
The prepared fibres of 30 wt.%, 50 wt.% and 70 wt.% were mixed with
epoxy at a resin to hardener ratio of 4:1.
Finding:
Increasing the fibre composition of the OPF/E composite led to severe
wear. However, increasing the fibre compositions of the KF/E composite
showed better wear performance.
