Bill Viola
Bill Viola is widely recognized as one of the leading video artists on the
international scene. For over 30 years he has created videotapes, architectural
video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, and
works for television broadcast. Violas video installationstotal environments
that envelop the viewer in image and soundemploy state-of-the-art
technologies and are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. His
single channel videotapes have been broadcast and presented cinematically
around the world, while his writings have been published and anthologized for
international readers.
Five Angles of the Millennium. Each video is projected directly onto a wall in a
dark room and shows a male figure submerging in or remerging from water, at
times diving into the waters surface, and at other times hovering over it. These
actions occur in a continuous loop, which are enhanced by a soundtrack of
underwater noises, including the crashing of waves and colour changes (from
blood red to grey blue). The action of the figure seems fairly simple, in that we
are looking at the rise and fall of a figure above or below a body of water.
However, it soon becomes clear that the trajectory of the figure is not
straightforward. Viola runs the sequences in slow motion.
Technology used to install Videos
Artist have used technology to display their work in different ways, the
techniques used in this picture is very unique because as you can see the
people sat in front of the 1st television are looking into a screen which Is
displaying the man sitting in front of the second television where he is
looking into a screen displaying the people in front of the 1st television. As
you can see the artist has done this by using a camera looking at the
single person which is then displayed on the first television where they
can see the single person in the chair watching the television. Bill Violas
work has a narrative to it, because it is creating the meaning that your always
being watched. The space this artist has used creates the meaning that you
could be being watched anyway even in a closed empty room like they are in.
This artist has used a projector and mirror style to create this illusion type
of installation which also tells a story. This one again because of the space
its shown in its the only thing you can focus on giving it stronger meaning
and lets you realise theres more to it and would make you think deeper
into it as its the only thing you can focus on in the room. The audiences
response to this would be overwhelming and would give them a dream
sense of nature.
These intallations I have looked at have inspired and relate a lot to the ideas me
and my group have come up with for our istallation at a gallary. The projectors
are a huge relation to what we are doing because we are going to have a
projected video of animation and the use of shapes and technology relates to out
ideas because we are going to have ipads which will have lego around them to
give it the animation sence and the lighting used will be something we are going
to do.
