Producing a Video
Video installation
Is a contemporary art form that combines video technology with installation art, making use
of all aspects of the surrounding environment to affect the audience.

For Artweek Boston this year, I created an interactive

video installation at the W Hotel Boston. The
installation was activated as part of the kick-off
events / party on April 30th, and it was active nightly
thru May 10th

Vico Acconi

American sculptor, performance artist and video artist. He initially devoted

himself to poetry and writing but began to produce visual work in 1969, most of
which incorporates subversive social comment. The works of 1969 were
photographic records of actions such as bending and throwing. From 1970 until
1974 he staged a series of activities and performances, such as Broad Jump '71,
a jumping competition for men, with a woman as the prize: the work was
designed to expose the
conventions of male
ownership of women this is
the narrative of this
installation work. The space
the space this has been
shown in displays the
meaning of this installation
differently because its
projected onto a wall and is
large so when viewing it in an
empty room like this its the
only thing to focus on so it
has stronger meaning.

This instalment is called Pornography in the Classroom it is installed using a

projector and a prop which looks like a big camera to show the way pornography
is filmed. It is presented this way to give the effect that Pornography is being
filmed in the Gallery. He is famous for his video instalments and has been known
to present some very strange pieces. Here is an example of one of his other
pieces This would give the viewer a sense of privacy because of the empty
corner of the room and the response to this would be that its the only thing to
focus on especially the television on the floor so it would really grab the viewers
attension.

Bill Viola

Bill Viola is widely recognized as one of the leading video artists on the
international scene. For over 30 years he has created videotapes, architectural
video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, and
works for television broadcast. Violas video installationstotal environments
that envelop the viewer in image and soundemploy state-of-the-art
technologies and are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. His
single channel videotapes have been broadcast and presented cinematically
around the world, while his writings have been published and anthologized for
international readers.

Five Angles of the Millennium. Each video is projected directly onto a wall in a
dark room and shows a male figure submerging in or remerging from water, at
times diving into the waters surface, and at other times hovering over it. These
actions occur in a continuous loop, which are enhanced by a soundtrack of
underwater noises, including the crashing of waves and colour changes (from
blood red to grey blue). The action of the figure seems fairly simple, in that we
are looking at the rise and fall of a figure above or below a body of water.
However, it soon becomes clear that the trajectory of the figure is not
straightforward. Viola runs the sequences in slow motion.
Technology used to install Videos

Projector and Screen

Phones
Flat Screens
iPads
Speakers and Headphones
Motion sensors to track the movement of an Audience

Artist have used technology to display their work in different ways, the
techniques used in this picture is very unique because as you can see the
people sat in front of the 1st television are looking into a screen which Is
displaying the man sitting in front of the second television where he is
looking into a screen displaying the people in front of the 1st television. As
you can see the artist has done this by using a camera looking at the
single person which is then displayed on the first television where they
can see the single person in the chair watching the television. Bill Violas
work has a narrative to it, because it is creating the meaning that your always

being watched. The space this artist has used creates the meaning that you
could be being watched anyway even in a closed empty room like they are in.

This artist has used a projector and mirror style to create this illusion type
of installation which also tells a story. This one again because of the space
its shown in its the only thing you can focus on giving it stronger meaning
and lets you realise theres more to it and would make you think deeper
into it as its the only thing you can focus on in the room. The audiences
response to this would be overwhelming and would give them a dream
sense of nature.

Narrative in media in terms of telling a story is the way different elements

in the story or in terms of this in the picture, are organised to have a
meaning. Installations are stand-alone pieces while others are from part of
a mixed art show, some screened in site-specific spaces. Each of these
variables present affects the experience of the viewer and this is what
narrative in video installation is to do. Its important when coming to
installation narrative because the viewer often determines the

construction of the installation. Compared to a non-narrative type which is

a story without a narrative and meaning its just there to show something
without a meaning behind it, its their kind of just for the show of it.
Kello Goeller is an American visual artist which includes video installation
video art, animation and video production and the style this artist uses is
the nature of shapes. As you
can see the style and where she
is showing it gives an effect to
the viewer. Thisd would be nonnarrative because there is so
meaning behind it.

These intallations I have looked at have inspired and relate a lot to the ideas me
and my group have come up with for our istallation at a gallary. The projectors
are a huge relation to what we are doing because we are going to have a
projected video of animation and the use of shapes and technology relates to out
ideas because we are going to have ipads which will have lego around them to
give it the animation sence and the lighting used will be something we are going
to do.
