LESSON PLAN

The following is a sample of the Lesson Plan format used by the University.
Lesson Topic/Focus:

ICT Researching animals

Date:

19/6/14

AusVELS Domain(s):

Information and Communications

Technology

Year level(s):

1/2

AusVELS strand (s):

Laying the Foundations

Lesson duration:

30 minutes

AusVELS sub-strand(s):
AusVELS Dimension(s) or
Religious Education
Guideline:
Students become familiar with the main components of a computer and develop their hand-eye
coordination by using a mouse to control the cursor/pointer on the screen. Students enter and
manipulate data to create simple information products (AUSVELS).
Learning Standard(s)/Outcome(s):
- Students are learning how to find information under each of the headings for their information report on
the Internet.
Assessment:
(2 or 3)
- Students are able to find 4 pieces of new and relevant information to put in their report from the
internet.
- Students are able to write the information under the correct sub heading
Teaching focus:
B.
(Your personal choice of skill development)
Explanation: make sure I am explaining the activity clearly the so children get a clear understanding of
what is required from them.
Background to the learning:
A.
Teacher (Teacher resources to inform your content knowledge)
B.
Student (Identify Students background and current knowledge of topic)
- This will be the third lesson that the students have had on information reports so they will be aware of
the information they have to look for.
- They have been exposed to information reports about animals
- They know the structure of an information report and understand the information that would go under
each heading.
- students have already began researching their animals
Lesson resources:
- laptops
- workbooks
Lesson content:
A.
Introduction
5 mins
- What are some of the things we have learnt about information reports?
- Why do we have sub headings?
- We have already begun searching for information for our information reports where else could we
get information?

- If we are using Google how can we make sure that we are going to get the information we are
looking for?
B.

Development
10 mins
We are going to find more information on our animals because I think you are all clever
enough to put more information then what you already have.
- How can we find information on the internet about what our animal eats?
Get the laptops out and ask the students to get into their groups with the other students doing their
information report on the same animal:
Ask the students to write in the search bar what (animal) eats for children
- When we are looking for information is it necessary to read everything on the website? Maybe
we could look for key words?
- What key words could we look for?
-

C.
-

Consolidation, practice, extension

40 mins
Ask the students in their groups to try and add a few more facts to each subheading of the
information report
Ask them to start with the specific subheadings and then more on to the general statement
and interesting facts of the information report.
Early Finishers- Extension Activities
Keep looking for interesting information about their animal and perhaps find a new
subheading that could be added to the information report.

D.
Closure
5 mins
Have a few students share the new facts they have added to their information report about their
animal and allow the class to give them feedback and ask 1 question.
Post-lesson review and evaluation:
Student achievement:
The students really enjoyed this lesson as they love being on the laptops and looking up facts about
the animals they are interested in. They were able to add a few facts to their information report
however not all students were successful in finding 4. This was because some of them are still new to
the laptops and some did not look for subheadings meaning they were reading the all the information
on the page, which took a while. Most students were successful in placing the information under the
correct subheadings as this has been our focus and we have looked at it deeply over the past week.
Teaching effectiveness:
I think the lesson went well and I was able to clearly explain the activity to the students and what was
expected of them. Although some of the students did not get as many facts as I had hoped, I think
researching on the internet was useful to them as they were not only able to read about their animal,
but also has experience on the laptops and were able to develop their ICT skills. The students were
engaged and behaved appropriately so I did not need to implement any behaviour management
techniques
